Pete Gill Sr.
Pete Gill Sr., 86, of Holly Springs, died Oct. 1, 2012, at Trinity Mission Health & Rehab in Holly Springs. He was a member of Powell Chapel Masonic Lodge and a retired sanitation worker with the city of Holly Springs.
Services were held at 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 6 at Free Branch MB Church, where he was a member. Burial was in Cottrell Memorial Garden. Rev. Lee Gill officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
He leaves two sons, Pete Gill Jr. of Holly Springs, Clyde Gill of Oxford; three daughters, Rosie Mae Faulkner, Emma Mae Jones, Faye Joyce Spearman, all of Holly Springs; 17 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Shelia Elaine Malone Richards
Shelia Elaine Malone Richards, 55, of Houston, Tx., formerly of Holly Springs, died Sept. 29, 2012, at her home. She was a member of New Light Church in Houston, a 1979 graduate of Mississippi University for Women, member of the board of directors Texas Headstart Association, part-time reservationist for United Airlines and program director for Headstart and Early Headstart in Houston.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Oct. 6 at New Hope MB Church in Laws Hill. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Dr. Bessie Tables will officiate. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements.
She leaves her husband, Gerald Richards; her mother, Amanda Ella Malone of Holly Springs; a sister, Cheryl Washington of Memphis, Tenn.; and four brothers, Malcolm Malone of Holly Springs, Kenneth Malone, Kelsey Malone, both of Memphis, Travis Malone of Jackson.
She was preceded in death by brothers Lawrence Malone and James Roland Malone.
Charles Anderson Roberson
Charles “Charlie” Anderson Roberson died Sept. 26, 2012 at his home. Brantley Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
He leaves his wife, Debbie Roberson; two daughters, Kim Roberson Motes (Billy), Keri Roberson Nuss (Steven); three sons, Jonathan Thweatt (Jamye), Jesse Thweatt, Josh Thweatt (Blair); a sister, Virginia Harden; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Larry Eugene Roberson.
Rev. Roy L. Thurman III
Rev. Roy L. Thurman III, 67, died Sept. 15, 2012. After graduation from Dunbar High School in Chicago, Ill., he entered the United States Air Force. He worked on several jobs including the steel mills in Chicago. Many years later, due to a job transfer with South Central Bell, he relocated to Biloxi. He earned a master’s of theology degree from Slidell Baptist Seminary in Slidell, La. He served as an associate minister of the Main Street Baptist Church and was committed to the prison ministry, missionary of the Shiloh Missionary Baptist District Association and was active in South MS State Convention.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on Sept. 24 at Main Street Baptist Church in Biloxi. Dr. Kenneth Haynes Sr., pastor, officiated. Burial was in Biloxi National Cemetery. Dickey Brothers Memorial Funeral Home in Biloxi was in charge of arrangements.
He leaves his wife of 25 years, Shirley Thurman; his mother, Julia Walton of Memphis; five daughters and three sons, Katrina (James) Lewis of Minneapolis, Minn., Phillip (Joann) Thurman of Chicago, Ill., Monique Keeton of Atlanta, Ga., Roy (Cynthia) Thurman IV of Los Angeles, Calif., Timothy (Vicki) Lewis of Savannah, Ga., Felicia Lewis of Houston, Tx., Sherry (Carl) Deese of Killeen, Tx., Tina (Tony) Fair of Pearl; six sisters and two brothers, Lovell (Trey) Cartwright of Los Angeles, Calif., Ralph (Rolena) Thurman of Atlanta, Ga., Robert Thurman of Las Vegas, Nev., Monica (Jerome) Odum, Linda Collier, Diane Shannon, Rhonda Ridley, Rene Campbell, all of Chicago; 24 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Jerome Thurman; a sister, Delores Parks.
Pallbearers were Kobie Sweeten, Phillip Jackson, Petie Thurman, Fred Toliver, Albert Wells, Karl Washington and Chris Magee. Honorary pallbearers were David Thomas, Otis Ducksworth, Cardell Lewis, Marcus Deese, Darrel Thomas, Roy Thurman IV and Douglas White Jr.
Charles Franklin Walton
Charles Franklin “Chuck” Walton, 45, died Sept. 22, 2012, at Baptist DeSoto Hospital in Southaven. He was a member of St. Paul CME Church in Holly Springs, where he served as a steward, trustee and male chorus choir member. He was a 1986 graduate of Holly Springs High School and later attended Auto Diesel School in Nashville, Tenn. He was employed with Burlington Northern Sante-Fe Railroad, Hulcher Service and later Old Dominion Truck Lines.
Services were held at 12 noon on Sept. 29 at St. Paul CME Church in Holly Springs. Pastor Charles E. Dooley officiated. Rev. Tony Wilkins was eulogist. Burial was in Cottrell Memorial Garden in Holly Springs. Serenity Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
He leaves his children, Jamar of Oxford, Tametria and Darneshia of Holly Springs; his mother, Effie Walton-Johnson; his father, Frank Walton of Lamar; his brother, Noah; and sisters, Deborah, Karen and Kathy.
He was preceded in death by siblings Cynthia Walton, Mamie Parkins and Joseph Johnson.
Pallbearers were Auther Walton, Warren Johnson, D’Vonte Stinson, Steven Norris, Jeremy Snow, Marquis Johnson, Corey Spight and Gerald Evans. Honorary pallbearers were Fredrick Jenkins, Elvis Campbell, Sandy Jenkins, Chester Campbell, Donald Jenkins, Rodney Lowe, Larry Hubbard and Clinton Hubbard.
Sheila Dugard
Sheila Dugard, 52, of Hernando, died Dec. 15, 2012, at Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo.
Services will be held at a later date. Holly Springs Funeral Home is in charge of services.
She leaves three daughters, Karen Dugard, Katherine Gary, both of Memphis, Tenn., Sharon Wright of Hickory Flat; two brothers, Thomas Dugard, Keith Dugard, both of Kansas; and six grandchildren.
Derrell Elmore Lea Jr.
Derrell Elmore (D.J.) Lea Jr., 31, of Potts Camp, died Dec. 17, 2012, at NE MS Medical Center. He was a heavy equipment operator with Holly Springs Utility Department.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on Dec. 20 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Coldwater Baptist Cemetery in Barton.
He leaves his wife, Danielle Lea of Potts Camp; his father, Derrell Lea Sr. (Tracy) of Collierville, Tenn.; his mother, Kerry Taylor, Donna Chipman of St. Petersburg, Fla.; a son, Ryan Bentley Lea of Potts Camp; two brothers, Brandon Lea, Josh Lea, both of Collierville; a sister, Tara Lea of Collierville; grandparents William Adair (Jackie) of Senatobia, Joyce Yarbrough (Don) of North Carolina; Barbara Humphreys (George) of Holly Springs.
Melba Sue Jones Owen
Melba Sue Jones Owen, 68, of the Mt. Pleasant community near Collierville, died Dec. 16, 2012 at her home. She was a medical technologist at the Memphis Veterans Medical Center for 20 years before her retirement 12 years ago. She was a member of the Memphis Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Services were held at 1 p.m. on Dec. 19 at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, where she was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pastor Rev. Ray Branch officiated. Piperton Funeral Office of Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center was in charge of arrangements.
She leaves her husband of 52 years, Walter George Owen Sr.; her daughter, Cecelia Owen Hester (Curtis) of Mt. Pleasant; her son, Walter Owen Jr. (Tina) of Mt. Pleasant; her sister, Jean Elaine Dunn of Mt. Pleasant; her brother, Roy Herman Jones Jr. of Pulaski, Tenn.; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Bruce Sebring, Matt Thompson, Cody Teel, Don Whitley, Ken Ranks and Mike Lewis. Honorary pallbearers were Walter Owen III and Reid Patterson.
