Robert Ross Simpson
Robert Ross Simpson, 85, of Byhalia, died Jan. 28, 2011, at his home. After graduating from Byhalia High School, he joined the Navy. He received the rank of pharmacist’s mate third class during World War II. During the Korean War, he served in the Air Force Reserves at the Millington base for two years. He worked in the Byhalia Post Office as clerk for 43 years. He was director of lay speaking in the Sardis District for several years as well as a lay speaker. He was a member of the Masons and served as Master of Masons. He was a charter member of the Lions Club and also a member of the Byhalia Chamber of Commerce.
Services were held at 2 p.m. on Jan. 30 at Byhalia Methodist Church, where he was a member. Burial was in Byhalia Cemetery. Brantley Funeral Home of Olive Branch was in charge of arrangements.
He leaves his wife of 56 years, Dilma; two sons, Robert “Bert” Ross II (Yvonne) of Holly Springs, Bradley Carlton (Laurin) of Olive Branch; a daughter, Karen Kay Simpson of Cordova, Tenn.; and five grandsons.
He was preceded in death by four siblings and two daughters; brothers Laurens and Russell Simpson; sisters, Katie Mae Tucker, Elzine Gee; a daughter, Deborah Ellen; and infant daughter, Sandra Fay.

Jacqueline Anne Smith
Jacqueline Anne (Reeh) Smith, 68, of Memphis, Tenn., died January 30, 2011, at St. Francis Hospital in Memphis. She was a licensed real estate agent in both Mississippi and Texas and had recently retired from the Hampton Inn Corporation where she served as director of marketing for many years. She was an alumna of the University of Mississippi, member of the Collierville Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Grand Krewe of Ennead in Memphis.
Visitation will be held at the Kate Freeman Clark Art Gallery in Holly Springs on February 4 from 5 - 7 p.m. and immediately followed by a memorial service and celebration of her life. Funeral and burial will be at St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church and Holy Cross Cemetery in her hometown of Blair, Neb. at a later date.
She leaves two sons, Kent E. Smith (Amanda) of Holly Springs and Stephen Smith (Sheila) of Brookhaven and two grandsons, Jack Whaley Smith and Brennan Smith, both of Holly Springs.

Katie Lee Hudson Smith
Katie Lee Hudson Smith, 87, of Ashland, died Jan. 21, 2011, at Magnolia Hospital in Corinth. She was the widow of Payton Smith. She was a member of Macedonia CME Church in Ashland.
Services were held at 2 p.m. on Jan. 29, at Palestine MB Church in Ashland. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. James Williams officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
She leaves two children, Mildred Hardin of Memphis, Payton Smith Jr. of Ashland; five sisters, Lillie Williams of Michigan City, Hattie Strickland, Lucy Mae Smith, both of Ashland, Mattie Patterson of Michigan City, Magnolia Allen of Lamar; three brothers, Eddie Hudson of Memphis, Clarence Hudson, Walter Hudson, both of Lamar; six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Robert H. Smith III
Robert H. “Big Guy” Smith III, 52, of Holly Springs, formerly of Chicago, died Jan. 23, 2011, at Alliance HealthCare System. He was employed by Aerial Trucking for the last 23 years.
Services were held at 1 p.m. on Jan. 29 at Serenity Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. L.G. Bogard officiated. Burial was in Hill Crest Cemetery.
He leaves a daughter, Dewania (Frank) Hankins of Three Rivers, Mich.; four sons, Robert Smith of Memphis, Tenn., Chad (Catasha) Ingram, Romone Smith, Rolan Smith, all of Holly Springs; four sisters, Rosalind (Sandy) Leach of Fontana, Calif., Rhonda (Ronnie) Davis of Carol Stream, Ill., Rosanna Smith, Jacqueline (Kevin) Smith, both of Fontana; and seven grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Jarvis Duncan, Stanley Jeffries, Danny Hankins, Derrick Boxely, William Jeffries and Frank Hankins. Honorary pallbearers were Billy Perkins, James Bridges, Den Willie Bridges, Clarence Bridges, John Smith and Will Smith.
Connie Mae Allen
Connie Mae Allen, 93, of Slayden, died April 5, 2011, at Alliance HealthCare. She was a member of Slayden Baptist Church and a “Rosie Riveter” during World War II.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on April 7 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Slayden Cemetery.
She leaves her husband of 69 years, Earl W. Allen; a daughter, Renee Tice (David) of Slayden; two grandchildren, Samantha Morris of Holly Springs, Bubba Tice (Rhonda) of Michigan City and four great-grandchildren, Wood Morris, Samuel Morris, Hunter Tice and Austin Tice.
Pallbearers were Greg Allen, Alan Stacks, Alfred Wilson, Ricky Watkins, Mark Watkins and Billy Brewer.
Howard Reid Carpenter Sr.
Howard Reid Carpenter Sr., 86, of Slayden, died April 17, 2011, at Baptist Collierville Hospital in Collierville, Tenn. He was the widower of Hazel Valentine Carpenter and a farmer.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on April 19 at Slayden Baptist Church, where he was a member. Burial was in Slayden Cemetery. Bro. Armond Taylor officiated. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
He leaves three sons, James R. Carpenter, George W. Carpenter, Howard R. Carpenter Jr., all of Slayden; two daughters, Michelle Allen, Vicki Rodgers, both of Slayden; a sister, Brooksie Brewer of Arlington, Tx.; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Charles Byrne Carpenter, Thomas Shane Carpenter, Gregory Darryl Allen Jr., George Thomas Rodgers Jr., Nicholes Bret Carpenter, Clay Barkley Carpenter, Jeromy George Carpenter, Michael Dustin Allen, Marcus Reid Carpenter and Chase Crawford Carpenter. Honorary pallbearers were Jamie Lynn Shaw and Traci Michelle Rodgers.
Marcus Jecorey Hardin
Marcus Jecorey “Black” Hardin, 32, died April 9, 2011.
Services were held at 1 p.m. on April 16 at New Mt. Gilliam MB Church in Byhalia. Burial was in Chulahoma Cemetery in Holly Springs. Gillespie Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
He leaves his wife, Armetrice Hardin; ; two daughters, Skylar B. Hardin of Byhalia, Taquarranna L. Holloway of Holly Springs; three sons, Tyler M. Hardin, Cameron D. Hardin of Byhalia, Montavies Hardaway of Olive Branch; his mother, Gazetta Hardin Tuggles of Holly Springs; his father, Louis Tuggles of Jonesboro, Ark.; grandparents, Arlena Liggins, Henry Tuggles, both of Holly Springs; three brothers, Brandon D. Hardin of Holly Springs, Xavier Tuggles, Deonte Tuggles of Aurora, Ill.; and his father- and mother-in-law, Jessie and Carol Webster of Byhalia.
Lillian Smith Nunnally
Lillian Smith Nunnally, 93, of Holly Springs, died April 5, 2011, at Alliance HealthCare System. She was the widow of Virgil Nunnally.
Services were held at 1 p.m. on April 14 at Hernando Road Church of Christ, where she was a member. Burial was in Cottrell Memorial Garden. Bro. Willie James Hampton officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
She leaves two daughters, Elizabeth Graves of Holly Springs, Arietta Williams of Olympia Fields, Ill.; four sons, Eddie H. Nunnally of St. Louis, Mo., L.V. Nunnally of Memphis, Tenn., Ulysses Z. Nunnally of Holly Springs, Willie Nunnally of Chicago, Ill.; a sister, Bertha Love of Memphis, Tenn.; 18 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Lula Nunnally; and a sister, Henrietta Griffin.
