William Ray Perkins
William Ray Perkins, 65, of Byhalia, died Oct. 19, 2014. He was the widower of Mary G. Perkins. He was a retired mechanic with FedEx.
A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. on Oct. 23 at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens in Bartlett, Tenn.
He leaves two sons, John William Perkins, Richard Daniel Perkins; two sisters, Betty Watkins, Becky Austin; two brothers, Don Perkins, Tracey Foote; and four grandchildren.
Kathryn Christine Shaw
Kathryn Christine Shaw, 88, of Ashland, died Oct. 21, 2014, at her home. She was the widow of G.I. Shaw. and a member of the Church of Christ.
Services were held at 2 p.m. on Oct. 24 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Hill Crest Cemetery.
She leaves three sons, Freddy Shaw of Ashland, Jerry Shaw of Potts Camp, Randy Shaw of Blue Mountain; five daughters, Carol Holmes, Betty Ann Peek, Sharon Holtzlander, all of Ashland, Nell Bradshaw of Slayden, Connie Berryman of Byhalia; her brother, James McLeroy of Hickory Flat; her sister, Mary Pierce of Memphis, Tenn.; 24 grandchildren, 54 great-grandchildren, and 14 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by sons George Richard Shaw, and Frankie Dale Shaw.
Owen Franklin Turner Jr.
Owen Franklin Turner Jr., 75, of Byhalia, died Oct. 23, 2014, in Oxford. He was the widower of Bonnie Nash Turner. He was employed in sales in retail clothing and a veteran.
Services were held at 12 noon on Oct. 27 at Meadow Brook Baptist Church, where he was a member. Burial was in Byhalia Cemetery. Bro. Oscar Geesling officiated. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
He leaves his son, Robert Shannon Turner of Holly Springs; his daughter, Melissa Brandon (Chris) of Byhalia; his brother, John Turner (Teresa) of Byhalia; his sister, Nancy Gaia (Gene) of Germantown, Tenn.; and six grandchildren.
Ethel Bryant Russell
Ethel Bryant Russell, 94, of Moscow, Tenn., died Sept. 14, 2010. She was a member of Slayden Baptist Church.
Services were held at 2 p.m. on Sept. 18 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Slayden Cemetery. Dr. David Spencer and Casey Russell officiated.
She leaves her husband, Charlie W. Russell; two sons, Earnest Russell, Bryant Russell, both of Moscow; her daughter, Connie Spencer of Milton, Fla.; her sister, Lucille Davis of Tioga, La.; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her son, Charles Russell.
Sherman Walls Jr.
Sherman Walls, Jr., 83, of Ashland, died Sept. 19, 2010 at his home. A U.S. Navy veteran, he was a church deacon and a retired truck driver for the Benton County Co-op.
Visitation will be held at J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home chapel Sept. 24, 2-6 p.m. and on Sept. 25 from 1:30-2:25 p.m. at the church.
Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Sept. 25 at Greenwood MB Church in Lamar, where he was a member. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Rev. Gerald Thompson will officiate.
He leaves his wife, Mary Walker Walls; six daughters, Rosie Payne, Diane Sherrill, Mildred Daugherty, Bertha Williams, all of Ashland, Callie Walls of Smithville, Va., Shirley Terry of Chicago, Ill.; five sons, Charlie Walls, Willie Walls, Richard Walls, all of Ashland; Mack Walls Sr. of Olive Branch, Rickey Walls of Fayetteville, Ark.; a sister, Mary A. Smith of Chicago; two brothers, Lee Walls of Pell City, Ala., Burnell Walls of Chicago; three godchildren, James Jackson, Eva Jackson, Lora Brown; 69 grandchildren and 59 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three children, Dallas Walls, Boretha Walls, Laura D. Walls; and five siblings, Naomi Boga, Girdell Coleman, Mildred Fullilove, Melvin Walls and Woodson Walls.
Elcue Nathaniel Curry
Elcue Nathaniel Curry, 85, of Waterford, died July 7, 2011, at his home. He was a member of Greenfield Presbyterian Church, a church elder for more than 40 years, a member of Masonic Lodge/Waterford #450, a member of the community choir, male chorus, a male quartet singer and a retired brick mason, since 2001, from James Walton Construction Company.
Services were held at 1 p.m. on July 12 at Rust College Doxey Auditorium. Burial was in Cottrell Memorial Garden. Rev. Dr. Terrlyn Lisa Avery officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
He leaves his wife, Elmira Miller Curry; six daughters, Lavora C. Blake, Evelyn Elliott, both of Waterford, Devarieste Curry of Washington, D.C., Loretta Curry, Regina Curry, both of Bowie, Md., Terrlyn Lisa Avery of Grisword, Conn.; three sons, Robert Curry of Holly Springs, Alvin Curry of Lawrenceville, Ga., Ephraim Nathaniel Curry of Conyers, Ga.; three adopted children, Magdalene Hughes of Batavia, Ill., Vannettar Moore of Aurora, Ill., Geraldine Trotter of Chicago, Ill.; 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Vanessa Aretha Curry.
Danny O’Neil Darness Sr.
Danny O’Neal Darness Sr., 62, of Holly Springs, died July 5, 2011, at his home. He was a member of Liberty MB Church of Olive Branch, a heating and air repair person and a veteran.
Services were held at 2 p.m. on July 8 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Bro. Billy Adair officiated.
He leaves his wife, Rebecca Sue Darnell; a son, Danny O’Neil Darnell Jr. (Laura) of Potts Camp; three daughters, Dana Watkins (Richard Dyer), Melissa Darnell (Paul Anderson), both of Red Banks, Nicole Siler (Ronnie) of Holly Springs; a brother, Bill Darnell of Buffalo, NY; two sisters, Teresa Bobbitt of Mt. Pleasant, Vanessa Shepherd of Eads, Tenn.; 19 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Ernest James Jones
Pastor Ernest James Jones, 80, of Memphis, Tenn., died July 6, 2011. He was the pastor of the New Hope Baptist Church in Laws Hill. He was president of the MS New Education State Congress, president of the Holly Springs Marshall County Congress and a retired Memphis City Schools teacher. He served in Korea as an interpreter and was an alumnus of Hamilton High School, Rust College, and the Herbert Brewer Theological Clinic.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on July 12 at Cane Creek Baptist Church. Burial was in West Tennessee Veterans Cemetery. Harrison’s Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
He leaves his wife, Jennie Jones; six children, son James (Connie) Jones, daughter Janet (Ryland) Acey, Verna Dale Lucas, Maurice (Belinda) Jones of Houston, Tx., Daryl Jones, Karen (LaMarcus) Johnson; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
