T.Y. Kimmons
T.Y. Kimmons, 90, died Feb. 26, 2012. He served in the United States Army in Germany and fought in World War II. He attended Mississippi Industrial College. He was the widower of Dorothy Cook Kimmons. He was a truck driver for Merchants Truck Lines for more than 30 years; even after retirement, he was called to do short runs. He was commander in charge of Am. Vet Post 0355, a member of the American Legion Post 72 and a lifelong Mason.
Services were held at 12 noon on March 3 at Watson Grove MB Church in New Albany, where he was a member and usher. Rev. Avence Pittman, pastor, officiated. Burial was in Watson Grove Cemetery in New Albany. Serenity Funeral Home of New Albany was in charge of arrangements.
He leaves his son, Rev. Thomas Kimmons (Lolean); brothers Harvester Kimmons of Racine, Wisc., Claude Kimmons of Montgomery, Ala., Harry Kimmons of Holly Springs; sisters Mable Kimmons of New Albany, Maxine Crem, Eloise Richards of Aurora, Ill.; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Pallbearers were Pete Bailey, Rodney Spears, Danny Elzie, Kelly Washington, Bill Jones and Earl McClellan.
Martha McGill Mitchell
Martha McGill Mitchell, 71, of Holly Springs, died March 4, 2012, at Alliance HealthCare Hospital in Holly Springs. She was born March 13, 1940, in Lauderdale County, Ala. A 1957 graduate of LCHS in Rogersville, she attended Freed-Hardeman College at Henderson, Tenn.; Harding University at Searcy, Ark.; and the University of Mississippi, graduating with highest honors from each institution. She did further study at Mississippi State University and Arkansas State University. She began her teaching duties in Deering, Mo., going next to Caruthersville, Mo.; Holly High in Holly Springs, Marshall Academy and finishing her career with 21 years as a counselor and administrator with Northwest Community College. She was a member of the Holly Springs Church of Christ, Edward Cary Walthall Chapter UDC and numerous academic honor societies and professional associations, serving as an officer in many of the organizations.
Services were held at 1 p.m. on March 7 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Hill Crest Cemetery. Bernard Konig of Lexington, Ala., officiated.
She leaves her husband, Bobby Mitchell; a daughter, Tonya Mitchell Ragland (Joel) of Clarksville, Tenn.; and two grandchildren, Nicholas Ragland and Natalie Ragland of Clarksville.
Pallbearers were Dale May, Cliff Valentine, Mitchell Tomlinson, Percy Carter Dorris, Robert White, Chelius Carter, Aubrey Wilson and Nicholas Ragland. Honorary pallbearer was Joel Ragland.
Memorials may be made to the Marshall County Genealogy Society; Marshall County Library, 109 E. Gholson, Holly Springs; The Friends of the Library, or to an organization of the donor’s choice.
Donald Lee Moore
Donald Lee Moore, 62, of Byhalia, died Feb. 29, 2012, at his home. He was the widow of Deborah Beaty Moore, a Pentecost, a welder and an Army veteran of Vietnam.
Services were held at 2 p.m. on March 3 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Blocker Cemetery in Olive Branch. Bro. Buddy Moore officiated.
He leaves two sisters, Ruby Cotham of Southaven, Sandra Tilley of Byhalia; a brother, Rev. Buddy Moore of Horn Lake.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Edward Moore.
Donnie Mae Pottenger
Donnie Mae Pottenger, 70, died Feb. 25, 2012. A native of Potts Camp, she worked at F.W. Woolworths in Memphis, Tenn., her Christmas Store and her husband’s Jim’s Jungle Garden Center. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
A memorial service was held on March 5 at the LDS Chapel in Apache Junction, Az. Burial was in Mountain View Memorial Garden in Mesa, Az.
She leaves her husband of 53 years, Jimmie R. Pottenger; children Douglas Edward Pottenger (Shelly), Steven Troy Pottenger (Kelly), Rebecca Ann Gray (Gary), Melissa Lynn Bucholz (Ben); two half-brothers, Jim Weaver of Alabama, Mike Weaver of Tennessee; three stepbrothers, Hoyt Johnson, Lake Johnson, Fred Johnson, all of Mississippi; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Mable H. Sharp
Mable H. Sharp, 86, of Lamar, died Feb. 28, 2012, at her home. She was the widow of Robert Sharp. She was retired from Wurlitzer.
Services were held at 2 p.m. on March 1 at Rice Chapel Methodist Church, where she was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Bro. Walter Myers officiated. Ripley Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
She leaves three daughters, Betty Gardner of Lamar, Marilyn Hammons of Bolivar, Tenn., Carolyn Carpenter (George) of Lamar; a sister, Susie Brown; three brothers, Odell Hunsucker, Roger Dale Hunsucker, James Wade Hunsucker; eight grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by five sisters, Neva Mae Leake, Helen Gray, Margie Hunsucker, Billie Ester Wright and Molly Cothern; and one brother, George Hunsucker.
Pallbearers were Vivian Ramage, Tim Ramage Sr., Tim Ramage Jr., Wayne Allen, Henry Wright and Derrick Hunsucker. Honorary pallbearers were George Carpenter and Larry Breedlove.
Katherine Turner Yarbrough
Katherine Turner Yarbrough, 89, of Red Banks, died Feb. 29, 2012, at Trinity Great Oaks Rehabilitation Center in Byhalia. She was the widow of Garland Hamlet Yarbrough Jr. She was a member of Red Banks Methodist Church, a retired registered nurse and a community volunteer.
Services were held at 10 a.m. on March 3 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Red Banks Cemetery. Rev. Anita Lawson officiated.
She leaves four daughters, Garland Minton of Hardy, Ark., Paula Noble, Carolyn Neergaard (Johnny), both of Olive Branch, Lean Follett (George) of Meridian; a sister, Jo Turner Wright of Tupelo; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Margaret Turner Rutledge and Ann Turner; and a brother, Haiden Turner.
Ruby Lee Burks
Ruby Lee Burks, 61, of Hickory Flat, died March 21, 2008.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on March 24 at Pine Grove Baptist Church, where she was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Bro. Michael Baker officiated. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
She leaves her husband, Sidney Burks; four sons, William Jeffery Wright of Jackson, Tenn., Eric Jerome Wright of Hickory Flat, Mark Jason Wright of Lexington, Tenn., Lowell Scott Russell of Ashland; a daughter, Stacy Russell Teel of Ashland; a brother, J.T. Prescott of N.C.; two sisters, Frances Abrahms of Washington, D.C., Shirley Kwasnik of Memphis, Tenn.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Alissa Nicole Wright.
Pallbearers were Ricky Kwasnik, Blake Wright, Travis Robertson, Chris McMullen, Scott Hopkins and Jimmy Fortner.
John Minton Callaham
John Minton (Jack) Callaham, 69, died March 17, 2008 at his home in Atlanta. A native of Lynchburg, Va., Jack graduated from Holy Cross High School and from the General Motors Institute in Flint, Mich. He moved to Atlanta in 1956 and worked at General Motors for 32 years before retiring in 1988.
A funeral mass was held at 11 a.m. on March 19 at All Saints Catholic Church in Dunwoody, Ga.
He leaves his wife, Jane Ellen Collins Callaham; three children, John M. Callaham Jr., Margaret Elizabeth (Jill) Callaham, James Stephen Callaham; two brothers, Frank H. Callaham Jr., Thomas M. Callaham; a sister, Helen Callaham Hutter; and five grandchildren.
