Mirakul Grace Garner
Mirakul Grace Garner, 2 weeks old, died July 28, 2014, at LeBonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.
Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. on Aug. 2 at Cottrell Memorial Cemetery in Holly Springs.
She leaves her mother and father, Imiyah Pass and Kenneth Garner Jr. of Holly Springs; grandparents Faith Bass and Warren Wagner and Jonathan Bass, Anita Jefferies and Kenneth Garner Sr.; and great-grandparents Elder Albert and Johnnie Pass.
Serenity-Autry Funeral Home of Holly Springs was in charge of arrangements.
Lillian Newsom
Lillian Newsom, 81, of Byhalia, died July 24, 2014, at Baptist East Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. She was a seamstress.
Services were held at 12 noon on Aug. 2 at Mt. Olive MB Church in Byhalia.
She leaves two daughters, Mary Newsom of Byhalia, Patricia Newsom of Holly Springs; six sons, Whitlen Newsom of Coldwater, Roosevelt Newsom, Richard Newsom, Calvin Newsom, all of Byhalia, Leeaster Newsom of Memphis, Tenn., Leon Newsom of Elkville, Ill.; four sisters, Ruby Newsom of Coldwater, Diane Wilson, Ether Lee Jones, both of Byhalia, Flora Moore of Chicago, Ill.; 18 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Rodgers Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Martha Ann Oglesby
Martha Ann Oglesby, 69, of Waterford, died July 30, 2014, in Waterford. She was a member of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church.
Services were held 2 p.m. on Aug. 3 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Mt. Moriah Cemetery.
She leaves her husband, Norman Oglesby; her daughter, Janet Ash (Jarrett) of Waterford; two sisters, Mary Mitchell (twin) of McKinney, Texas, Betty Huey of Waterford; and three grandchildren.
James Lee Raimey
James Lee Raimey, 63, of Ashtabula, Ohio, fomerly of Lamar, died July 25, 2014, at Cleveland University Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. He was a disabled factory worker.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on Aug. 2 at Hudsonville CME Church. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Willie C. Conner officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
He leaves his wife, Paulette S. Hall Raimey; two daughters, TaKesha Hart of Pittsburg, Penn., Raynette Raimey of Chicago, Ill.; a sister, Mollie Raimey of Lamar; two brothers, Elester Raimey, Esker Lee Raimey, both of Painesville, Ohio; and four grandchildren.
Keyanna LaSha Thomas
Keyanna LaSha Thomas, 17, of Potts Camp, died July 30, 2014, at Alliance HealthCare System. She was a member of St. Paul CME Church, an 11th grade student at Holly Springs High School and ROTC.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on Aug. 6 at Eddie L. Smith Multi-Purpose Building. Burial was in Cottrell Memorial Garden. Rev. Charles Dooley officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
She leaves her mother, Angela Thomas of Potts Camp; her father, Glenn Glover of Holly Springs; stepfather, Jeremiah Walton of Holly Springs; two sisters, Tierra Thomas, Kierra Thomas, both of Potts Camp; four brothers, David Thomas, Justin Thomas, both of Potts Camp, Christopher Gilbert of New Albany, LaMarco Withers of Memphis, Tenn.; grandmothers Irene Thomas of Potts Camp, Ella Glover, Betty Turnage, both of Holly Springs; and grandfathers Johnny Ingram and Freddie Glover, both of Holly Springs.
Marian Crews Williams Alsup
Marian Crews Williams Alsup, the daughter of the late Arthur and Letitia Crews, was born in Danville, Virginia, on August 23, 1933. She departed this life on Friday, July 25, 2014, after a brief illness, in Fort Pierce, Florida.
Early in life she joined High Street Baptist Church in Danville, VA. However, after moving to Fort Pierce she joined Goodwill Presbyterian Church where she was an ardent and devoted member, Elder and Clerk of Session, choir member and God’s servant.
She was educated in Danville, Virginia, Public Schools, graduating from Langston High School and Fisk University in Tennessee. She completed her graduate studies at the University of Maine, earning an M.A. in mathematics. Her earliest teaching was in Martinsville, Virginia. Marian married Dr. James B. Williams Jr. and moved to Moss Point, Mississippi, to teach math at Magnolia High School. To that union three children were born. After their divorce in 1966, she moved to Fort Pierce, Florida, where she was an outstanding math teacher in local high schools. Marian was also a Girl Scout leader, leading many cookie drives in the 1970s, and taught part-time at Nova University. Before retiring from teaching in 2001, she served as Coordinator of Math for St. Lucie County. During her retirement, she taught at Indian River State College, where she was recognized as Adjunct Faculty Member of the Year in 2012. Ever active, she worked for H&R Block during tax season and tutored both children and adults who needed help with math.
Marian was a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., the Links and the National Pinochle Association; she played in tournaments across the U.S. Along with playing cards with friends and family, Marian loved crossword puzzles, bowling, The Young and the Restless, and telling jokes and stories. Marian cultivated long-lasting friendships with ease and was known to adopt honorary members of the Crews family at a moment’s notice.
On May 10, 2014, she was united in holy matrimony to Johnny Alsup. They had a brief but wonderful courtship and marriage.
Services were held Monday, July 28, 2014, 6 p.m., at Goodwill Presbyterian Church with Rev. Robert Coleman, pastor, officiating.
She leaves to cherish her memory, along with her husband: her sons, James Williams III (Jackie) of Savannah, GA; Kenneth Williams (Regina) of Collierville, TN; daughter, Ethel Thompson (Dwight) of Collierville, TN; step-daughter, Janice Rose of Bloomington, IN; step-sons John Alsup of West Palm Beach, FL, and Donald Jones of Indianapolis, IN; brother, Richard Crews of Danville, VA; sisters, Juanita Torres of Greensboro, NC, and Sharion Grier of Kokomo, IN; 11 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; a host of family; many friends and the members of Goodwill Presbyterian Church.
She was preceded in death by parents; sisters, Ann Crews and Valerie Calhoun; and a brother, Arthur Crews Jr.
Margaret Freeman Brown
Margaret Freeman Brown, 74, died June 26, 2014, at Jennicare assisted living. She was the widow of Patrick Leon Brown. She went to a one-room school, then Rosenwald and later St. Mary’s School, graduating in 1959. She was a recipient of a full academic sponsorship to Alverno College in Milwaukee, Wisc., from where she graduated in 1963. She began her teaching career in the fall of that year with the Memphis City School system, where she was a dedicated educator for 30 years, retiring from Sheffield Junior High School. After retirement, she volunteered at the DeNouville Learning Center for Women in Memphis, Tenn. She was one of three editors of the “Delightful Recipes Shared With Love Cookbook.” She taught Sunday school at Mt. Pisgah CME Church.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on July 2 at St. Ann Catholic Church, Bartlett, Tenn. Father David Orsak, celebrant. Burial was in Memphis National Cemetery.
She leaves two sisters, Barbara Rayford (James), Lois Freeman, Holly Springs; four brothers, Leroy Freeman (Erma) of Stone Mountain, Ga., Bernard Freeman (Beatrice) of Anchorage, Alaska; caregiver Herbert Salaam of Memphis, Charles Freeman (Ann) of Hammond, La.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Thelma Glasper; and brothers John E. Freeman and Henry Freeman Jr.
Pallbearers were James Rayford Jr., Keith Freeman, Alan Freeman, Kelvin Freeman, James P. Rayford and Donnell Caldwell Jr. Honorary pallbearers were Leroy Freeman, Herbert Salaam, Bernard Freeman, Charles Freeman and James Rayford Sr.
