Linwood Marr
Linwood (Wolf) Marr, 49, of Olive Branch, died March 6, 2009 at his home. He was a disabled farmer.
Services were held at 1 p.m. on March 11 at Mt. Sinai MB Church in Byhalia. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Chris Williams officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
He leaves two sisters, Velma Marr of Olive Branch, Linda Faulkner of Byhalia.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Keith Marr.
Pallbearers were Mario Davis, ,Albert Matthew, Robert Fant, Samuel Ingram, Clifton Rayford and Tony Dockery.
James E. Bert McKinnon
James E. Bert McKinnon, 81, formerly of Holly Springs, died Feb. 28, 2009. He was the widower of Norma McKinnon. In 1947, he moved from Holly Springs to LaGrange, Ill. For more than 40 years, he worked as a brick mason in the construction industry, building homes and business throughout the Chicago area. He retired at the age of 65.
He leaves a son, Stephen Bert McKinnon of LaGrange Park, Ill.; six brothers, Aubrey of LaGrange, Ill., Deloyd of Chicago, Ill., Benard of Maywood, Ill., Gaston of Chicago, Ill, Elihue of Broadview, Ill., Ralph of Chicago, Ill.; six sisters, Joan Pegues, Claudette Jones, both of Memphis, Tenn., Gladys Ashford of Maywood, Ill., Joyce Nevils of Broadview, Ill., Carlean Russell of Washington, D.C., Audria Cummings of Florissant, Mo; and a granddaughter.
Corbin Colonial Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
Pallbearers were Carey D. Ashford, Jonathan Kinkle, Benard McKinnon Jr., Stephen McKinnon, Kelvin Stewart, Vincent Pegues and Lambert McKinnon. Honorary pallbearers were Aubrey McKinnon, Deloyd McKinnon, Benard McKinnon, Rev. Gaston McKinnon, Elihue McKinnon and Ralph McKinnon.
Dr. W.A. McMillan
Dr. William Asbury McMillan, 89, of Holly Springs, died March 14, 2009 at Alliance HealthCare System in Holly Springs. He was the widower of Mildred Newlin McMillan.
Dr. McMillan, a native of North Carolina, received his elementary and high school education at Brunswick County Training School, Southport, N.C. He earned a bachelor’s at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, N.C., graduated with honors (cum laude) in 1942 and in 1944 earned a master’s in history at the University of Michigan. He began teaching in North Carolina after an honorable discharge from the Armed Services in 1946. He started on his doctorate in 1948 at the University of Pennsylvania, married in 1950 and moved to Texas to begin his teaching career at Wiley College in Marshall, Tx. He returned to the University of Michigan, where he was a Fulbright Scholar, and completed his doctorate in educational psychology in 1954. He left Wiley in 1958 to become academic dean at Bethune-Cookman in Daytona Beach, Fla., where he worked until 1964, when he moved to Holly Springs as a consultant to Rust College. He was selected as president of Rust College in 1967, where he remained for 27 years, retiring in 1993. During his 27-year tenure at Rust (1967-1993), the annual budget increased, enrollment tripled and the college became fully accredited. He was a self-described rabble-rouser and fought for civil rights on every front. He remained active in many community groups and remained a community activist, fighting for civil and human rights. On April 27, 2003, Dr. Beckley, president of Rust College, conferred an honorary doctor of humanities degree to Dr. McMillan, immediate past president, during the 137th commencement convocation.
He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church for 45 years and a lifelong member of the NAACP, Boy Scouts of America, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Boule and many other community groups.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at the W.A. McMillan Multi-Purpose Center at Rust College at 11 a.m. on March 21. A special tribute will be held at Asbury United Methodist Church on March 22. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
He leaves two daughters, Paula McMillan Jones of Durham, NC, and Pamela McMillan Edwards and her husband, Kiah Edwards III of Mobile, Ala.; a daughter-in-law, April Vance McMillan; grandsons James Jackson III, Evan McMillan; granddaughters, Nicole Jones, Adrienne Jones, Lauren Jones; sisters-in-law, Doris McMillan and Lillian McMillan; foster sons, and countless nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, William A. McMillan Jr.; three sisters, Lucy, Lula and Mary; four brothers, Frederick, William Louis, John and Augusta; and his granddaughter, Erin Jones.

Sydney Wayne Royston
Sydney Wayne Royston, 61, of Detroit, Mich., formerly of Potts Camp, died March 4, 2009 at his home. He was employed with TRW as a hi-lo driver in 1965, retiring in January 2003.
Services were held at 12 noon on March 14 at Royston Chapel CME Church in Potts Camp, where he was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
He leaves two daughters, Lauren Royston of Detroit, Mich., Leslie Harris of Memphis, Tenn.; his mother, Celestine Royston of Potts Camp; three sisters, Deloris E. Minor of Tupelo, Nestelynn L. Garrett of Detroit, Mich., Jacquelynn A. Royston of Memphis, Tenn.; two brothers, John Royston of Potts Camp, Homer J. Royston of Detroit, Mich.; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, Ulysess Royston.

Thomas Hardy Skelton Jr.
Thomas Hardy Skelton Jr., 66, of Potts Camp, died March 9, 2009 at his home. He was Pentecostal and a maintenance worker with Carrier, Inc.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on March 11 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Hill Crest Cemetery.
He leaves his wife, Ruby Spears Skelton; two sons, Timothy Skelton, Buddy Skelton, both of Potts Camp; his mother, Pauline Skelton Hutchens of Potts Camp; his brother, Stanley Skelton of Holly Springs; his sister, Sue Erwin of Potts Camp; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Sylvia Skelton, and a brother, Butch Skelton.
Ruby Ann Skelton Warr
Ruby Ann Skelton Warr, 62, of Lamar, died March 9, 2009 at her home.
Services were held at 2 p.m. on March 12 at Clear Creek Baptist Church in Lamar. Burial was in the church cemetery. Bro. Don Worsham and Bro. Jim Polk officiated. Serenity Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
She leaves her mother, Cassie Skelton of Lamar; a daughter, Loretta Byrd of Austin, Ark.; a brother, Lewis (Bub) Skelton; five sisters, Janet Skelton, Hazel Skelton, both of Lamar, Linda Sweazy of Myrtle, Faye Culver of Waterford, Brenda Hampton of Jackson, Tenn.; and five grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Jimmy Rogers Skelton.
Pallbearers were Tony Skelton, Eric Yeager, Terry Skelton, Greg Skelton, Derek Reaves and Tommy Skelton. Honorary pallbearers were John Thomas Wilson, Charlie Smith, Michael Byrd and Ray Byrd.
Raymond Young
Raymond Young, 77, of Memphis, Tenn., died March 8, 2009 at Court Manor in Memphis. He was a retired construction laborer.
Services were held at 12 noon on March 13 at Antioch MB Church in Victoria, where he was a member. Burial was in McCraven Cemetery in Victoria. Rev. Etoy Bogard officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
He leaves two sisters, Myrtle Young, Helen Lucas, both of Victoria; and two brothers, Willie Young, Elautry Young Jr., both of Victoria.
