Willie Edward Turnage
Willie Edward Turnage, 56, of Oxford, died July 19, 2014, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North in Oxford. He was a former choir member and a disabled concrete layer.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on July 26 at Hamilton Chapel CME Church in Waterford, where he was a member. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pastor Frank Taylor will officiate. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
He leaves three children, Cameron Turnage, Maiya Turnage of Oxford, Chauncy Turnage of Spring Lake, N.C.; his mother, Laura Ann Byers Turnage of Waterford; four sisters, Marian Taylor of Anchorage, Alaska, Myra Turnage of Stone Mountain, Ga., Phyllis Hubbard of Snellville, Ga., Allison Richmond of West Point; a brother, Rocky Turnage of Waterford; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Cortney Turnage.
Sara Madison Tyson Harris
Sara Madison Tyson Harris, 94, of Clarksdale, Mississippi, died at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland, Mississippi, on July 18, 2014. A family burial will be held at Hill Crest Cemetery on Saturday, July 26, 2014, at 4 p.m. in Holly Springs, Mississippi, with her grandson-in-law, Rev. Samuel Husband officiating. Meredith-Nowell Funeral Home in Clarksdale, Mississippi, is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Harris was born on April 9, 1920, in Holly Springs. She grew up there and later attended The Memphis Academy of Art. During WWII, she moved to San Antonio, Texas, and met her true love, Keith, on a blind date. They married, moved to Clarksdale, and raised their three children.
Mrs. Harris was a charter member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. She was an active member and served on various committees for over fifty years. She is responsible for starting the Chrismon tree and helping to create the ornaments that adorn the sanctuary every Christmas. These ornaments symbolize special events and people in the Bible. She was invited to many other churches throughout the state to help start their Christmon trees. She loved the Lord and served Him in any way she could.
Survivors include her son, William M. Harris (Marcia) of Seattle, WA, and daughters Anne McDaniel (Doug) of Jackson, MS, and Lucy Sawyer (Woody) of Lyon, MS; brother, Dr. Jack Tyson (Helen) of Nashville, TN. She also leaves behind seven grandchildren who affectionately loved her and called her Nana. They are Sara Tyson Husband (Samuel) of Memphis, TN, Dr. Taylor Sawyer (Ellen) of Columbia, SC, Doug McDaniel, Jr. of Birmingham, AL, Caroline McDaniel of Memphis, TN, Mike Powers (Tiffany), Patrick Powers, and Tara Powers of Seattle, WA, and two great-grandchildren, Samuel Husband, Jr. and Grace Powers.
Mrs. Harris was preceded in death by her husband, Keith Roy Harris, her parents, Edmund Taylor Tyson and Anne Martin Greene Tyson, and her brothers, Edmund Tyson, Jr. and Dr. Robert E. Tyson.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Clarksdale or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, or Blair Baston, Friends of Children’s Hospital, Department of Pediatrics, 2500 North State Street, Jackson, MS, 39216.
Charles Tom Edward Anderson
Charles Tom Edward “Buckeyed-Blue” Anderson, 63, of Byhalia, died July 6, 2014, at Trinity Mission Rehab. He was a member of Roberts Chapel CME Church in Holly Springs.
Services were held at 1 p.m. on July 12 at H.W. Byers High School gymnasium in Mt. Pleasant. Pastor Arthur Fitchpatrick officiated. Burial was in Roberts Chapel CME Church Cemetery. Serenity-Autry Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
He leaves his wife, Adella Anderson; two sons, Michael Anderson (Angela) of Waterford, Bruce Anderson of Slayden; two daughters, Zenolia Anderson of Byhalia, Jalessa Robinson of Memphis, Tenn.; his mother, Queenester Anderson of Chicago, Ill.; sisters Queenella Dortch (Robert), Annie Ruth, Mary Raimey (Larry) all of Chicago, Deloise Isom of Collierville, Tenn.; and 14 grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Antonio Raimey, Nathaniel Westbrook, Issac Hunt, Orlando Raimey Jr., Terrence McGaughey and Johnny Dowdy. Honorary pallbearers were James Williams, Michael Williams, Anthony Williams, Leo Luellen, Lent Anderson and Willie Earl Roberts Jr.
He was preceded in death by one son, Daron Anderson.
Sarah Cook
Sarah Virginia Cook, 86, died July 12, 2014, at Oxford Health & Rehab. She was the widow of George Calvin Cook and a member of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church.
Services were held at 2 p.m. on July 14 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Mt. Moriah Cemetery. Dr. Curtis Ferrell officiated.
She leaves a son, Alan Cook of Laws Hill; two daughters, Dianne Cook of Holly Springs, Sandra Billingsley of Laws Hill; five sisters, Nell Davis of Southaven, Grace Leake of Memphis, Tenn., Jane Timbs of Olive Branch, Elaine Leake, Nina Wingo, both of Oxford; eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Pallbearers were Jimmy Nicholson, Terry Davis, Tim Timbs, Donald Cash, Tim Davis and Joey Gardner.
Vera Nylene Cox
Vera Nylene Cox, 76, of Ashland, died July 8, 2014, at Baptist Hospital-DeSoto in Southaven. She was a homemaker and a member of Ashland Church of Christ.
Services were held at 2 p.m. on July 10 at Ashland Church of Christ with burial in the church cemetery. Bro. Larry Cox and Bro. David Jordan officiated. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
She leaves her husband, Lavell Cox of Ashland; a daughter, Anissa Yancey (Joey) of Ripley; two sisters, Ezell Harris of Olive Branch and Wilma Jordan of Ashland; one grandchild, Cody Murphy.
Oliver Lehmann Edwards
Oliver Lehmann Edwards, 96, of Hickory Flat, died July 8 at his home. He was the widower of Alma Wilson Edwards. He was an Army veteran of WWII and a farmer.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on July 10 at Pine Grove Baptist Church, where he was a member with burial in the church cemetery. Bro. Clyde Thompson and Bro. Randy Hamilton officiated. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
He leaves a son, Tommy L. Edwards (Adelina) of Water Valley; two daughters, Shirley Brewer of Gerald, Mo., and Debarah Thompson (David) of Hickory Flat; two half-brothers, Archie Edwards Jr. of Hickory Flat, and Cecil Edwards of Las Vegas, Nev.; one half-sister, Frances Massengill of Hickory Flat; eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
James Willie Ford Jr.
James Willie Ford Jr., 56, of Holly Springs, died Monday, July 7, 2014, at Methodist Hospital in Olive Branch. He was a member of Finley Grove MB Church and a disabled construction worker with Jimmy Shipp Construction.
Services were held at 1 p.m. on July 13 at Holy Family School Auditorium with burial in Finley Grove M.B. Church Cemetery. Rev. James C. Green officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
He leaves two daughters, LaTonya Dawson of Chicago, Ill., NaKita Stinson of Holly Springs; two sons, Marques Ford and James Stinson, both of Holly Springs; his mother, Annie Lee Boyden of Dallas, Texas, his father, James W. Ford Sr. of Holly Springs; five sisters, Joyce Brown and Carolyn Ford of Holly Springs, Margaret Hughes of Collierville, Tenn., FaKisha Griffin and Arnita Ford of Dallas; three brothers, Carlos Ford, William Ford and John Ford, all of Holly Springs; four grandchildren; and his fiancee Laverne Stinson of Holly Springs.
Vannie Gatewood
Vannie Gatewood, 63, of Byhalia, died July 3, 2014, at the Baptist East Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. He was a member of the Straightway Gospel Tabernacle Church LICM. He was called into the ministry and only preached a few times.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on July 12 at Newell Chapel CME Church in Byhalia. Pastor Gerald K. Smith officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.
He leaves his mother, “Ma’Bee” Norvia Ella Gatewood; children Linda D. Sykes of Memphis, Tenn., Tyrone Elliott of Memphis, Melvin Sykes of Byhalia, Kelvin Sykes (Archelle) of Memphis; brothers Velva Lee Gatewood of Memphis, Henry C. Gatewood of Jacksonville, Fla., John W. Gatewood, Terry L. Gatewood (Mary), Wallace C. Gatewood (Brenda) of Byhalia, Winford Neeley (Betty) of Olive Branch, Alvin Preacher (Dennie) of Holly Springs; sisters, Lillie M. Brown, Alameda Smith (Gerald) of Byhalia, Loretta Gates (Wade) of Tupelo, Kathryn Houston of Memphis; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Willie L. Gatewood, Arthur Gatewood, Elvin Gatewood; and a sister, Earnestine Gatewood-Sykes.
Pallbearers were Shedrick Gatewood, Elvin Gatewood, Thomas Sykes, Melvin Brown, Tony Brown, DeShonnon Gatewood and Henry Gatewood Jr. Honorary pallbearers were Kelvin Sykes, Velva Gatewood, Henry Gatewood, John Gatewood, Tyrone Elliott, Terry Gatewood and Wallace Gatewood.
