OCEAN SPRINGS - Mrs. Florence Dorothy Colburn, 74, died Monday, Nov. 30, 1998, in Ocean Springs. Mrs. Colburn was born in Dorchester, Mass., and was a graduate of Dorchester High School for Girls. She was formerly employed with Keystone Camera in Boston and Bostonian Shoes in Whitman, Mass. She had been a resident of Ocean Springs for the past 25 years. She was a member of TOPS in Ocean Springs where she was the 1991 Charm and Beauty Queen of Mississippi. She attended Wesley United Methodist Church in Ocean Springs. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Madeline Patterson; a sister, Althea Cooper; and three brothers, Charles Patterson Jr., Herman Patterson, and William "Billy" Patterson. Survivors include her husband, Melvin Hugh Colburn of Ocean Springs; two daughters, Candice Colburn Crespo of LaCombe, La., and Melanie Florence Cook of Baton Rouge; three sons, Paul Allen Colburn Sr. of Abington, Mass., Richard Hugh Colburn of Destin, Fla., and Jeffrey Lemoine Colburn of Martinez, Ga.; two sisters, Madeline Gallant of King of Pressia, Pa., and Mildred McGuiness of Uxbridge, Mass.; a brother, George Patterson of Tucson, Ariz.; and 12 grandchildren. Visitation was held Tuesday evening at the Ocean Springs Chapel of Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Homes. A service will be at 1 p.m. today at the funeral home chapel with burial in Crestlawn Cemetery.

KILN - Lunnie M. Cuevas, 65, of the Standard-Dedeaux Community, died Monday, Nov. 30, 1998, in Gulfport. Mrs. Cuevas was a native and lifelong resident of Hancock County. He was a member of Wolfe Creek Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by his parents, Burdice Joseph and Emma Perkins Rester. Survivors include her husband, Barney Cuevas of the Standard-Dedeaux Community; three sons, Feddie Cuevas of Lakeshore and Prentice Cuevas and Austion Cuevas, both of Standard-Dedeaux; four daughters, Emily Head of DeLisle, Linda Huskey, Wanda Peterson and Arleane Cuevas, all of Standard-Dedeaux; a brother, Burdice Rester of Standard-Dedeaux; three sisters, Carolyn Castawon of Lizana, Vercie Mae Cuevas and Jannie Powe, both of Standard-Dedeaux; 18 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. A service will be at 2 p.m. today at the residence of Vercie Mae Cuevas, 25069 Road 203, Standard-Dedeaux Community. Burial will be in Wolfe Creek Cemetery in Hancock County. Jack Edwards Jr.

LONG BEACH - Jack "J.P." Edwards Jr., 75, a resident of Long Beach since 1965, died Monday, November 30, 1998, in Long Beach. Mr. Edwards was born in Poplarville, to Annie Odom Edwards and Jacob Edwards on January 17, 1923. He worked for Colonial Baking Company 28 years as a salesman and supervisor in Gulfport and Hattiesburg. After retiring from Colonial, he went to work for HBG Coffee Co. of Mobile, Ala., on the Coast. After 10 years with the coffee company, he went to work for the City of Long Beach as security guard at the Long Beach Harbor, where he worked for 10 years. He was a member of the St. Thomas Catholic Church in Long Beach. Mr. Edwards leaves his wife, Mary Forte Edwards, after 57 years of married life; his children, Jack P. Edwards III of Pascagoula, Charles "Chuck" M. Edwards of Laurel, Bridget Pickering of Long Beach, Charlotte Marie Nealy of Gulfport; nine grandchildren, Melanie Ann Davila, Stephanie Faucet, Gina Edwards, Jack Paul Edwards, Christopher Pickering, Katie M. Boren, Chase Edwards, Cameron Edwards and Chad Gray; and two great-grandchildren, Andrew Purdy and Jacob Faucet. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 tonight, December 2, at the Riemann Funeral Home in Long Beach. The funeral procession will leave the funeral home at 9:50 a.m. Thursday and will go to St. Thomas Catholic Church in Long Beach for the celebration of the funeral Mass at 10 a.m. A committal service will be at 2 p.m. in Highland Park Cemetery in Hattiesburg.

GULFPORT - Shelton Graves, 87, died Monday, Nov. 30, 1998, in Gulfport. Mr. Graves was a member of Riley Chapel United Methodist Church in Gulfport, where he was a member of The Methodist Men, Church School and was a former member of Trustees and Building Committee. He also worked for the Gulfport V.A. for 39 years, receiving three service pins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Lorenza Graves. Survivors include his wife, Mildred Lewis Graves of Gulfport; and a goddaughter, Tara Johnson Thomas of Fayetteville, N.C. He was cared for by Jacquelyn Wells Johnson, Phillip Johnson Jr. and Barney Ray, all of Gulfport. GULFPORT - Michael D. "Mad Dog" Mandel, 36, died Sunday, Nov. 29, 1998, in Gulfport. Mr. Mandel was a native of San Antonio and had been a resident of Gulfport since 1974. He was the first quadriplegic in the world to skydive, making a total of 24 jumps. He was also the first quadriplegic to have a Class A sky-diving license. He attended River of Life Church of God in Gulfport. He was preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth Mandel. Survivors include his mother, June Mandel of Gulfport; his father, David Mandel of Pass Christian; his stepfather, John Oglialoro of Lyman; a brother, Michael Oglialoro of Pass Christian; a sister, Becky Mandel Drounette of Gulfport; and his grandparents, A.H. and Medair Ellis of Harlingen, Texas, and Lorraine Beecher of Stockdale, Texas. LUMBERTON - Mr. R.D. Richardson, 74, died Tuesday, Dec. 1, 1998, in Hattiesburg. Mr. Richardson was a native of the Rose Hill Community in Brookhaven. He was a retired self employed carpenter and served during World War II in the Army. He was ordained in 1982 and was a member of Sweet Beulah Baptist Church in Lumberton, where he served as a Sunday School teacher. Mr. Richardson was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 696. Mr. Schroeder was a native of Grand Rapids, Mich., and had been a resident of Bay St. Louis. He was a member of the Bay St. Louis Volunteer Fire Department. OCEAN SPRINGS - Retired U.S. Navy CPO John M. Strak, 65, died Monday, November 30, 1998, in Ocean Springs. CPO Strak had been a resident of the community for 19 years. He retired after 24 years in the U.S. Navy and worked for Sherwin Williams in Middletown, Rhode Island, and for Ingalls Shipbuilding. Mr. Strak also retired from CDI Marine. Survivors include his wife, Sharon Strak of Ocean Springs; four sons, Michael John Strak of Tiverton, R.I., Mark James Strak, Mitchell Jay Strak and Martin Jeri Strak, all of Ocean Springs; his mother, Lois R. Strak of Sheboygan, Wisc.; a sister, Janet Green of Green Bay, Wisc.; 10 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. PEARLINGTON - Ada Arlene M. Egan, 86, died Saturday, Nov. 28, 1998, in Picayune. Mrs. Egan was a native of Hope, Ark., and a resident of Pearlington for the past 40 years. She was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church in Bay St. Louis and was secretary/treasurer of Crown Equipment Company in Bay St. Louis. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dan Egan; two sons, Jay Egan and Buckley Egan; and her parents, James Henry and Clara Tally Martin. Survivors include a son, Dan M. GULFPORT - Vera C. Hogan, 88, of 901 West Birch Dr., died Saturday, Nov. 20, 1998, in Ocean Springs. Mrs. Hogan was born Oct. 20, 1910, in Reardan, Wash. She had been a longtime resident of Burlington, Iowa, before residing in Gulfport. She had been a bookkeeper for the Buick and Pontiac dealerships in Keokuk and later was employed for Hawkeye Motors in Burlington. She was an Avon representative. She was a 1973 graduate of LaSalle University where she received a degree in interior decorating. She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Maude Louise Horner Fisher; a brother, Charles S. Fisher; and a grandson, Robbie Fisher. Survivors include her husband, William B. Hogan; a son, William R. Fisher; a daughter, Bonnie C. GULFPORT - Jasper A. "Ken" Kennington, 66, died Sunday, Nov. 29, 1998, in Gulfport. Mr. Kennington was a native of Lancaster, S.C., and a resident of the Coast for 35 years. He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War and was retired from the Air Force and the U.S. Postal Service. He was a life member of the VFW, past VFW Commander, First District Junior Vice Commander, life member of the MOC, past SEAM Squirrel Supreme 6th District Mississippi State Representative, and member of the Grey Beards. He was a Baptist. He was preceded in death by his wife, Emile Kennington; his father, Percy J. Kennington; and a sister, Lucille Kellams. Survivors include a longtime companion, Maudie Wisniewski of Gulfport; his mother, Thelma Bass of Beaumont, Texas; two daughters, Mary Landrum of Saucier and Peggy Arrenburg of Natchitoches, La.; two sisters, Betty Rich of Beaumont and Hazel Taylor of Lancaster; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 tonight at Riemann Memorial Funeral Home, U.S. 49 North, Gulfport. A service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home chapel with burial in Coalville Cemetery in Woolmarket. The family prefers memorials to VFW National Home Post 3937, Long Beach.

ORANGE BEACH, Ala. - Robert P. Lanning, 62, died Sunday, Nov. 29, 1998, in Biloxi after a long illness. Survivors include his wife, Ann Lanning of Orange Beach; two daughters, Linda Ausburn of Gulf Shores, Ala., and Shirley Rosaneu of Amherst, Ohio; two sons, Robert P. Lanning Jr. of Huntington Valley, Pa., and Kenneth Lanning of Fairless Hills, Pa.; and seven grandchildren. A graveside service will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Biloxi National Cemetery. D'IBERVILLE - Annie F. Mallett, 79, of D'Iberville, died Sunday, Nov. 29, 1998, in D'Iberville. Mrs. Mallett has lived on the Coast for 46 years. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lamar Mallett; her parents, Joseph and Mary Fenech; a brother, Johnny Fenech. Survivors include three sons, Glenn A. Mallett, Craig S. Mallett and Vernon L. Mallett, all of D'Iberville; one brother, James Fenech of New Orleans, LA; one niece, Ann Meyer of New Orleans, LA; and one granddaughter, Amber Mallett of Lake Oswego, Oregon. A service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 3, 1998, at the Howard Avenue Chapel of Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Homes in Biloxi where friends may call one hour before service time. Michael D. Mandel

GULFPORT - Michael D. "Mad Dog" Mandel, 36, of Gulfport, died Sunday, Nov. 29, 1998, in Gulfport. Mr. Mandel was a native of San Antonio and a resident of Gulfport since 1974. He was the first quadraplegic in the world to skydive, making a total of 24 jumps. He was also the first quadraplegic to have a Class A sky diving license. He was an artist and attended River of Life Church of God in Gulfport. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Max and Viola Mandel; and a brother, Kenneth Mandel. Survivors include his mother, June Mandel of Gulfport; his father, David Mandel of Pass Christian; his stepfather, John Oglialoro of Lyman; a brother, Michael Oglialoro of Pass Christian; a sister, Becky Mandel Drounette of Gulfport; and his grandparents, A.H. and Medair Ellis of Harlingen, TX, and Lorraine Beecher of Stockdale, TX. A service will be at 8 p.m. Thursday at Riemann Memorial Funeral Home, U.S. 49 North, Gulfport, where friends may call two hours before service time. LONG BEACH - Mrs Mildred Mae Beech Salters, 82, died Sunday, Nov. 29, 1998, in Gulfport. Mrs. Salters was a native of Long Beach. She was a homemaker and was a member of Central Baptist Church in Long Beach. She was preceded in death by her parents, Willie and Ida Beech; a granddaughter, Jennifer Salters; and two sisters, Mert M. Hammons and Sue Beech. Survivors include her husband, Rube Salters; a son, Thomas Salters, both of Long Beach; two daughters, Judy Durel of Long Beach and Patsy Capers of Saucier; two sisters, Joyce Alexander of Long Beach and Evertta Franke of Riceville; a brother, Billy Beech of Gulfport; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
