He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Callie Evetts Burcham; and two sisters, Cora Keeton and Annie Bingham. Survivors include three brothers, James Clayton Burcham of Corinth, Randale Burcham of Memphis and Clabern Burcham of Savannah, Tenn.; and two sisters, Velma Steen and Chesteen McCallester, both of Corinth. JACKSON - Mary Asbury Crouch, 96, died Tuesday, May 30, 2000, in Jackson. Mrs. Crouch was a native of Clarkesville, Ga., and was a former resident of Hattiesburg and Gulfport. She had been a resident of Jackson since 1990. She was a member of a number of civic clubs, social clubs and church activities. She was a member of St. James Episcopal Church in Jackson where she was a member of the Altar Guild. Survivors include a daughter, Mary C. Rawson of Jackson; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. today at Live Oak Cemetery in Pass Christian. He was a retired veteran after serving 13 years and was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church in Colorado City. He was preceded in death by his mother, Emma Bracy. WELLSVILLE, Ohio - Nancy Lee Yost Mathews Guericke, 56, of Maple Avenue, died Sunday, May 28, 2000, in Pittsburgh, Pa. Mrs. Guericke was born Jan. 29, 1944, in East Liverpool, Ohio, was a 1961 graduate of Wellsville High School and a 1962 graduate of A & G School of Beauty Culture of East Liverpool. She was a former resident of Gulfport. She was an Army veteran serving as a medical specialist. She was a homemaker and a Protestant. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Edward L. Mathews; and her parents, William J. and Ruth A. Boley Yost. Survivors include her husband, Alvert Guericke of Wellsville; three daughters, Mrs. James "Yvonne" Roy of Bangor, Maine, Mrs. Derf "Katherine" Caudill of Wiggins, and Michelle Mathews of East Liverpool, Ohio; two sons, James Edward Mathews and David Wayne Mathews, both of Gulfport; a brother, William James Yost of Wellsville; and 15 grandchildren. Mr. Laurie was a native and former resident of New Orleans, LA, and had been a resident of Pass Christian for fifteen years. He was a retired marine insurance adjuster and former AS Port Purser with States Marine Lines. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II as a Chief Administrative Supply Officer. He was a deacon at Lake Forest Baptist Church, New Orleans, and a member of Diamondhead Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Emma Jenkins Laurie of Pass Christian; two daughters, Catherine Veque and husband, Sonny of Huntsville, AL, and Elaine Duplechaine and husband, Roger of Houston, TX; a son, Lawrence F. Laurie Jr., and wife, Doreen of Houston, TX; two sisters, Frances Sommers of New Orleans, LA, and Cecile Panepinto of Harvey, LA; and three grandchildren; Michelle Veque, Justin Laurie and Carlynn Laurie. He was Marine Corps veteran of the Korean Conflict and was named to the High School Football Hall of Fame in Akron, Ohio. He was a Catholic. He retired from the U.S.D.A Department of Fresh Fruit and Vegetables as an inspector after 30 years of service and had been a resident of the Coast since 1977. He was a Marine Corps veteran and was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Long Beach from 1977 where he held several positions. He was preceded in death by his father, Harry L. Notter Sr.; his mother, Maude Byrd; his stepfather, Richard Byrd; and a sister, Lilly Hnatyshyn. Survivors include his wife, Edna Hale Notter of Long Beach; a son, Michael L. Notter of Gulfport; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Patton was a lifetime resident of Harrison County and was retired from Ingalls as a welder coordinator after 33 years of service. He was a former Baptist minister of 25 years, and a dairyman. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Wilson Patton; a son, Owen E. Patton Jr.; nine brothers and sisters, Eula Burrows, Ida Johnson, Ada Reeves, Harvey Patton, Ollie J. Patton, Clayton Patton Sr., Bernice Patton, Joel Patton, and Adrema Patton. BILOXI - Arthur Marcellas Vuyovich Jr., 79, died Tuesday, May 30, 2000, in Gulfport.
Mr. Vuyovich was born in Biloxi and was a resident of Lakewood, N.J., for 30 years. He had been a resident of the Gulf Coast since 1993. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and retired from the Navy after 32 years of service. He was employed as a fireman at the Lakehurst Naval Air Station in New Jersey for 20 years and was a life member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks in Lakewood. He was preceded in death by his parents, "Otto Mike" and Marie Vuyovich; a son, Frank J. Vuyovich; a sister, Dorothy Balius; and two brothers, Harold Vuyovich and Edward Vuyovich. Survivors include his wife, Alta F. Vuyovich of Biloxi; a son, Arthur M. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Olita Kitchens; and numerous brothers and sisters. BILOXI - Elzena Fountain, 88, died Saturday August 5, 2000 in Biloxi. Mrs. Fountain was brought up in Brueton, Alabama. She lived and married in Biloxi, Mississippi. She worked many years at Edgewater Gulf Hotel and the Broadwater Beach Hotel. She then moved to California in 1945 and raised her family there. Then she moved back to Mississippi to take care of her ill mother. She died of complications due to cancer and Alzheimers. Fountain Sr. in 1928 and divorced in 1947. She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Dora Lindsey; three daughters, Joan Fountain, Rowena Hoffman and Betty Gloria Fountain; one brother, Frederick Fountain; and three sisters, Rowena Tillman, Dorothy Rheinhart and Dora Fargo. Survivors include three daughters, Geraldine McGinley of Anaheim, California, Maxine Enos of Hayward, California, and Jean Shaw of Richmond, California; four sons, L.J. Fountain Jr. of Bay St. Louis, Eldred Fountain of Biloxi, Ronald Fountain of Castro Valley, California, and Robert Fountain of Anaheim, California; two sisters, Inona Redding of Chesapeake, Virginia, and Carolie Cook of Tampa, Florida; one brother, James Rufus Lindsey Jr. of Pascagoula; 28 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren. Visitation was held from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, August 8, at the Howard Avenue Chapel of Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Homes in Biloxi. Services will be at 10 a.m. today, August 9, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Fountain Cemetery.

Charles Franzen Jr.
DIAMONDHEAD - Charles Franzen Jr., 80, died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, in Diamondhead. Mr. Franzen was a native of Brooklyn, N.Y., and a resident of Diamondhead and Kiln. He was a Methodist. He was with the Hillsdale Fire Department in New Jersey for 35 years and the Hillsdale Volunteer Ambulance Service for 20 years. He had been a member of Masonic Lodge No. 325 of Warrensburg, N.Y., since 1943, and the Knight Temple. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a Shriner. He served as a merchant marine in World War II and was a member of the American Merchant Marine Veterans Association of the Gulf Coast. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Caroline Bohleber Franzen Sr. Survivors include his wife, Lillian Franzen of Kiln; a daughter, Caroline Collignon of Glens Falls, N.Y.; two sons, Charles Franzen III of Kiln and Robert Franzen of North Chili, N.Y.; a sister, Violet Scully of Montvale, N.J.; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Edmond Fahey Funeral Home in Bay St. Louis is in charge of arrangements.

GULFPORT - Jewel G. Johnson, 75, died Monday, Aug. 7, 2000, in Gulfport. Mrs. Johnson was a native of Georgianna, Ala., and a longtime resident of the Gulf Coast. She graduated high school in Georgianna and was employed as a secretary at Pass Road Baptist Church of which she was a member. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Newton G. Johnson Sr.; a brother, Foster Gorum; and a sister, Ruby Garner. Survivors include a son, Guy Johnson of Long Beach; a daughter, Kathy Johnson of Gulfport; and three grandchildren. Visitation will be after noon today at Riemann Funeral Home, 25th Ave., Gulfport, with a service to follow at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Oakwood Cemetery in Georgianna, Ala. SAN FRANCISCO - Rodney M. Rawls, 45, died Friday, Aug. 4, 2000, in San Francisco. Mr. Rawls was a native of Oxford and had lived in Gulfport most of his life. POPLARVILLE - Arthur Hugo Shaw Sr., 82, died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000, in Poplarville. Mr. Shaw was a resident of Poplarville and a lifelong member of Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He was a retired civil service employee at Gulfport V.A. Hospital and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Sherrard Byrd Masonic Lodge No. 353. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gilbert and Melvina Shaw; and a daughter, Angela Lucille Shaw. Survivors include his wife, Mary Frances Shaw of Poplarville; a son, Rev. Arthur Hugo Shaw Jr. of Henleyfield; a daughter, Sheila Cruthird of Wiggins; two sisters, Calona Smith of Poplarville and Stella Bacon of Massachusetts; and four grandchildren. PASCAGOULA - Thomas Kent Stephenson, 53, died Monday, Aug. 7, 2000, in Pascagoula. Mr. Stephenson was born Jan. 29, 1947, in Moulton, Ala. He was a graduate of Auburn University and was employed as senior distributions application programmer supervisor at Ingalls Shipbuilding for 27 years. He was a musician and a former member of First Baptist Church of Pascagoula Orchestra and the Mobile Popps Orchestra. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas B. and Mary Louise Stephenson. Survivors include his wife, Freda Ann Stephenson of Pascagoula; and three daughters, Heather Marie Pozzo of Batesville, Ariz., Emily Caroline Stephenson of Dallas, Texas, and Amanda Louise Stephenson of Pascagoula. SIGNAL MOUNTAIN, Tenn. - Marianne Byham Tillman, 51, died Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2000, in Signal Mountain. Mrs. Tillman was a native of Philadelphia, Pa., and had been a resident of the Chattanooga, Tenn., area for the past 10 years. She was retired from Associates in Communication Disorders of Chattanooga where she was in private practice as well as serving Rivermont Elementary, Tyner Middle and High School, Scenic Land School, Open Arms Care, Inc., and several schools in north Georgia. She was a member of the American Speech, Language and Hearing Association and the Tennessee Speech, Language, and Hearing Association. He was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church in Signal Mountain where she was a facilitator for adult study groups, greeter, lector and eucharistic minister. Survivors include her husband, Dr. Larry Tillman of Signal Mountain; a son, Lt. Jeff Tillman of Kailua, Hawaii; her parents, Richard and Catherine Byham of Mt. Holly, N.J.; and four brothers, Richard Byham of Atlanta, Frank Byham of Binghamton, N.Y., Robert Byham and Joseph Byham, both of Mt. Holly. A service was held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Burial will be today at 10 a.m. in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens in Gulfport.
