PASS CHRISTIAN - Mrs. Marion Lucille Merritt, 76, died Friday, Feb. 6, 1998, in Pass Christian.
Mrs. Blass was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Layton and Elmina Sarrat Merritt; and a daughter, Sandra Elizabeth Fries.
Survivors include her husband, W. Joel Blass of Pass Christian; three daughters, Marion Couvillion and Marie Faust, both of Starkville, and Pamela Lawhead of Oxford; four sisters, Audrey Jarreau of Pass Christian, Mina Bury of Austin, Texas, Evelyn Merritt of New Orleans and Louise Gonzales-Rubio of Baranquilla, Columbia, South America; three brothers, C. Layton Merritt Jr., T. Buxton Merritt Sr., and G. Edward Merritt, all of New Orleans; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:30 a.m. today at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Pass Christian, where friends may call two hours before the Mass. Interment will be in St. Paul Cemetery. Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Home in Gulfport is in charge of arrangements.

Paul V. Carroll

PERKINSTON - Paul V. Carroll, 50, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 1998, in Perkinston.
Mr. Carroll was born in Biloxi and remained a lifelong resident of the Mississippi Gulf Coast. He was a veteran of the Marine Corps and served during the Vietnam War. He was a member of Northside Assembly of God Church in St. Martin.
He was preceded in death by a son, Anthony Clark; and a sister, Deloren Carroll.
Survivors include his wife, Martha Carroll of Perkinston; three daughters, Patricia Carroll and Paula Carroll, both of Perkinston, and Michelle Lasiter of N.C.; his parents, Vincent and Lorretta Carroll of Latimer; six sisters, Patricia Charron of The Colony, Texas, Judy Knuth of Gautier, Kay Enterkin of Ocean Springs, Thelma Carroll of Carriere, Lynn Enterkin of Pascagoula and Rose Carroll of Biloxi; three brothers, Robert Leon Carroll of Latimer, Thomas Carroll and Scott Carroll, both of Ocean Springs; and seven grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Howard Avenue Chapel of Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Homes in Biloxi. A procession will then leave the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. for a graveside service at 11 a.m. in Biloxi National Cemetery.
Donald B. Geist
VANCLEAVE - Donald B. Geist, 73, died Friday, February 6, 1998, in a tragic automobile accident outside Mobile, Alabama.
Mr. Geist was born January 3, 1925, in Coolsprings, Pennsylvania. He had been a resident of Vancleave since 1984. Donald was a retired business owner and consultant and a World War II Navy veteran.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Louisa Geist; and companion, John Kissinger of Vancleave.
Survivors include longtime companion Douglas Anderson of Vancleave; two brothers, Cliff Geist of Niagra Falls, New York, and Richard Hadden of Phoenix, Arizona; four sisters, Debra Gotwald, Jean Wills, Joyce Bertz and Audrey Beatty, all of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Donald's vibrant and colorful personality won him the love and admiration of many friends and business associates. He will be sorely missed by all.

SAUCIER - Mr. Roy E. Monk Jr., age 35 and a resident of Saucier, did Saturday, February 7, 1998, near Saucier.
Mr. Monk was a native of Biloxi and a lifetime resident of the Coast.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Julie Lynn Creel; and is survived by his parents, Roy and Sharon Monk of Gulfport; brothers, Tim Monk of Pass Christian and Lance Monk of Indiana; a nephew, Steven Creel; and by his grandparents, Jeanette and Leo Coleman of Biloxi; and several nieces and nephews.

GULFPORT - Oden "Jack" Scott, 73, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 1998, in Jackson.
Mr. Scott was born in Carthage and had been a resident of Gulfport since 1961. He was a Baptist. Mr. Scott retired from the Army in 1964 as SFC after over 22 years of service and was also retired from civil service from the Department of Agriculture-Forest Disease Laboratory in 1980 after 17 years. He was the V.A. Volunteer Service Representative for Miss. for 13 years. He was a member and past Exalted Ruler of the Gulfport Elks Lodge No. 978. Mr. Scott was also a former District Deputy for the Grand Exalted Ruler and was Vice President South for the State Elks Association.
Survivors include his wife, Frances H. Scott of Gulfport; a daughter, Donna Spackman of Cedar Park, Texas; two sons, Scott D. Scott of Breaux Bridge, La., and Douglas J. Scott of Glendale, Ariz.; three sisters, Wihlena Catledge and Zetha Williams, both of Pearl, and Waudene Harvill of Clinton; four grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

WAVELAND - Miss Cecile Elvina "Miss Dick" Turcotte, 78, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 1998, in Bay St. Louis.
Miss Turcotte was a member of St. Clare Catholic Church in Waveland, Mississippi. She was a graduate of Mississippi Southern College (now the University of Southern Mississippi), was a retired school teacher with the Bay-Waveland School District, and was a member of the National Retired Teachers Association and The American Association of Retired Persons.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter Francis Turcotte Sr. and Cecile Carrio Turcotte; and three sisters, Miss Evelyn Turcotte, Mrs. Edna T. Bourgeois and Mrs. Stella T. Schwander.
Survivors include a brother, Walter Francis Turcotte Jr. of Waveland, MS.; two sisters, Miss Mary Margaret Turcotte and Mrs. Shirley Piazza, both of Waveland, Miss.; nine nephews; five nieces; 11 grandnephews; 15 grandnieces; three great-grandnephews; and a great-grandniece.

GULFPORT - JoAnne Green Watts, 61, of 1110 Lewis Ave., died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 1998, in Gulfport.
Mrs. Watts was born April 12, 1936, in Kirby and had been a resident of Gulfport since the late 1960s. She was a gradaute of Alcorn State University and was a school teacher at Pass Christian Middle School where she retired in 1993. She was a member of Haven Chapel United Methodist Church in Gulfport.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Watts; her parents, Joe Green and Emily Doll Green; and two sisters.
Survivors include three sons, Charles Watts of Gulfport, Cartrell Watts of Atlanta and Tracey Watts of New Orleans; a daughter, Regina Watts of Gulfport; two sisters, Jewrel Reed of Lockport, Ill., and Wanda Smith of Brookhaven; and a grandson.

Mrs. Baggs was a native of Delhi, La., and a resident of Biloxi since 1995. He was a member of the D'Iberville Christian Assembly Church of God.

PASCAGOULA - Andrew "Vernon" Cheeks, 76, died Sunday, Sept. 24, 2000, in Pascagoula.
Mr. Cheeks was born July 10, 1924, in Laurel and had been a resident of Pascagoula since 1970. He was a member of the Mount Zion Methodist Church in Ellisville and was a Shriner with the Masonic Lodge in Pascagoula. He was the treasurer for the Submarine Veterans of World War II in Pascagoula.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Kelley Dianne Cheeks.

Mr. Martin was a native and lifelong resident of the Gulf Coast. He was an Army veteran of World War II and retired from the city of Gulfport Public Works Department after 25 years of service. He was a member of West Gulfport Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ora and Sara Ann Martin.

FLORENCE, S.C. - Patrick Tyler McNally, 12, of Florence, SC, was called home to God on Saturday morning, September 23, 2000, after a lifelong illness.
Tyler was born in Jackson, Mississippi on March 16, 1988. He had been a resident of Florence for 10 years. He was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church where he had served as an acolyte. He attended the seventh grade at St. Anthony's Catholic School and was a member of the school's drama club.
Surviving are his parents, Pat and Vicki Vincent McNally of Florence; a sister, Jessica McNally of the home; his maternal grandfather, Tony Vincent, Jr., of Tallulah, Louisiana; 13 aunts, nine uncles, and 21 cousins.
Tyler's life was short but packed with an enthusiasm for living that never slowed him down, and he had a spirit that made the very best of every second of his days. He loved sports of all kinds and was an artist whose paintings conveyed the brightest of colors and images. He was a gift to those who loved him and an inspiration to everyone he met.
A Mass of Christian burial will be Celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. Anthony's Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery directed by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home.
A Christian Wake Service with Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Monday at Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home with the family receiving friends afterwards until 9 p.m.

Mrs. Noble was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church. She was employed in Civil Service at Brookley Field, and retired from Keesler Air Force Base.

BILOXI - Retired Air Force Lt. Colonel Harold Olsen died Thursday, Sept. 21, 2000, in Bay St. Louis.
Mr. Olsen was a native of Chicago and had been a resident of Biloxi for the past 25 years. He graduated from the University of Illinois where he received his second lieutenant's commission in 1939. He served as personnel classification and assignment officer at Keesler Air Force Base, served as personnel management officer for Hq Third Air Force, Tampa, Fla., and was an executive officer of the Black Widow Squadron. He retired from Mechanic's Choice Corporation of Philadelphia, Pa., where he served as territory manager for South Mississippi and Southeast Louisiana. He was a member of the Retired Officer's Association of America, Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity and First Methodist Church of Biloxi.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Crel Olsen; and his parents, Mary and Nels Olsen.
Survivors include a son, Harold "Buz" Olsen of Bay St. Louis; a daughter, Mary Jo Ballard, two grandchildren and a great-granchild.

BILOXI - Rev. Sampson "S.P." Patterson, 90, died Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000, in Biloxi.
Rev. Patterson was born in 1909 in Simpson County and was a former member of Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Mendenhall. He was a former resident of Cleveland, Ohio, and was employed with the city of Biloxi for many years as a maintenance worker. He retired June 30, 1985. He was a member of Main Street Missionary Baptist Church in Biloxi where he served as a Sunday School teacher and was a member of the Brotherhood.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Patterson, and two sons, Monroe Patterson and Elijah Patterson.
Survivors include two sons, Jimmy Patterson of Cleveland, and Castoria Patterson of Lexington, Ky.; a daughter, Lydia Patterson of Cleveland, 20 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

PASS CHRISTIAN - John "Charles" Red, 75, died on Thursday, Sept. 21, 2000 in Biloxi.
Mr. Red was born Nov. 24, 1924, in Newton County. He attended the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary from 1963 until 1966. He retired in 1987 as minister of music at the First Baptist Church of Long Beach after 17 years of service. He also served as interim music director for several churches on the Gulf Coast. He had been employed with Riemann Funeral Home since 1988.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ottis and Ovanda Red; a brother, Clayton Red; and a granddaughter, Christine Sinclair.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Alice Red of Pass Christian; two sons, David Red of Albuquerque, N.M., and Keith Red of Lakeland, Fla.; a daughter, Kathy Clements of Moultrie, Ga.; two sisters, Elvie Hammond of Rogersville, Ala., and Elmira Thompson of Clinton; and four grandchildren.

Mr. Shirley was the owner and operator of a grocery store and was a Baptist.

ESCATAWPA - Virgil A. Valentine, 87, died Saturday, Sept. 23, 2000, in Pascagoula.
Mr. Valentine was born Sept. 17, 1913, in Jasper County and was self-employed as a carpenter and cabinet maker. He was an Army veteran of World War II and was a member of Four Mile Creek Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dan and Laura Valentine, and two brothers, Roland Valentine and Lavell Valentine.
Survivors include his wife, Pearline Valentine of Escatawpa; four daughters, Iva Nell Vaughan of Wade, Sheri Holland of Escatawpa, Margaret Womble of Natchez and Martha Barrow of Hurley; two sisters, Janie Reeves and Ernestine Parker, both of Theodore, Ala., 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

BILOXI - James W. "Jim" Atkins, 71, of Biloxi, died Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999, in Biloxi.
Mr. Atkins was a native of Arcadia, La., and a longtime resident of the Coast. He was retired from the V.A. Hospital in Biloxi as head of the medical lab and had served in the Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a 32nd degree Mason, a member of the York Rite, Scottish Rite and a Shriner. He was a member of the Fellowship Lodge of Biloxi. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Biloxi where he served as a deacon and an usher.
Survivors include a sister, Mary Ann Roquemore of Santa Ana, Calif., and one niece and one nephew.
Visitation will be Monday, Nov. 8, 1999, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Riemann Memorial Funeral Home in Biloxi. The funeral service will be Tuesday, Nov. 9, at 10:45 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Biloxi where friends may call one hour prior to services. Burial will be in Biloxi National Cemetery with Masonic graveside services.

She was born in Lake Village, Arkansas, February 10, 1933. She was a retiree of K-Mart and a member of First Pentecostal Church of Biloxi for 32 years. She was an avid fisherman and traveler.
She was predeceased by her husband, Woodrow J. Gilbert Sr.

Mrs. Gasbarro was born May 8, 1909, in Benevento, Italy on May 8, 1909, and was a former resident of San Antonio, Texas. She formerly belonged to the St. Vincent De Paul, Sisters of Charity Order. She received a master's degree to become a registered nurse. She was a seamstress.

Mrs. Jurich was born Jan. 13, 1917, in Biloxi. She was employed as a waitress in Biloxi and for 35 years at Rosetti's PoBoys in Biloxi. She was a volunteer at Biloxi Regional Medical Center. She was a member of St. Michaels Catholic Church, the Slavonian Ladies Auxiliary and St. Michaels Altar Society.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter "Mutt" Jurich, Sr.; her parents, Frank and Mildred Barhonovich; a sister, Antonia Barhonovich; and three brothers, Anthony Barhonovich, John Barhonovich and Peter Barhonovich.
Survivors include three daughters, Betty Meyers, Marie Gombos, and Toni Briscoe; a son, Peter M. Jurich Jr. ; a brother, Frank J. Barhonovich; and seven grandchildren.

GULFPORT - Norman Kemmer, 56, of Gulfport, died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2000, in Ackerman, MS.
Mr. Kemmer was a native of Crossville, TN, and had been a resident of the Gulf Coast for 42 years. He was an Air Force veteran having served during the Vietnam era. He was of the Baptist faith. He was a brick mason. He was a member of the Wild Boar Conservation Association and the N.R.A.
He was preceded in death by his father, Charlie Kemmer.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Kemmer of Gulfport; two sons, Mitch Kemmer of Crossville, TN, and Marty Kemmer of Hattiesburg; his mother, Agnes Mitchell Kemmer of Crossville; a brother, Jack Kemmer of Crossville; and two grandchildren, Leko Kemmer and Dallas Kemmer, both of Crossville.

Robert Lyon Peel

LONG BEACH - Robert "Bob" Lyon Peel, 96, of Long Beach, MS, passed away on Friday, February 25, 2000.
Mr. Peel grew up in Waynesboro, MS, and had a long career with The Merchants Company in Gulfport, having moved to the Coast in 1942. He attended Mississippi State University for four years during which time he earned membership in the athletic "M" Club for his achievements on the baseball field under the coaching of "Dudy" Noble in the early 1920s. For numerous years following college, Peel enjoyed playing baseball for the Pirates, a semi-pro regional team from Waynesboro, and helped take them to the national playoffs in Wichita, Kansas in 1937. Later in life, he swapped the bat for golf clubs and excelled, including hitting two holes-in-one. Peel enjoyed 58 years of Christian fellowship at the First United Methodist Church of Gulfport, where he took pride in serving as President of and holding offices with the Men's Bible Class. He was devoted to family and enjoyed the excitement of visits from children and grandchildren.
Mr. Peel is survived by and will be sadly missed by his widow, Jessie Morton Peel, originally of Booneville, MS; one son, Robert David Peel of Chattanooga, TN; three daughters, Rebecca Peel Storey of Amherst, MA, Emily Peel Lynn of Killeen, TX, and Ellen Peel of Boca Raton, FL; six grandchildren, Phillip Moffat, Caroline Storey, Melanie Lynn Ringstaff, Brian Peel, Elizabeth Lynn, Courtney Lynn; and one great-granddaughter, Jessica Ringstaff. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Oscar and Mary Lyon Peel of Waynesboro, and four sisters, Katherine Bufkin, Virginia Kite, Frances McAlister, and Nell Wolfe.
Services will be conducted through Riemann's Funeral Home in Gulfport, 25th Ave., with visitation Tuesday 6-8 p.m. and Wednesday morning at 9:30-10:30 a.m. with services following at 11 a.m. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Gulfport. The Men's Bible Class will serve as honorary pallbearers. Pallbearers will be Philip Moffat, Brian Peel, Albert Storey, Sidney Bufkin, James Lynn, and Justin Ringstaff.

BILOXI - Edward Rug, 63, died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000, in Biloxi.
Mr. Rug was a native and lifelong resident of Biloxi. He was a member of St. John Catholic Church where he served as Eucharistic minister. He was a retired major with the Biloxi Police Department and was retired from the Mississippi State Bureau of Marine Resources. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 1244 in Biloxi where he served as Outside Guard and on the kitchen committee. He served with the Mississippi Army National Guard.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Ota Barras Rug.
Survivors include a daughter, Pam Leach of Ocean Springs; a son, Anthony "A.J." Rug of Biloxi, and three grandchildren.

Mr. Scott was a native of Minneapolis and had been a Biloxi resident since 1970. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a home builder and was owner/operator of Drywall Manufacturing and Supply until his retirement in 1969. He was a founding member and the first president of the "Coast to Coast" R.V. Club and a member of the Antique Auto and Engine Club.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Walter J. Scott.

BILOXI - Air Force Airman 1st Class Perry Matthew Stallings, 21, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000, in Shreveport, La.
Mr. Stallings was born in Ocean Springs and remained a lifelong resident of the Coast. He was a 1997 graduate of St. Martin High School where he was a drummer in the band. He was on active duty at Barksdale Air Force Base in Shreveport where he was a member of the Second Security Forces Squadron. He was a member of McClellan Road Baptist Church.
Survivors include his parents, Joel K. Stallings Sr. and Karen Reece Stallings of Biloxi; a sister, Katy Clinton of Valdosta, Ga.; a brother, Joel K. Stallings of Oxford, and his grandparents, Perry and Maisie Reece of Biloxi.

He was a carpenter and a boat builder. He built and was the captain of the Mr. John. He was a member of the Northside Assembly of God Church.
