BILOXI - Frank W. Burgess, Jr., 92, of Biloxi, died 2 September 2000, in Biloxi, after a short illness. Mr. Burgess was a lifelong resident of New Orleans, LA, and had been a resident of Biloxi since 1986. He was retired from the U.S. Postal Service where he served with the Railway Postal Service. Mr. Burgess was a recent resident of Loyalton of Biloxi where he was always referred to as Mr. Smiley by many of the residents and staff because of his always happy smile and disposition. Mr. Burgess was an avid fisherman and could be seen wade fishing along the Coast on many mornings with his friends. He was a member of the Mount Moriah-Quitman Lodge No. 59 F. & A.M. of New Orleans and served as past master in 1954. He was recognized for his 50 years of membership in July 1999 by the Grand Lodge of the state of Louisiana. He was also recognized for attaining the high honor of being a Scottish Rite Mason for fifty years in March of 2000. He was preceded in death by his wife of seventy-one years, Myrtle Schwartz Burgess. Survivors include a daughter, Marion R. Burgess; a son, Richard J. Burgess, Sr., and wife, Charleca; six grandchildren, Richard and Janet Burgess, Warren and Cynthia Ford, Christine and Mike Apple, Rene Mosley-Smith and Glen Smith, Juli Johnson, Leslie and David Beasley; six great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at Jacob Schoen & Son Funeral Home, 3827 Canal Street in New Orleans, LA, on Wednesday, October 4, 2000, at 1:45 p.m. Interment at Lake Lawn Park on Pontchartrain Blvd., New Orleans. Friends may visit on Wednesday from 11:45 a.m. until 1:45 p.m.

PASCAGOULA - Eugenie M. "Sis" Cooper, 87, died Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000, in Pascagoula. Mrs. Cooper was born Dec. 29, 1912, in Mobile and was a retired licensed practical nurse. She was a member of Our Lady of Victories Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph E. Cooper; her parents, Edward J. Murray Sr., and Eugenie Krebs Murray; a sister, Virgie Garati; and two brothers, Francis Murray and Ivan Murray. Survivors include a brother, E.J. Murray Jr. of Pascagoula. A service was held at 2:30 p.m. Monday at O'Bryant-O'Keefe Funeral Home in Pascagoula. Burial was in Krebs Cemetery in Pascagoula.

David Haskell Crockett

PASS CHRISTIAN - David Haskell Crockett, 77, died Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000, in Biloxi. Mr. Crockett was a native of Oxford and was a former resident of New Orleans. He was retired as a railroad conductor for Texas Pacific in New Orleans. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Crockett, and his parents, Durwood and Gladys Crockett. Survivors include his wife, Billie Crockett of Pass Christian; two sons, Thomas H. Crockett of Waveland and David F. Crockett of Slidell; a daughter, Beverly Crockett Simmons of Houston, Texas; a sister, Sarah Marion of Palo Alto, Calif., and four grandchildren. A service will be at 5 p.m. today at Riemann Funeral Home Chapel in Pass Christian where friends may call from 4 p.m. until service time.

BILOXI - Charles M. Davis, 86, died Sunday, Oct. 1, 2000, in Biloxi. Mr. Davis was a lifelong resident of Biloxi and was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church. He was a member of the Elks Lodge No. 606 where he served as house committee chairman for many years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Katie Davis. Survivors include a daughter, Mary Kay Hinton of Marietta, Ga.; a son, Charles Davis of the Latimer community, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A service will be at 10 a.m. today at St. Michael's Catholic Church where friends may call one hour before service time. Burial will be in Southern Memorial Park Cemetery. ESCATAWPA - Forrest "Cap" Dethloff, 73, died Monday, Oct. 2, 2000, in Moss Point. Mr. Dethloff was born Sept. 4, 1927, in Escatawpa and remained a lifelong resident. He was retired from International Paper Company and was a Navy veteran. He was a lifelong member of Escatawpa Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a son, Joe Dethloff; his parents, Capt. Frank and Lulu Dethloff; and four brothers, Frank Dethloff, Jesse Dethloff, Robert Dethloff and Albert Dethloff. Survivors include a brother, Gomez Dethloff of Orange Grove; three sisters, Louise Nelson and Doris Weeks, both of Escatawpa, and Dorothy Love of Moss Point, three grandchildren and a great-grandchild. A service will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Jackson County Funeral Services Chapel in Escatawpa where friends may call two hours before service time. Burial will be in Robertson Cemetery in Escatawpa.

BILOXI - Mrs. Scottie Estopinal, age 106, and a resident of Biloxi, MS, died Sunday, October 1, 2000, in Biloxi. Mrs. Estopinal was a native of Centreville, MS, and came to Gulfport, MS, in 1913, as a bride and was well-known for her charm and musical talent. She was supervisor of music and choral director for Gulfport city schools for many years. She served as organist and choir director at First Presbyterian Church in Gulfport for 30 years. Her greatest joy was to have people gather around the piano and sing while she played. She belonged to many organizations along the Coast. Mrs. Estopinal was preceded in death by her husband, William Estopinal; and her parents, James A. and Nettie A. Smylie. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Mary Gordon Guinn and James W. Guinn of Gulfport; a grandson, William Scott Guinn and his wife, Clara Sartor Guinn of Gulfport; a granddaughter, Jane Guinn Jones, and her husband, Robert Jones of Shreveport, LA; a great-grandson, Robert Montgomery Jones; and a niece, Vivian Blanchard of Shreveport. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight, October 3, at Riemann Funeral Home, 25th Avenue in Gulfport. GULFPORT - Carrie Panola Odell, 88, of Gulfport, died Sunday, October 1, 2000, in Salisbury, North Carolina. Panola "Nolie" Odell was born September 5, 1912. She was a lifelong resident of Gulfport and a retired United Gas Company employee. She was a member of the Gulfport United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her father, Samuel Murphy; her mother, Minnie Talbot Murphy; her husband, Walter W. Odell; three brothers, Lee, Clyde, and Vernon; and a sister, Virginia Murphy Anderson. Survivors include her niece, Lynn Anderson Denison of Salisbury, NC; her nephew Lee Clyde Anderson of Staten Island, NY; three great-nieces; and three great-nephews. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, October 4, 2000, at Riemann Funeral Home, 25th Avenue in Gulfport, where friends may call from 12 noon until service time. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Gulfport following the service.

BILOXI - Mr. William R. Platts, 92, died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000, in Port Huron, Mich. Mr. Platts was born Aug. 26, 1907, in McBain, Mich., and was a graduate of Ferris State University College of Pharmacy in Big Rapids, Mich. He was a pharmacist in the family drug store and had been a resident of Biloxi since the early 1960s. He was a member of the Masonic Order and was an amateur radio operator. He was preceded in death by his wife, Viola Platts. Survivors include a son, Wesley Platts of Biloxi, and a sister, Ruth Glencer of Port Sanilac, Mich. A graveside service was held Sept. 9 in the Port Sanilac Cemetery. Pomeroy Funeral Home in Croswell, Mich., was in charge of arrangements.

OCEAN SPRINGS - Mrs. Dorothy R. "Dottie" Jalanivich Sells, 72, died Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000, in Ocean Springs after a lengthy illness. Mrs. Sells was a lifelong resident of the community. She was a native of Biloxi and traveled extensively with her husband while he served in the military, including Japan and Iran. She enjoyed her grandchildren, playing games and working puzzles. She was a member of Faith Christian Center in Ocean Springs. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul E. Sells Sr.; her parents, John Matthew and Gertrude Eve Trosclair Jalanivich; and two brothers, John M. Jalanivich Jr. and David Warren Jalanivich. Survivors include two sons, Paul E. Sells Jr. of Crum Lynne, PA, and Johnny E. Sells of the Philippines; three sisters, Aline McGraw and Gertrude N. Medlock, both of Ocean Springs, and Alma Baker of Palatka, FL; two brothers, Wilbur "Bill" Emmanuel Jalanivich of Paradise, CA, and Dewey Preston Jalanivich of Mulberry, FL; four caregivers, Terry Waters, Jean Cooley, Sharon Casey and Amber Mangrum; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Tuesday, October 3, 2000, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Ocean Springs Chapel of Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Home. GULFPORT - Chester Glea Uber, 97, died Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000, in Gulfport. Mr. Uber was born in Smith County, Texas, and had been a resident of Gulfport since December 1976. He was a 24-year Navy veteran, serving in World War II and receiving the following awards: American Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and a Good Conduct Medal. A service will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the U.S. Naval Home Chapel in Gulfport with burial in Biloxi National Cemetery. Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Home in Gulfport is in charge of arrangements.

Clyde J. Van Arsdall Jr.

GULFPORT - Retired Navy Rear Admiral Clyde J. Van Arsdall Jr., 87, died Sunday, Oct. 1, 2000, in Gulfport. Admiral Van Arsdall was a native of Indianola and retired as a two-star admiral after 39 years of service in the Navy. He was a 1934 graduate of the Naval Academy and served in World War II. He served as the governor of the Naval Home in Philadelphia and the Naval Home in Gulfport. He served in the formation of the Southwest Mississippi Council of the Navy League and was a board member of the local Salvation Army. He was a member of the Gulfport Yacht Club and St. Mark's Episcopal Church. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Polly Ann Van Arsdall. Survivors include his wife, Jean Carter Van Arsdall of Gulfport; a daughter, Anne Van Arsdall of Albuquerque, N.M.; two sons, Clyde J. Van Arsdall III of Amarillo, Texas, and Robert Van Arsdall of Chapel Hill, N.C.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Gulfport where friends may call from 9:30 a.m. until service time. PEARL RIVER, La. - Mr. Arthur William "Art" Warden, 72, died Monday, Oct. 2, 2000, in Pearl River. Mr. Warden was a native of Picayune and was a mechanic with General Services Administration at NASA for 24 years. He was a member of Church of Christ in Bush, La., and was an Army veteran of the Korean conflict. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Mary Warden, and two sisters, Lula Miller and Hazel Minard. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Eva McKelvy; a brother, George W. McKelvy; and a sister, Sue Underwood. Survivors include her husband, L.L. "Doc" Bone of Biloxi; a son, Lyman L. GULFPORT - Mrs. Elizabeth Wendel Barry Johnson, age 100, and a resident of Gulfport, MS, died Monday, December 4, 2000, in Gulfport. Mrs. Johnson was a native of New Orleans, LA, and a resident of Gulfport for the past 38 years. She received degrees from Smith College in New York, Loyola in New Orleans, and the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg. Mrs. Johnson was a teacher and an accomplished pianist, and was a member of United Daughters of the Confederacy at Beauvoir in Biloxi, MS, and was a member of Handsboro Presbyterian Church in Gulfport. Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by a daughter, Kate J. Ellison; and a son, E. Barry Johnson. Survivors include a granddaughter, Eleanor Gourley of Birmingham, AL; and two great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Gourley of Beaufort, SC, and Paul Gourley III of Birmingham. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6, at Handsboro Presbyterian Church, where friends may call after 1 p.m. The family prefers memorials to Mississippi Special Olympics. He was a member of Temple Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Louise Long; two sons, Walter Earl Long and Charles C. Long; and his parents, William and Ivy Long. Survivors include two sons, Billy R. Long and Bobby L. Long, both of Big Point; three daughters, Melba Wright of Meridian, Betty S. Johnson of Movella and Judy A. Johnson of Deming, N.M.; a brother, J.M. Long of Waco, Texas; two sisters, Iva Mae Workman of South Carolina and Loraine Davis of Linville; 22 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Mr. Roberson was a native of McRae, Georgia, and a resident of the Coast for 30 years. Mr. Roberson retired after serving 28 years in the U.S. Air Force as a Senior Master Sgt. He also worked in Civil Service at Keesler Air Force Base in the education office as an education services specialist for 18 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Lee Roberson. Survivors include his wife, Della Roberson of Biloxi; a daughter, Faye Blackston and her husband, Lloyd of Biloxi; three sons, Lennie Roberson of Biloxi, David Roberson of Los Angeles, Calif., and Shawn Roberson of Biloxi; a sister, Vivian Strom of Phoenix City, Ala.; and a grandchild, Zachary Blackston of Biloxi.
