Ben Rankin Morris, retired president of the State-Record Co. and publisher of The State, and chairman of the board of Hardaway Concrete Company, died Wednesday. Mr. Morris, the son of Nancy Rankin and Theodore Page Morris, was born in Gastonia, N.C. on November 12, 1922. He had a 22-year career in the textile industry until 1970 when he joined the newspaper company as executive vice president. Two years later he was elected president, succeeding his late father-in-law, Ambrose G. Hampton, who retired at that time Under Mr. Morris' management, the State-Record Co. expanded its newspaper holdings and ventured into television. At one time the parent corporation had as many as eight subsidiaries in South Carolina, Mississippi, Texas and Virginia. In 1986, the privately held firm and its holdings were sold to the Knight-Ridder Corp. of Miami, Fla. He was named to the Knight-Ridder board of directors and remained head of the Columbia newspapers until his retirement in 1988. Mr. Morris became the principal figure in a statewide campaign to replace South Carolina's "brown-bagging" liquor laws with the sale of minibottles. Backers believed the new liquor law would increase tax revenues, lead to more moderation in drinking, bring in new hotels, motels and restaurants and benefit tourism. He also led drives to reduce public spending by statute. Mr. Morris served as president of the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce and was active in the Palmetto Business Forum. He served on numerous other state and local civic and business boards but found Providence Hospital's board service the most rewarding. He led a $1.5 million fund-raising campaign in 1979 to begin the hospital's extensive expansion. In his campaigns, Mr. Morris was proud that he studiously avoided trying to influence news decisions although, as a top representative of ownership, he was quick to voice his feelings about editorial decisions when he felt deeply about them. He was a staunch supporter of business and management positions, particularly on South Carolina's right-to-work law that prohibits union membership being a condition of employment. Mr. Morris left a prosperous textile machinery agency in Atlanta to run the newspapers as his father-in-law, publisher Ambrose G. Hampton, neared retirement age. Mr. Morris quickly learned the rudiments of the business and became popular with his employees. He often walked through the newspaper's plant, visiting various departments and calling many of the 400 employees by name. Of his tenure as the successful head of the company, Mr. Morris said his biggest disappointment - "Morris' Folly" - was the 1973 purchase of The Alexandria (Va.) Gazette, the oldest daily newspaper published in the United States." The Gazette was sold in 1979. But he was very proud of the 1973 purchase of the Myrtle Beach Sun-News, a tri-weekly that was quickly converted into a profitable daily. Mr. Morris spent a year at Belmont Abbey, N.C., and was graduated from N.C. State University with a textile engineering degree. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II as a B-25 flight engineer and top turret gunner. In 1946 Mr. Morris married Henriette Dargan Hampton of Raleigh, whom he had met at Pawley's Island when he was a college freshman. Mr. Morris worked for Textiles, Inc. in Gastonia, where his father, the late Theodore Page "Red" Morris, was a senior executive. In 1950 he joined Aldrich Machine Works and moved to Atlanta as its representative to cover Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee. He was a vice president and director of that company when he moved to Columbia. He was appointed by Gov. John C. West to the S.C. Commission on Human Affairs, and was a member of the Greater Columbia Community Relations Council. He served on the executive committee and board of the S.C. Safety Council, and was a member of the board of Allen University. He was also on the boards of trustees of the Richland County Public Library, the Richland County Historic Preservation Society, Junior Achievement and the Aurora Center of the Blind. He was known as the father of the South Carolina Business Hall of Fame and was elected a laureate in 1990. Mr. Morris was a founder and president of the Summit Club. He was also a member of Forest Lake Club, the Palmetto Club, the Columbia Ball, the Cotillion and the Piedmont Driving Club and the Capital City Club both in Atlanta. He received honorary degrees from Belmont Abbey and North Carolina State University. Surviving are his widow, Henriette Dargan Hampton Morris; three sons, Ben Rankin Morris Jr., of California, Md., Wade Hampton Morris of Atlanta, Ga., and Frank Page Morris of Columbia; one daughter, Henriette Dargan Morris Williams of Raleigh, N.C.; one brother, Albert Richard Morris; and 10 grandchildren. The service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Trinity Cathedral, Columbia. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the home, 132 Old Mill Circle, Columbia, SC. Memorials may be made to Providence Hospital, Columbia or Trinity Episcopal Cathedral.
