Andrew W. Brown formerly of Ebenezer, 91, died April 13, 2004 at Texas and Michael Brown of Ebenezer; one daughter, Andrea “Kitty” Forbes of Millington, Ohio, Fannie Hollowell of Tennessee, Lois Herring and Mary Elizabeth Sward, both of Jackson; and three grandchildren.
Pallbearers were: J.B. Herring, Paul Hollowell, Jeffrey Brown, Bubba Spell, Melvin Spell, and Wilburn White.
Dollie Russell Winston
Died: Sunday, April 11, 2004
Age: 92
Dollie Russell Winston of Tchula, 92, died Sunday, April 11, 2004.
Services were Saturday, April 17 at 12:00 noon at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Tchula with burial in Clifton Cemetery. Rev. J.B. Brown officiated.
Mrs. Winston was born October 13, 1911 in Holmes County, Lexington, to the late Riley and Mary Love Russell. She was a member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church where she served as a soloist, choir member and tribe leader. Her husband, Calvin Winston, preceded her in death.
Survivors include: one brother, Rev. Jesse J. Russell of Tchula; one special nephew (caretaker), Melvin Russell of Tchula; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Odell Hampton, Jr.
Died: Monday, April 05, 2004
Age: 64
Odell Hampton, Jr. of Lexington, 64, died Monday, April 5 at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson. Services were Thursday, April 8, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at Porter’s Funeral Home Chapel in Lexington with burial in Green lawn Cemetery in Lexington. Elder Leslie Benson officiated.
Mr. Hampton, Jr. was born January 10, 1940 in Holmes County. He was the second child of twelve children born to the late Mr. and Mrs. Odell Hampton, Sr. He received his education at Tchula Attendance Center. He furthered his studies at Tennessee and Melpha Ross of Southaven; nine siblings, Curtis and Charles both of Tchula, Nealy of Meridian, Lorine Garnett of Chicago, Illinois, James of Country Club Hills, Illinois, Kenny of Memphis, Iowa; and 9 grandchildren.
Eloise Dickerson Hester
Died: Friday, August 08, 2003
Age: 76
Eloise Dickerson Hester, 76, of Sallis died Friday, August 8, 2003 at her residence of heart failure. Services were Sunday, August 10 at 3:00 p.m. at Sallis Baptist Church with burial in the Sallis Cemetery. Rev. Thomas Wicker and Rev. James Burrell officiated.
Mrs. Hester was the daughter of the late W.D. Dickerson and Fallie Mae Keen. She attended Mississippi. She was retired from the U.S. Civil Service Commission, Choctaw Indian School and was also an accomplished artist. When Mrs. Hester was active she was a member of: Allison Wells Art Colony, Mississippi Regional Medical Center in McComb. Services were held Saturday, August 9 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Lexington with burial in Odd Fellows Cemetery. Bro. Blain McLain and Bro. Mike O’Brien officiated.
Mr. O’Kelley was born April 19, 1924 in Benton County to J.W. O’Kelley, Sr. and Janie Elliott. He was a World War II veteran serving as a Radioman, Third Class Petty Officer in the U.S. Navy. He was part of the armed guard crew aboard several Liberty ships in both the Atlantic and Pacific theatres. He was also a letter carrier for the Lexington Post Office for 25 years until retirement in 1989. His hobbies included hunting and fishing, especially with his grandson. He enjoyed gardening, playing the guitar, and was a regular at the local coffee club. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Lexington where he attended the Nathan Aldridge Sunday School Class.
Survivors include: wife, Rachel Rodgers O’Kelley of Lexington; a son, John William O’Kelley, III of Atlanta, GA; daughters, Carol O’Kelley Chandler of Madison, Judy O’Kelley Davis of Kosciusko; a brother, Jack R. O’Kelley of Bartlett, Iowa died Thursday, July 31, 2003. Services were held Friday, August 8, 2003 at 1:00 p.m. at Union Missionary Baptist Church in Waterloo, Mississippi and lived in Pickens, MS. He was the eleventh child of Ceasar and Dinnia Simpson. He started his formal education at Union Elementary School in Pickens, MS and was educated at home.
On September 26, 1943, Willie was united in matrimony with Mary Jane Young. This year they looked forward to celebrating their 60th anniversary. He moved to Waterloo, Indianapolis, Iowa, Florine Cochran of Denver, Colorado, Barbara Epps of Minneapolis, Minne-sota, Jeannette Ellison of Atlanta, Louisiana, and Lela Simpson of Nashville, Arizona and Dennis Simpson of Denver, Colorado; 27 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Active pallbearers were his grand-sons. Honorary pallbearers were his sons-in-laws
Ruth Margaret Fincher Reid
Died: Wednesday, July 30, 2003
Age: 87
Ruth Margaret Fincher Reid, 87, of Lexington died Wednesday, July 30, 2003 at University Hospital in Lexington. Services were Saturday, August 2, 2003 at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Lexington with burial in Odd Fellows Cemetery. Rev. Skipper Maxwell and Rev. David McIntosh officiated.
Mrs. Reid was the daughter of the late William H. Fincher and Lillie Howell. She was a retired city and county employee. She was a member of First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include: a son, Stephen Mills Reid of Aledo, Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. Services were at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 27, 2003 at First United Methodist Church in Lexington with burial in Oakland Cemetery in Oakland. Southern Funeral Home of Lexington was in charge of the ar-rangements. Rev. Skipper Maxwell and Bro. Mike O’Brien officiated.
Jim was a 1974 graduate of Central Holmes Academy and a 1976 graduate of Holmes Junior College. Jim retired as Fire Chief from the city of Lexington in 2002. He was an avid motorcyclist and constant reader. He was also well versed in all phases of computer technology. Jim was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Lexington.
Mr. Hughes is survived by his mother, Pauline Hughes of Lexington; sister, Rachael Turri of Memphis, Florida; fiancée Debra Brown of Lexington; and nieces and nephews.
Active pallbearers were: Bubber Carnathan, Dudley Farmer, Bro. Mike O’Brien, Derek Hodges, Len Ware, Jr. and Jessie Joiner.
Honorary pallbearers were: Lexington Volunteer Fire Department, Lexington Police Department, Doug Aldridge, and Bob Gilfoy.
Jean Waugh Salley
Died: Thursday, July 24, 2003
Age: 69
Jean W. Salley, 69, of Cleveland, died Thursday, July 24, 2003 at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson. Funeral services were Saturday, July 26, 2003 at 2 p.m. at Ray Funeral Home with Rev. John Chouccoli, Jr. officiating. Burial followed in New Cleveland Cemetery.
Mrs. Salley was born to Curtis and Ivy Waugh. She married Paul Clinton Salley on August 14, 1948 in Grenada. She and her husband moved to Cleveland in 1953. She was a seamstress for 46 years and was a member of Yale Street Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Clinton Salley; her son, Larry D. Salley; and her parents, Curtis and Ivy Waugh.
Survivors include two daughters, Paula S. Williams of Cleveland and Amber S. Rosamond of Lexington; a brother, J.L. Waugh of Duck Hill; a sister, Marie Wilson of Canton; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were David Williams, Kevin Williams, Jason Alford, Mike Rosamond, Bear Rosamond, Charles Weeks, Steve Wilson and Gary Waugh.
Honorary pallbearers were Jay Broadwater, Billy Wilson, Randy Wilson and Mike Wilson.
Memorials may be made to the Yale Street Baptist Church or the Baptist Children’s Village.
