Louis Clayton Engle
Died: Sunday, January 05, 2003
Age: 90

Louis Clayton Engle, 90, a retiree of the City of Durant Street Dept. died Sunday, January 5, 2003, at U.M.C. of Holmes County in Lexington. Services were Wednesday, January 8 at the Church of Nazarene of Durant with burial in Mizpah Cemetery. Rev. James Gates officiated.

Mr. Engle a longtime resident of Durant. He was retired after working many years for the City of Durant.

Survivors include: two daughters, Betty Jean Walker of San Angelo, Louisiana; one daughter, Renee G. Taylor of Lexington; and 6 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leslie B. Gilliland, Jr.

Active pallbearers were: Cris Clark, Cliff Autry, Johnnie Aldridge, Brandon Carver, Wayne Harlow, Quint Carver, Brian Carver, and Danny Milner.

Memorials may be made to: Grenada Honduras Mission Fund, P.O. Box 1236, Grenada, MS 38901.

John H. Williams
Died: Thursday, January 02, 2003

John H. Williams of Goodman, 78, a farmer, died of heart failure Thursday, January 2, 2003, at the G.V. "Sonny" Montgomery Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Jackson. Services were Saturday, January 11 at Goodman Baptist Church with burial in Hillcrest Cemetery. Century Hairston Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Rubye Griffin Robinson
Died: Monday, December 30, 2002
Age: 90

RUBYE G. ROBINSON

Rubye Griffin Robinson, 90, of Lexington, died on December 30, 2002 at her home at 15870 Highway 17 South, Lexington. Services were Saturday, January 4, 2003 at Gages Spring Missionary Baptist Church in Durant, with burial in Green lawn Cemetery in Lexington. Rev. W.T. Smith officiated.

Mrs. Robinson was the daughter of the late Rev. Robert W. and Pearl Cobbin Griffin. She was a retired teacher and a member of the Gages Spring M.B. Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, five brothers, and two sisters.

Survivors include: one son, Michael (Bobbie) Robinson, of Lexington; one daughter, Audrey Robinson, of Chicago, IL; one brother, Robert Lincoln (Willie) Griffin of Chicago, IL; four sisters, Mrs. Blanche G. Walker of Lexington, Mrs. Ozzie G. Horton of Durant, Mrs. Estell G. Helm of Ebenezer, and Mrs. Pastell Keith of Chicago, IL; 5 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Active pallbearers were: Sylvester Horton, Armstrong Walker, Clarence Helm, Alvin Helm, Robert Griffin, Jr., Antoine Helm, and Charles Walker.

Charles Robert Walker
Died: Wednesday, December 25, 2002
Age: 33

Chares Robert "Chuck" Walker, age 33, and a resident of Gulfport, died Wednesday, December 25, 2002, in Gulfport.

Mr. Walker was a native and lifelong resident of Gulfport. He was a Methodist, and worked as a salesman for several car dealerships on the coast.

Mr. Walker was preceded in death by his father, Knox W. Walker; and a brother, Norman Walker. Survivors include his wife, Michelle Walker; a son, Charles Robert "Chuckie" Walker II; a daughter, Alicia Walker; his mother, Shirley Walker, all of Saucier; a brother, Bill Walker, of Lexington; and a sister, Sandra Weilacher, of Palestine, Illinois and united with the Providence Baptist Church, where she was an active and faithful member. Later, in 1979 she relocated to Durant. She reunited with Belmount Missionary Baptist Church and became a member of all the auxiliaries in the church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters; Leora Booker, Viola Robinson, Maggie Williams, Melvina Bailey and one brother, Joe Bailey, Jr.

Survivors include: two nieces, Hattie Ellis of Durant and Lillie Mae Patterson of Rockford, Florida; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great grandchildren.

Active pallbearers were: Aubrey Johnson, Jr., Shane Johnson, Dale Johnson, Jerry Farmer, Billy Farmer, and Albert Merriweather.

Lorrie A. Sutton
Died: Thursday, October 24, 2002
Age: 38

Lorrie A. Sutton, 38, of West died Thursday, October 24, 2002. Services were held Sunday, October 27 at Southern Funeral Home Chapel in Durant with burial in Brister Cemetery. Rev. James Culpepper officiated. Southern Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Sutton was the daughter of Carroll Sutton and Florence Laughety Sutton. She was a store manager and a member of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church.

Survivors include: parents, Carroll and Florence Sutton of West; one daugher, Emily Green of Winona; two sisters, Angie Burrell of West and Jo Sutton McBride of Durant; one brother, Randy Sutton of West; one grandchild; and grandmother, Fern Tate of Vaiden.

Active pallbearers were: Allen McCrory, Sonny McCrory, Rufus Waddell, Eli Saxton, Wayne Tate, and Todd Watson.

Connie McLellan Moorhead
Died: Thursday, October 24, 2002
Age: 81

Connie McLellan Moorhead, 81, a retiree of Henson Kickernick, died Thursday, October 24, 2002, at Clinton Health & Rehabilitation Center in Clinton. Graveside services were 2:30 p.m. Saturday, October 26 at Natchez Trace Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. Johnny Sanders officiating. Southern Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Moorhead was born on November 20, 1920 in Holmes County, and was a member of Stone of Ridgeland; one sister, Elizabeth Evans of Ocean Springs; 1 grandson, and 3 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Mississippi United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Charlotte Cobb Welch of Amory; mother, Beatrice Lokey Welch of Pontotoc; one son, Ronald Lee Welch of Eupora; one daughter, Scarlet Renee Elkin of Columbus; and 2 grandchildren.

Serving as active pallbearers were: Paul Morrow, Tom Crook, Dewey Hannon, Eulon Summerford, Joe Sugg, C.D. Leech, Mitchell Wheeler, Reggie Johnson. Honorary pallbearers were United Methodist Church Ministers.

Memorials may be given to American Heart Association, P.O. Box 299, Amory, MS 38821.

Gladys Bowen
Died: Wednesday, October 16, 2002
Age: 90

Gladys Bowen, 90, a homemaker of Madison, died from heart failure Wednesday, October 16, 2002 at Bond Nursing Home. Services were Friday, October 18, 2002 at Canton Funeral Home with burial in Concord Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Pickens. Rev. David Upshaw officiated.

Mrs. Bowen was the daughter of the late W.H. Hawkins and Isabel Craft. She was a member of the Pickens Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, John Paul Bowen of Canton and Jimmy Bowen of Raleigh; one brother, V.T. Hawkins of Madison; two grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

Eula Mae Hampton
Died: Sunday, October 13, 2002
Age: 67

Eula Mae Hampton, 67, a retired postal worker, of Chicago, Alabama. She moved to Chicago, Illinois in 1955. In 1967 she began the first of twenty-five years of employment at the United States Postal Service until she retired in 1992.

Survivors include her husband, King Hampton; four children, Michelle Bivins, Stephanie Jackson, Wade Hampton, and Rosalind Hampton; six sisters, Hermie, Ethel, Ptoshia, Geraldine, Zawartha and Dawatha; one brother, Robert Triplett; 10 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
