MILTON ARTHUR THORNTON
Died: Wednesday, February 22, 2006
Age: 82

Funeral services for Milton Arthur Thornton of Tchula were held at 12 noon Wednesday, February 22, 2006, at Southern Funeral Home in Lexington, with interment in Pinecrest Cemetery in Tchula. Mr. Thornton, 82, died at home on February 20 after a battle with cancer. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Tchula. Rev. Larry Edwards officiated the services.

Mr. Thornton was a retired farmer and mechanic. He was born on January 8, 1924, in Edinburg, MS, to Robert Arthur and Lottie Lee Malone Thornton. After serving 5 years in the Army in World War II, he moved to Belzoni, MS, and started his family. In 1959, Mr. Thornton moved with his family to Tchula to manage Omega Plantation for the late J. E. Cunningham. Later, he farmed cotton on his own. After retirement, Mr. Thornton was known for his raising of peacocks and Jack Russell terriers.

He is preceded in death by three sons, Milton, Jr., Stan, and Johnny Thornton; two brothers, Almond Thornton of Belzoni and Harold Thornton of Brandon; and two sisters, Mildred Jones of Belzoni and Inez Willoughby of Jackson.

He is survived by two sons, Billy Thornton of Clinton and Steve Thornton of Bush, LA; four daughters, Linda Scarborough of Green ville, Marsha Burns of Kosciusko, Vickie Andrews of Tchula, and Miriam Watkins of West; three brothers, Raymond Thornton of Laurel, Hollis Thornton of Carthage, and Leroy Thornton of Tchula; 17 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren..

Serving as pallbearers were grandsons: Jim Andrews, Jr., Ben Burns, Jeff White, Greg Watkins, Jr., Ryan Thornton, and Will Watkins.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to French Camp Academy and the American Cancer Society.

Norman Doty Porter
Died: Monday, February 20, 2006
Age: 86

NORMAN DOTY PORTER

Mr. Norman Doty Porter, 86, died Monday, February 20, 2006 in Golden Age Nursing Home in Green wood, MS. Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 23, 2006 at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Lexington with burial in Odd Fellows Cemetery. Southern Funeral Home of Lexington is in charge of arrangements.

Doty was born January 4, 1920 in Lexington, the son of Sally Doty and Alfred Allen Porter, Sr. He was an Army veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was awarded the Soldier's Medal during World War II for saving the life of his commanding officer. He was the accountant and office manager for 32 years for the Hammett Companies. Doty was a 50 year member of the Lexington Masonic Lodge and a member of the Green wood Elks Lodge. He was a longtime faithful member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Lexington.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years Jean McGraw Porter of Green wood, two sons and daughters-in-law Alfred (Al) and Rhonda Porter of Louisville and John Doty and Gale Porter of Green wood; 5 grandchildren, Doty and Mary Gregory Porter of Green wood, Sloane Porter of Green wood, Sally, Mary Claire and Olivia Porter of Louisville.

Audrey Cheatham
Died: Sunday, February 19, 2006
Age: 84

AUDREY L. CHEATHAM

Audrey L. Cheatham of Belzoni, retired phone operator, 84, died Sunday, February 19, 2006 at Humphreys County Memorial Hospital in Belzoni. Services were held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, February 21 at Mortimer Funeral Home in Belzoni with burial in Indianola City Cemetery. Rev. Curtis Ragland officiated.

She was a Baptist and was preceded in death by her husband, Van Dorn Cheatham, Jr., and one son, Larry Abel.

Survivors include, daughters Ouida Hawkins of Belzoni and Harriet Roberson; son, Harry Cheatham of Cleburne, Texas passed away February 11, 2006, in Dallas, Mississippi to Guy and Wilhelmina (Deavenport) Lowe. She married Rufus Nixon Helm. Mrs. Helm taught school in Texas for 38 years until her retirement in 1985. She was a member of the Methodist Church in Tomball, Texas and Nick Helm and wife, Karen of Plano, TX; eight sisters, Ida Boykin and Peggy Coleman, both of Green ville, Stella Garrison of Green wood, Grace Sanders of Columbus, Shirley Sewell of Minter City, Sue Allen of Green ville, SC, Charlene Fox of Florida. Funeral service was held on Saturday, February 11, 2006 at Ebenezer Methodist Church, with burial in the church cemetery. Rev. Skipper Maxwell officiated. Southern Funeral Home of Lexington was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hollowell was born on July 8, 1920 in Ebenezer to Thomas Jefferson Brown and Annie Mae Ward Brown. She was a homemaker and member of the Methodist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Paul C. Hollowell of Venice, California; a daughter, Dr. Cherrie Brown of Vacaville, Tennessee, and Ann Billian of Dayton, Mississippi State University and taught there for seven years. He retired from the Army Missile Command as deputy finance and accounting officer in September 1997. Mr. Williams was preceded in death by his parents and one grandson, Jerod McLellan.

He is survived by his loving wife, Peggy Majure Williams; two daughters, Gina Lynn Williams of Birmingham and Marlee Golden of Green wood; one grandchild, Maggie McLellan of Green wood; and one brother-in-law, Niles Major and his wife, Kay, of Neptune Beach, Fla.

Pallbearers were Frank Smith, Frank DeButy, Lee Johnson, Bennett McRay, Arbin Brisco and Jim O'Hara.

In lieu of flowers, the family requested memorial donations be made to Hospice of the Valley or to the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Obie Boyd
Died: Monday, March 13, 2006
Age: 83

Obie Boyd passed away Monday, March 13th at 2 p.m. He was 83 years old. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Porter & Sons Chapel, 237 Yazoo Street, Lexington. Viewing is Friday, March 17th from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m., also held at Porter & Sons Chapel.

He is survived by his wife Mary; sons, Lawrence, Obie Jr., Willie, Charles, and Jimmy; daughters, Mary, Mildred and Marie; three sisters, Pearl, Ruth and Amanda; two brothers, Charles and Bennie; and a host of grandchildren and other family members.

Obie and Mary's reunion lasted 60 years.and Elsie Honaker Bolling. She was a retired factory worker.

She is survived by three sons, Bobby Armstrong and Jerry Armstrong of Bristol, TN, and Tom Armstrong of Princeton, WV; daughters, Nancy Disher of Channelview, Stone Ainsworth. Rev. Ainsworth graduated from Zama High School. He attended East Central Community College and received his AA degree. He graduated from Delta State University with a BS in chemistry. Postgraduate degrees were earned from MSU, a master's degree in counseling and educational specialist.

Before surrendering to the ministry in 1974, Rev. Ainsworth taught chemistry and coached girls basketball in Coxburg, Riverside and Sebastapol school systems. He had retired from the Vocational Rehabilitation for the Blind. He pastored in Amite, Copiah, Carroll, Holmes, Calhoun, Attala and Yazoo counties. He was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church.

Rev. Ainsworth was very family oriented. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the joy of his life. He was an avid MSU and DSU fan.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Helen "Wink" Ainsworth; son, Danny Ainsworth and his wife Dianna of Madison; daughters, Debbie Anding and husband Grafton of Vicksburg, and Cherie Ricks and husband Tommy of Crystal Springs; brother, Tommie Ainsworth of Green wood; and sisters, Sue Provenza of Green ville, Rebecca Stovall of Yazoo City, and Syble Adams of Tupelo; 6 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Grafton Anding, Brian Anding, Randy Yates, Scott Malpass, Thomas Ricks, and Tommy Ricks.

Honorary pallbearer was Cade Ainsworth.
