Leslie H. "Les" Ables
Died: Tuesday, December 09, 2003
Age: 65
Leslie H. “Les” Ables of Odenville, Alabama; four sons, Jeffery Harold Ables of Ashville, Alabama; one daughter, Susan Reeder of Oneonta, Mississippi philanthropist and education advocate, Sally McDonnell Barksdale, has died in Jackson, Mississippi, where she graduated from Hazlehurst High School in 1961. She was the drum majorette in the marching band, and president of the student body. Sally Barksdale received her Bachelor of Science in Business degree from the University of Tennessee, where her husband became an executive at FedEx. While in Memphis, Sally was President of the Episcopal Church Women of the diocese of Western Ten-nessee. She was also active in Holy Communion Episcopal Church and supported St. Mary’s School for Girls.
In 1992 the family relocated to Seattle, after Jim took an executive position with McCaw Cellular. While in Seattle, Sally served on the board of the Parent’s Club for the Lakeside School, where her son, David, attended high school.
During the technology boom of the 1990s, the Barksdales lived in Palo Alto, Mississippi in 1999. Although Mississippi that their perspectives and efforts could address. The Barksdales determined to help provide educational opportunities in Mississippi children in the third grade and below. It remains the largest pri-vate gift to early childhood literacy in this nation’s history.
Among other philanthropic gifts, they also established the McDonnell-Barksdale Honors College endowment at The University of Mississippi Medical Center full medical scholarships for African American students.
Sally’s other activities and accom-plishments include memberships on the boards of The University of Mississippi Humanitarian Award; the Friends of Education Award by the New York City. She also maintained close ties to her sister Mary Sue McDonnell Mitchell and Her husband Don’s family in Jackson, as well as her brother, Fred McDonnell and his wife Barbara’s family in Hazlehurst. She also loved deeply an unbroken circle of close friends, in-laws, nephews and nieces.

Hazel Russel Case
Died: Sunday, December 07, 2003
Age: 68
Hazel Russel Case of Madison, 68, died Sunday, December 7, 2003, at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center for 14 years.
She is survived by her husband, Paul Case; her twin sister, Hilda Wheeler; daughters, Madelyn Salemo and Connie Morrow; sons, Charles Case and Paul Case, Jr.; grandsons, Adam Rosen, Cameron Stubbs, and Casey Stubbs; granddaughters, Ondrea Rosen and Ava Case. She is preceded in death by her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Russel; six brothers and six sisters.

Charles Leonard Burleson
Died: Saturday, December 06, 2003
Age: 71
Charles Leonard Burleson of Green wood, 71, died Saturday, December 6, 2003 at his residence of heart failure. Services were Wednesday, December 10, 2003 at 3 p.m. at Williams and Lord Chapel in Green wood with military rites at the Odd Fellows Cemetery by Green wood American Legion Post #29. Dr. Jim Phillips officiated.
Mr. Burleson was born in Phillip and resided in Green wood for the last 30 years. He graduated from Green wood High School in 1952 and also graduated from Mississippi where he was a member of the Rebel Football team that played in the 1953 Sugar Bowl. After 20 years Mr. Burleson retired from the City of Green wood – Waste Water Treatment Plant and ran the Burleson River Fish Market. He also served 21 years in the U.S. Air Force and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a member of First Green wood Christian Church and The Odd Fellows Lodge.
Survivors include: wife, Joy Wright Burleson of Green wood; two sons, John Burleson of Olive Branch and Charles (Chuck) Burleson, Jr. of Valdosta, North Dakota, and Carol Horton of Stockbridge, Texas; two daughters, Tammy McAdams of McAdams and Mary Jobe of Durant; four brothers, Clarence Saxton of Las Vegas, Arizona, and John Pounders of Beggs, Alabama and Robert L. Thweatt of Lexington; one sister, Joyce Almond of Green ville.
Jessie Kimbrough Bradford
Died: Wednesday, September 10, 2003
Age: 85
Jessie Kimbrough Bradford, 85, of Jackson died Wednesday, September 10, 2003. Services were Monday, September 22 at 1:00 p.m. at Hope Spring Baptist Church in Jackson. Rev. Walter L. Johnson, Jr., officiated.
Mrs. Bradford Jr., in 1940. Three sisters preceded her in death Dannerine, Mabelene, and Augustine.
Mrs. Bradford of Denver, Colorado and Roland Michigan died Tuesday, September 2, 2003. Services were Saturday, September 6, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Ecorse in Ecorse, Mississippi.
She received her education in Lexington, Michigan to seek employment where she met and married Marion Simpson. To this union a son was born Nathan Simpson, both her son and husband preceded her in death.
In 1954, she and her family moved to Southwest Detroit and she transferred her membership to the First Baptist Church. She was on the usher board for thirty-one years and was also a member of the Missionary Society.
Survivors include: a brother, Albert Harris of Chicago, Illinois; adopted daughters, Earline Deering of Lexington, Wisconsin died Tuesday August 26, 2003. Services were Wednesday, September 3, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. at Mount Moriah Baptist Church in Milwaukee, Wisconsin Memorial Park in Brookfield, Mississippi. She attended the Elementary and High Schools of Lexington. She was a member of Epworth Methodist Church until she moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She was a member of Gama Phi Delta Sorority, a lifetime member of the NAACP. She served on the Board of Directors of the Capitol Court Shopping Center, and as president of the 24th Place Block Club.
Survivors include: a husband, Petro Langdon; two sons, Albert III and Michael Pitchford; a daughter, Valerie Benton-Davis; four sisters, Francis Jackson of Waterloo, Illinois, Jeanette Johnson and Mable Rule of Lexington, Mississippi; 3 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were: Lenard Pitchford, III, Michael Pitchford, Lenard Simpson, Leonard Davis, Eugene Pitchford, and Isaac Harper, Jr.
