Leslie Mae Patterson
Died: Friday, December 19, 2003
Age: 66
Lessie Mae Patterson of Durant, 66, died from a brain stroke on Friday, December 19, 2003 at the Baptist Hospital in Jackson. Services were Tuesday, December 23, 2003 at Liberty Hill A.M.E. Zion Church in Durant. Winters Funeral Home of Kosciusko handled the arrangements.
Mrs. Patterson was the third daughter of the late Ben and Eartha Elmore of Attala County. She was a homemaker and a member of Liberty Hill Church where she served as an usher, class leader, and a deaconess.
Survivors include: husband, Leotha Patterson of Durant; five daughters, Miss Frances Patterson, Miss Mary Alice Patterson, Mrs. Lendora Harmon all of Durant, Mrs. Geraldine Anderson of Goodman, Mrs. Mae Pearl Shavers of Lexington; three sons, Earnest Patterson of Chicago, Illinois; two brothers, J.C. Elmore of Kosciusko and Donnie Elmore of West; eleven grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.
Nan Ella McGee
Died: Monday, December 15, 2003
Age: 92
Nan Ella McGee of Goodman, 92, died Monday, December 15, 2003 at the University Hospital in Lexington. Services were Saturday, December 20, 2003 at the Goodman Baptist Church at 1:00 p.m. Porter and Sons Funeral Home in Lexington handled the arrangements.
Mrs. McGee was born to the late Mr. James and Mrs. Tommie Sanders in Goodman. Her first job was in the bookstore at Holmes Junior College before she moved to Sharad where she was employed in a commissary store.
Before World War II began, she and her husband moved to Clarksdale where she was employed in an ammunition factory. After her husband, Fulton, was drafted she moved to Oakland, Mississippi College and after four years she earned an Education Degree in 1949. She then attended Saints Junior College in Lexington earning an Arts and Crafts degree. She also received additional educational credits and even served as an insurance writer for the American Sons and Daughters in Yazoo City.
Mrs. McGee served on the Board of Alderman in Goodman as Police Commissioner. While serving on the board, she participated in the establishment of a senior feeding program and the rehabbing of the homes of senior citizens.
Until her death she remained a Deputy Sheriff in Holmes County. She was a member of Goodman Court of the Heroines of Jericho and served as the Senior Attendant to the Court.
Survivors include: two brothers, David Cowan Sanders of Jackson and Wallace Butler Sanders of Richland, Missouri, Tommie Maude Cooper of Joliet, New York, and Arsia V. Smith of Gary, Mississippi.
A native of Metairie, Louisiana; sisters, Jan Ritchey of Jackson, Martha Tucker of Metairie, Susan Crawley of Harahan, Mississippi Baptist Medical Center. A memorial service was at 2 p.m. Monday, November 3, 2003 at the Orchard in Ridgeland. Wright & Ferguson Funeral home on High Street in Jackson handled the arrangements.
He was a native of Pickens and a civil engineering graduate of Ole Miss in 1936. His engineering practice extended over a period of 50 years which included three years as an officer in the Navy Seebees in the Pacific during World War II. Soon after the war he became very active in the Ohio and son, Thomas Britton (Britt) Maxwell of Jackson. There are also four grandchildren; and sister Ruth Minor of Macon.

Frances Gillon Carroll
Died: Wednesday, October 29, 2003
Age: 89
Mrs. Frances Carroll, 89, of Lexington died Wednesday, October 29, 2003 at her residence. Services were Friday, October 31, 2003 at 2 p.m. at Southern Funeral Home Chapel in Lexington with burial in Odd Fellows Cemetery. Rev. Gus Merritt and Rev. Blain McLain officiated.
Mrs. Carroll was the daughter of the late F.E. Gillon and Hattie James. She was a homemaker, and a member of the First Baptist Church in Lexington.
She was preceded in death by her husband, A. P. Carroll, and son, James A. Carroll.
Mrs. Carroll is survived by a son William Carroll of Lexington and 4 grandchildren.
Pallbearers were: Billy Martin, Harold Hammett, Jr., Pat Barrett, Jr., Bill Barrett, Watt Ervin, and Mark Haven.
Dorothy Pearce Brett
Died: Saturday, October 25, 2003
Age: 85
Dorothy Pearce Brett, 85, of Lexington died Saturday, October 25, 2003 at her residence. Services were Monday, October 27 at 10:00 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Lexington with burial in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Green wood. Rev. Skipper Maxwell and Dr. Mike O’Brien officiated.
Mrs. Brett was the daughter of the late Clarence A. Pearce, Sr., and Kathleen Franklin. She was a retired employee of Staplcotn.
Survivors include: one son, Danny Brett of Lexington; a sister, Mary Ann Taylor of Norfolk, Virginia; a brother, Clarence A. Pearce, Jr., of Green field, Texas, and Niki Rodgers of Bentonia; mother Barbara Ellis of Port Gibson; two sisters, Kareemie Nelson of Port Gibson, Barbara Williams of Clinton; and 2 grandchildren.
Active pallbearers were: Marshall Jones, Matthew Cader, Marshall Cader, James Williams, Eddie Alias, Jr., Mark Cader, Michael Cader, John Burks Williams, Thomas Gordon, Jr., and Henry Lee Seymore.
William Allen Abel
Died: Friday, March 05, 2004
Age: 65
William Allen Abel of Kinston, North Carolina. Graveside services were Wednesday, March 10 at 2 p.m. at Harlands Creek Cemetery in Lexington. Bro. Gage Hynum officiated.
Mr. Abel was born in Holmes County to John Alvin Abel and Evie Ables Abel. He was the owner and operator of Abel Grocery.
Survivors include: wife, Susan Hill Abel of Kinston, North Carolina, Leigh M. Abel and Lauryl A. Potter both of Kinston, North Carolina, Brad Hill and David Hill both of Deep Run, Missouri, Doylie Spencer and Linda Benson both of Yazoo City; and 4 grandchildren.
