Don F. Purvis
Died: Monday, January 31, 2005
Age: 59
Don F. Purvis of Pearl, 59, died of heart failure Monday, January 31, 2005 at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland.
Services were held Thursday, February 3 at 2:00 p.m. at Stricklin-King Funeral Home Chapel in Yazoo City with burial in Coxburg Cemetery in Holmes County. Rev. Bryan Abel officiated.
Mr. Purvis was born on July 22, 1945 to Ulysess Daniel Purvis and Lessie Mae Moore Purvis. He worked in law enforcement and was a Veteran of the Vietnam War in the U.S. Army. Mr. Purvis was a member of Center Ridge Baptist Church in Yazoo City.
Survivors include: wife, Peggy Fortenberry Purvis of Pearl; two sons, Don F. Purvis, Jr. and Hardy Purvis, both of Yazoo City; one daughter, Paula Gaskin of Yazoo City; one stepdaughter, Tanya Shows of Brandon; seven sisters, Shirley George of Shreveport, Alabama, Virginia Coutch of Yazoo City, Myrtis Killebrew Hearn and Bobbie Sue Newbaker, both of Lexington; four brothers, Glen Purvis of Baker, California, 90, died December 31, 2004 of cancer.
Mr. Smith was born in Rome, MS on January 20, 1914, the son of Dr. and Mrs. P.M. Smith. The family moved to Tchula in 1926 where they lived for 64 years.
He entered the Army Air Corp in 1942 and served in Europe during World War II with the 8th Air Force Group, 533rd Squadron on a B-17, completing 34 combat missions. He received the Purple Heart, Distinguished Flying Cross, and five combat medals. In 1946, he and his wife, Linna, returned to Tchula, where Philip retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 35 years. They moved to Roseville in 1990.
He was preceded in death by his only brother, Teddy A. Smith, who was killed in 1944 while flying a mission over Germany. Phillip's first wife and mother of his children, Ida Keene Buck of Acona, and his wife of 56 years, the former Linna Marie Rowe of Sacramento, California; a stepdaughter, Robin Kramer (David) ofockledge, Tennessee.
Services were Thursday, November 4 at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Yazoo City with burial in Masonic Cemetery in Amory. Mortimer & Robertson Funeral Home of Yazoo City was in charge of arrangements.
He was born in Smithville on December 24, 1944, and moved to Yazoo City as a young boy. He was a graduate of Yazoo City High School, class of 1963 and held a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture from Nevada. Services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 10, at Wilcox Funeral Home in Carthage with Dr. Eddie Hamilton officiating. Burial was in Center Cemetery.
Matthew was born in Jackson on July 2, 1979. He was a member of Carthage First Baptist Church.
Survivors include: his father, Willie Fred Nazary of Carthage; mother and step-father, Cindy L. Casey and Danny Casey of Kosciusko; sister, Jessica Nazary of Jackson; two step-brothers, Jason and Taylor Casey of McCool; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Murtagh of Iuka, Doris Nazary of Carthage, and Mildred Casey of Kosciusko.
Pallbearers were Michael Chamblee, Nicholas Atchley, David Neal, Jon McDonald, Allen Murtagh and Taylor Casey.
Honorary pallbeareres were Jason Casey, David Murtagh, Dwain Atwood, Mike Haley, and Ricky Casey.

Maye Worthey McKay
Died: Wednesday, June 30, 2004
Age: 102
Mrs. Maye Worthey (Fred) McKay of Pickens, age 102, died at St. Catherine's Village in Madison on Wednesday, June 30, 2004.
The last survivor of the eight children of Cebron T. and Annie Hanna Worthey of the Cameron community of north Madison County, she outlived six brothers, Felton, Bill, Hugh, Wallace, Howard, and Harry; and one sister, Dorothy.
Funeral services for Mrs. McKay were held Friday, July 2, at 11 a.m. at the Pickens Presbyterian Church in Pickens. Burial was at Quiet Ridge Cemetery in Pickens.
While they lived on a farm on Highway 17 north of Pickens, Mrs. McKay's husband Fred operated McKay Pontiac-Buick in Canton from 1950 to 1970, with their only child Bill operating the business until 1991. Mr. McKay commuted from Pickens to Canton during these years while continuing to operate their farm at Pickens.
Mrs. McKay was a member of the As-You-Like-It Club in Pickens, the Pickens Garden Club, and the Pickens Presbyterian Church. She served on the board of Chamberlain-Hunt Academy at Port Gibson.
Mrs. McKay finished high school at Camden, attended Texas; three sisters-in-law, Agnes Worthey and Pearl Worthey, both formerly of Pickens, and Frances McKay of New Hope, Iowa died Friday, June 25, 2004 at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa with Rev. Arthur E. Mills officiating, with burial in Garden of Memories in Waterloo, North Carolina on May 30, 1953 to the late Warren Lindsey, Jr. and Ruth Pugh Lindsey. She moved to Lexington, Miss. to live with her paternal grandparents, the late Edna and Warren Lindsey, Sr. She was a member of Union Missionary Baptist Church where she served as secretary to the Gospelistic Chorus.
Mrs. Gary attended public schools in Lexington, Miss., graduating from Ambrose Elementary and J.J. McClain High School. She was active in the 4-H Club and received high recognition in clothing and textile and modeling projects. She graduated with honors in the class of 1971. Following graduation, Yvonne enrolled at Iowa; one sister, Judy A. Lindsey of Waterloo, Iowa, Reginald K. Lindsey of Pearl, Miss. and Stanley H. Lindsey of Lexington, Miss.; and five grandchildren.
Active pallbearers were: Ned Caples, Donald Harper, Joe Smith, Philip Smith, Clyde Roby, and Leonard Wilder.
Honorary pallbearers were: Raymond Birden, Ronnie C. Lewis, Bryan K. Lindsey, Byron K. Lindsey, Larry R. Lindsey, Herman Wise, Jr., and Fred Wright.
Willie Sanders, Jr.
Died: Friday, June 25, 2004
Age: 64
Willie Sanders of Lexington, 64, died Friday, June 25, 2004 at his residence.
Mr. Sanders was born October 3, 1939 to Ed South Carolina. He worked as a long shoreman.
Survivors include: wife, Melissa Sanders of Lexington; two sons, Willie Sanders, Jr. of Chicago, Illinois; two brothers, Charles Long and Clyde Long, both of Rock Hill, Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.
Memorial services were Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. at Rosemont Gardens Funeral Home in Jackson.
Mr. Porter was a native and lifelong resident of Jackson. He was the son of Charles and Pat Porter.
Survivors include: son, Alex Gill; parents, Kenneth Fitzhugh and Bobbie Ellis; brothers, Jeff Porter of Flowood, Charles Thompson, and Tim Thompson, both of Augusta, Washington of Richland, Rene Porter of Braxton, Cindy Porter of Ponder, Mississippi State Department of Education in Jackson. He was the son of the late Dodd and Pearl Dickerson Cain of the Sallis community. He graduated from Sallis High School, Holmes Junior College, and Delta State University. He received his Masters Degree from the University of Mississippi State Department of Education ending his career there as Director of School Building and Transportation. He retired after 26 years in Jackson and relocated to Corinth.
Survivors include: his wife, Peggy Greer Cain of Corinth; one son, Dr. George L. Cain, Jr. of Corinth; one daughter, Pamela Cain Aderholt of Houston, Alabama; and 6 grandchildren.
Active pallbearers were his four grandsons, Joe Cain, Ben Cain, Lee Cain and Blake Cain, Billy Whitehurst and Ted Alexander.
Honorary pallbearers were his former students of the 1958 championship Tangipahoa Conference of Franklin County and his former high school football team members from Sallis High School.
Shirley Aldridge Hathcock
Died: Sunday, June 20, 2004
Age: 84
Shirley Aldridge Hathcock of Durant, 84, died Sunday, June 20, 2004 at University Hospital of Holmes County in Lexington.
Services were Wednesday, June 23 at 10 a.m. at Southern Funeral Home Chapel in Durant with burial in Brister Cemetery located between Durant and West. Rev. Joel Smith officiated.
Mrs. Hathcock was born August 29, 1919 in Holmes County to the late Leon Aldridge and Willie Mae Holmes Aldridge. She was a dietician for the Durant District II Hospital and was a member of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, H.T. Hathcock and son, David Hathcock. Mr. and Mrs. Hathcock were the first couple to be married at the Mt. Vernon Baptist Church. The couple was married for 63 years before Mr. Hathcock passed away.
Survivors include: four sons, Jimmy Hathcock and Buddy Hathcock, both of Lexington, Billy Hathcock and George Hathcock, both of Durant; one daughter, Mary Jane Allen of Lexington; 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Active pallbearers were: Ricky Hathcock, Matt Hathcock, Chad Allen, Chris Allen, Richard Chisolm, Aaron Steverson, John McCleskey, and Terry Wynne.
Honorary pallbearers were: Danny Tate, Tanner Tate, Danny McBride, Daniel McBride, Cassy McBride, Matt McLemore, Shannon McLemore, and Jason Calihan.
