Cora Lee Austin Buchanan of Durant, 92, died Friday, January 2, 2004 at the University Hospital of Holmes County in Lexington. Graveside services were Sunday, January 4, 2004 at 3:30 p.m. at Mizpah Cemetery in Durant. Mr. Arthur “Pug” Land officiated. Southern Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Elizabeth M. Evans
Died: Thursday, January 01, 2004
Age: 80
Elizabeth M. Evans of Vancleave, 80, died Thursday, January 1, 2004 at Singing River Hospital System in Ocean Springs. Services were Saturday, January 3, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at Southern Funeral Home Chapel in Lexington with burial in Odd Fellows Cemetery. Dr. Mike O’Brien officiated. Southern Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Evans was a retired supervisor of Henson Kickernick. She was a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a member of the First Baptist Church of Lexington. Mrs. Evans was born in Holmes County to Manuel McLellan and Mamie Tate McLellan. She was preceded in death by her husband, T.J. Evans, on June 14, 1978.
Survivors include: one son, Jerry Evans of Vancleave; and 2 grandchildren.
Pallbearers were: Trey Evans, Chad Evans, Robert Hand, Mickey McLellan, Shelton Stone, and Scott Holden.

Bray Cole
Died: Thursday, January 01, 2004
Age: 84
Colonel Bray Cole of Benoit, 84, died Thursday, January 1, 2004 at Bolivar Medical Center in Cleveland. Services were Sunday, January 4 at the Ray Funeral Home in Cleveland with burial in New Cleveland Cemetery. The Rev. Joe Cole officiated.
Colonel Cole was born in Old Hebron on November 16, 1919 to Z. Porter and Mae Braddy Cole. He attended grammar school in Magee and Belzoni and was a graduate of Cleveland High School and Holmes Junior College. Colonel Cole was a high school and college letterman in football, basketball and track. He joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1941 and graduated from flight school in March 1942. He served as a basic flight instructor from 1942 to 1944 and piloted B-24’s over the China-Burma-India ‘Hump’ completing 150 missions over the Himalayas. For his service there he was made an hon-orary officer in the Chinese Air Force. He piloted C-74’s in the Berlin Air Lift. Cole served as Deputy Group Commander of Communications at Misawa AFB in Japan and held several other command positions in his 20 years of service. He retired in 1961 as a Command Pilot with over 5000 flying hours, receiving 15 awards or citations, two of which are The Air Medal with four clusters and The Distinguished Flying Cross.
After his military service, Colonel Cole returned to Bolivar County, where he farmed for twenty-five years. He served as Secretary Treasurer of the Miss. Rice Growers Assoc. and was selected as Texas; sons, Richard Cole of Oak Ridge, Florida; step-daughter, Kim VanDevender of Preston; son, Frankie Hughes of West; step-sons, Ken Mangum and Keith Mangum of Carthage; 4 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
AUBREY RULE PIERCE, JR.
Died: Saturday, April 09, 2005
Age: 61
Aubrey Rule "Bubber" Pierce, Jr., 61, of Lexington, died April 9, 2005, at his residence in Lexington.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 12 at 11 a.m. at Midway United Methodist Church with Rev. Wayne Sheffield, Rev. Lynette Little and Chaplain Dennis McKay officiating. Burial was in Malone Cemetery in Lexington. Southern Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Pierce, a farmer, was born January 11, 1944 to the late Aubrey Rule and Mary Edna Luby Pierce. He was a member of Midway United Methodist Church. One grandchild, Adam Pierce, preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife, Clara Sue Pierce of Lexington; sons, Clarence Pierce and wife Tina of Lexington, Mike Pierce and wife Beadie of Lexington, and Trey Pierce and wife Dana of Bentonia; sisters, Ann Fulton of Crossett, Arkansas, Faye Taylor and husband Bob of Silsbie, Georgia, and Patsy Yokum of Friendswood, Oregon Memorial Cemetery in Lexington. Southern Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Killebrew, a farmer, was born January 14, 1973 to Larry and Mary Heard Killebrew. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Lexington.
He is survived by his wife, Christy T. Killebrew of Lexington; sons, Alex and Alden Killebrew of Lexington; his parents, Larry and Mary Killebrew of Lexington; brothers, Brian Killebrew of Lexington, and Chris Killebrew of Green wood; and his grandmother, Mrs. James Killebrew, Sr. of Tchula.
Pallbearers were: Wilson Cunningham, Bryant Parrish, Jay Cutts, Mitch Mitchell, Tommy Watkins, and Johnny Murtagh.
Honorary pallbearers were: Stan Diffey, Steve Diffey, Thad Killebrew, Travis Killebrew, Heath Killebrew, Keath Killebrew, Russ Pullen, Jay McBride, Rocky Leflore, Mitch Leflore, Tim Joiner, Kenny Joiner, and Mills Heard, Jr.
SADIE IRENE RHYNE
Died: Friday, April 08, 2005
Age: 82
Sadie Irene Rhyne, 82, of Durant, died April 8, 2005, at Hospice in His Hands.
Graveside services were held Sunday, April 10 at 2 p.m. at Odd Fellows Cemetery with Bro. Skipper Maxwell officiating. Southern Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Rhyne, a restaurant owner, was born June 8, 1922 in Yazoo County to George and Margaret Edna McGlawen Pigg. She was a member of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church.
She is survived by her daughter, Carol Floyd of Cordova, Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo.
Services were held at 2:00 p.m. on April 3 at McNeece-Morris Funeral Home Chapel in Mantachie with Bro. Buddy Rushing officiating. Burial was in Center Star Cemetery.
Mr. Dillon was born March 18, 1943, in Mississippi State University and graduated from the University of Mississippi State fan. An avid conversationalist, he loved to socialize and tell stories with his friends.
Survivors include: two step-sons, Lee Jones of Mantachie, and Ricky Ward of Charleston; two step-daughters, Kathy Jones of Amory, and Bethany Jones of Mantachie; two brothers, Stan Dillon and wife Karen of New Albany, and David Dillon and wife Jeane of Lexington; and two step-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were: Jerry Wilburn, Greg Carpenter, Danny Aldridge, Gerald Rushing, Tom Jones, Ray Stanford, Robbie Bogue, Tim Pearce, and Phillip Cantrell.
Joseph Lee Davis
Died: Friday, April 01, 2005
Age: 88
Joseph Lee Davis, 88, a fish farmer of Belzoni, died April 1, 2005, of heart failure, at Baptist Hospital in Jackson.
Funeral services were held April 3, 2005, at First Baptist Church in Belzoni, with burial in Green crest Gardens Cemetery. Mortimer Funeral Home of Belzoni handled arrangements.
Mr. Davis was preceded in death by one son, Robert Davis.
Survivors include: his wife, Ruby N. Davis of Belzoni; four daughters, Joann (Jerry) Blackburn of Thornton, MS, Barbara (Harold) Howard, and Gloria (Tommy) Davis, both of Belzoni, and Lisa (Ricky) Tharp of Indianola; four sons, Billy (Melissa) Davis, and Gordon Davis, both of Belzoni, Richard (Ruby Nell) Davis of Lexington, and Jerry (Charlotte) Davis of Jackson; 18 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.
Maurine Lacey Blaylock
Died: Friday, April 01, 2005
Age: 94
Maurine Lacey Blaylock, 94, retired dry cleaners and fabric shop owner, formerly of Lexington, died Friday, April 1, 2005 at Montfort Jones Memorial Hospital in Kosciusko.
Graveside services were held Sunday, April 3 at 2 p.m. in Oakwood City Cemetery in Winona with Rev. Robert R. Becks, Jr. officiating.
Mrs. Blaylock was born August 23, 1910 in New Albany, Preston Kelly, Jr. officiating.
Mrs. Stewart was born on September 13, 1928, to Wade and Mary (Gillespie) Bell. She was married to Thomas E. Calvin of Delhi, Washington, and Janice Stewart Pittman of Flowood; sons, Talvis Stewart, Jr. of Green wood and Ray Stewart of Pearl; step-daughters, Jeanine Strange of Crosby, Mississippi College, and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY. Mr. Daves was ordained to the ministry at Calvary Baptist Church in Green wood in September of 1951, from there Bro. Daves went on to pastor churches in Mississippi. He retired from Eastend Baptist Church in Columbus in 1988. Bro. Daves was currently pastoring at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in West.
Bro. Daves had served as past president of Itawamba County Baptist Association. He was a former Bible instructor at Itawamba Junior College. He devoted his life to the service of his Lord Jesus Christ. He married Mavis Jaudon on December 23, 1942 in Columbus, MS. He was a WW II Army veteran where he obtained the rank of Corporal.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mavis Daves of Green wood, MS; two daughters, Hope Rubio of Clinton, MS, and Muriell D. Vitt of Tuscaloosa, AL; and step-mother, Ellen Daves of Green wood; three grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
Pallbearers were: Sam Alexander, Johnny McCreary, Wilburn Grace, Alvin Green , Stanley Ellis, Richard Layman, Ruben Green and Jimmy Wilkinson. Honorary pallbearers were: Otto Hall, Jack Martin, and Herbert McCreary.
