Patrick Oneal Oatis
Funeral services were held March 31 at 11 a.m. at John the Baptist Church for Staff Sgt. Patrick Oneal Oatis, 37, of Columbia who died March 26 at Ft. Leonardwood, Mo. Interment was in the New Hope Cemetery. Supt. Sam Quinn officiated at the service.
Visitation was held March 30 from 12 p.m. until 7 p.m.
A native of Columbia, he was a Staff Sgt. for the Army National Guard and a member of New Hope Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by a brother and his mother, Lucy Mae Oatis.
Survivors include: his wife, Rosie Mary Gholar Oatis; his father, Austin Oatis; four daughters, Veronica Gholar, LaTonya Gholar, Britteny Gholar, and LaKita Gholar; two sons, Jonathon Gholar and Jerncruus Silas; three sisters, Flora Oatis, Rose James and Carrie James; six brothers, Cleotha Oatis, Mitchell Oatis, Benjamin Oatis, Marlon Oatis, the Rev. Edward James and Jessie James; nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, other relatives and friends.
Honorary pallbearers were Michael McCullum, Mitchell Oatis, Cleotha Oatis, Steve Akins, Mario Warren, George Britton, Benjamin Oatis, Bobby Robertson and Desie Watts.
Active pallbearers were members of the Army National Guard.
Smith Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Arthur Ray Sims
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. March 20 at Morning Star M.B. Church for Arthur Ray Sims of Marion County who died March 13 at Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg. Interment was in the Rose Hill Church Cemetery in Improve.
Mr. Sims was born Jan. 21, 1959 to the late Quitman Sims Sr. and Vernell Burkett Sims. He grew up in Blue Springs and joined Morning Star Baptist Church at an early age under the leadership of the late Rev. Dr. W.L. Russell. He was a faithful member and was ordained into the ministry. He served his Lord well, even through his talent for singing, which was realized at an early age, he began broadening it by singing with the Morning Stars Gospel Singers.
He received his education in the Marion County school system, graduating in 1977. He joined the United States Army Narional Guard and recieved his basic training at Fort Leonardwood, Mo.
In later years, he met and married Maella Henry and moved his membership to Springhill Missionary Baptist Church in Sandy Hook under the leadership of the Rev. Versie D. Lee. He remained a member until his death.
One sister, Claudine, preceded him in death.
Survivors include: his wife, Maella; his mother Vernell; three brothers, Quitman (Renee) of McComb, Willie Ray (Jackie) of Columbia, Johnny Ray (Nikki) of Mobile, Ala; five sisters, Bobbie Nell, Ruby Lee, Ruby Jean, Ruthie Mae and Constance (Leroy), all of Columbia; one half sister, Annie Ruth of Hattiesburg; five stepchildren, Allen (Kim), John, Charles, Kevin (Tomeka) and Megaera; seven step-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, relatives and friends.
Fannie Creel Keating
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 3 at Crain Funeral Home in Franklinton, La., for Fannie Creel Keating, 73, of Foxworth, who died Sunday, March 31. The Rev. Bobby Dawson officiated at the service. She was a member of Forest Grove Methodist Protestant Church.
Survivors include: five brothers, Marvin Creel, A.C. Creel and J.J. Creel, all of Bogalusa La., Charles Ray Creel of Pine, La., and Dick Creel of Thomas, La.; two sisters, Martha Ann Stringfield of Franklinton, La. and Janice Schilling of Mt. Hermon, La.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Lula Creel and a sister, Ella Mae Thomas.
Visitation was held at Crain Funeral Home from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. Monday, April 2 and after 8 a.m. Tuesday, April 3.
Interment followed in the Star Hill Cemetery.
James Ray Carney
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 3 at Boyd Cemetery for James Ray Carney, 59, of Columbia who died Sunday, April 1 at Marion General Hospital. He was a retired purchaser for Bill’s Dollar Store and a member of Kokomo Baptist Church.
Survivors include: his wife, Joyce Carney of Columbia; his mother, Letha G. Leggett of Columbia; two sons, Jeff Carney of Mendenhall and Jason Carney of Columbia; three daughters, Julie Carney, Jennifer Carney and Janie Ross, all of Columbia; and three grandchildren, Keeley Carney, Kristin Carney, and Cole Carney.
Visitation was held from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Monday, April 2 at Colonial Funeral Home.

Ina Ruth Walker
Ina Ruth Walker, 74, of Bulls Gap, Tenn., passed away at 8:50 p.m. Sunday, March 18 at her residence following an extended illness. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Columbia. She was born Jan. 28, 1927 in Hawkins County, Tenn. to the late John and Ruth Carpenter.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Betty Bean and Mildred Carson and one brother, James Carpenter.
She is survived by: her husband, Haskell Walker of Bulls Gap, Tenn., four sons, Eddie Neal Sandifer of Purvis, Paul Leonard Sandifer, Thomas Everett Sandifer and Robert Lawrence Sandifer, all of Columbia; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Bea Barnes and husband Clarie of Kokomo, Ind., and Helen Webb of Vero Beach, Fla.; one brother, Dave Carpenter and wife Debbie of Kokomo, Ind.; several neices and nephews.
Visitation was held from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 20 at Colboch-Price Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Alsa Galloway
Services were held on March 24 at 11 a.m. at Rose Hill Baptist Church for Alsa Galloway, 94, of Foxworth, who died March 18 at Walthall General Hospital. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Mr. Galloway was a retired carpenter with Ernest Construction Company in New Orleans, La.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Essie Galloway; a daughter, Berthatee Galloway; a son, D.L. Galloway; and a brother, Willie Galloway.
Survivors include: a daughter, Carrie M. Henry of Foxworth; a son, Howard Galloway of New Orleans, La.; a daughter-in-law, Dalphine Galloway of New Orleans, La.; seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Lela Mae Broom
Funeral services were held Thursday, May 31, 2001 at 2 p.m. for Lela Mae Broom at Community Funeral Home Chapel. Bro. Theodore Broom and Bro. John King officiated, with interment following in New Union Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Broom was born Aug. 8, 1913 in Sims, Ala., to Jessie and Emmie Powell. She was a homemaker and a resident of Marion County for many years. She died Wednesday, May 29 at Marion General Hospital after a lengthy illness.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William “Bill” Broom; two daughters, Edna Mae Miller and Lessie Merle Broom and one stepson, Cassie Broom.
She is survived by four sons, Carroll David Broom, James I. Broom and Charles Floyd Broom, all of Columbia and Jessie Ray Broom of Angie, La.; one daughter, Ethel Dykes of Abita Springs, La.; 29 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were her grandson and great-grandsons, Lewis Broom, Darroll Broom, Raymond Broom, Lewis Broom Jr., William Speights, Morgan Langston, Nathan Langston and Justin Hibley.
Addie B. Thornhill
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 5, 2001 at Enon Baptist Church for Addie B. Thornhill, 96, of Columbia, who died Saturday, June 2 at The Myrtles nursing home. Interment was in the Woodlawn Cemetery.
Visitation was held Monday, June 4 from 5 p.m. - 9 p.m. at Colonial Funeral Home.
Mrs. Thornhill was a retired school teacher and a member of Enon Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, C.M. “Red” Thornhill Sr., in 1975.
Survivors include two sons, Malcolm Thornhill of Columbia and John Thornhill of Waxahachie, Stone Mountain, Ga., and John Lovall Robbins of Hattiesburg; one neice and three nephews.

Rebecca Meador
Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 12, 2001 at 2 p.m. at Community Funeral Home Chapel for Rebecca Meador, 36, of Petal, who died Saturday, June 9 in Jones County. Interment was in the Improve Cemetery. The Rev. Ron Burch officiated at the service.
Visitation was held Monday, June 11 from 5:30 p.m. - 9 p.m.
A native of Columbia, she worked for Bell South.
Survivors include her parents, Billy Stringer and Paula Stringer of Columbia; one daughter, Elizabeth Jean Meador of Petal and one brother, Brian Darrell Stringer of Columbia.
Community Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Suzanne M. Prine
Suzanne M. Prine, 50, passed away Thursday, May 24, 2001 at her residence.
Visitation was held at Memory Chapel Funeral Home on Saturday, May 26 from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. follwed by services Sunday, May 27 at Colonial Funeral Home in Columbia.
Interment was in the Woodlawn Cemetery.
Mrs. Prine was a faithful member of Tuscaloosa Church of God where she was active in the choir. She and her husband devoted many years to the children’s church ministry.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Ricky Morgan.
Survivors include: her husband, Gregory Prine; one daughter, Lana Prine of Tuscaloosa; her parents, Herman and Billie Sue Morgan; two brothers, Mitchell and Michael Morgan and sister, Rachael (Keith) Fortenberry of Columbia.
Pallbearers were Dan Oglesby, Soney Oglesby, Sam Prine, Keith Fortenberry, Norman Bullock and Raymond Bullock.
Honorary pallbearer was Rick White of Tuscaloosa, Ala.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lana Prine for college fund in care of the University of Alabama Credit Union.
A homecoming memorial service at Tuscaloosa Church of God will be held Sunday, June 17 at 2 p.m. All friends are invited.
