Lewis Peavy
Funeral services were held Friday, Nov. 29, at Enon Baptist Church for Lewis Peavy, 73, of Columbia, who died Nov. 27 at his home.
Burial was in the church cemetery. Brother Glynn Erwin, Brother James Broome and Brother Billy Pierce officiated.
A native of Marion County, he was born May 14, 1929, the son of the late Bias and Alpha Andrews Peavy. He was a self-employed electrician. Prior employment was with Singley’s Dairy and Evans Tobacco Company.
He was a member of Enon Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Wilma Peavy, and two sisters, Artie Lee Drohen and Katie Bilbo.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Tommy Jean Bullock Peavy; three sons, Darrell (Debbie) Peavy, William Peavy and Richard (Debbie) Peavy, all of Columbia; one daughter, Janell (Greg) Robbins, also of Columbia; two brothers, Hollis Peavy of Lumberton and Leroy Peavy of Ragley, La.; eight grandchildren, Mark, Kyle, Josh, Patrick, Robin and Drew Peavy, and Cole and Damie Robbins; three great-grandchildren, Tanner, Brennan and Landon Peavy; nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were nephews Shelton, Larry, Chuck and Dale Peavy, Danny and Joe Bullock, Ronnie Tolar and Mike Felber.
Special singing was provided by Mike Riley, Rebecca Broom, Michelle Pierce and Dawn Baughman. Congregational singing was led by Joe Tolar. Accompanists were Linda Simmons and Betty Tolar.
Colonial Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Thomas Arny Rhoden
Funeral services were scheduled to be held Wednesday morning, Jan. 29, in the First Baptist Church in Columbia for Thomas Arny Rhoden, 90, of Columbia, who died Monday, Jan. 27, at Marion General Hospital.
Burial was to be in the Woodlawn Cemetery. Dr. Wayne VanHorn was to officiate at the service.
A native of Columbia, he was a member of First Baptist Church.
He graduated from Columbia High School in 1929 and earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Georgia Tech, where he attained the rank of second lieutenant. He served in the U.S. Army until the end of World War II.
He then moved back to Columbia, where he became a Gulf Oil distributor. He established a National Guard Unit in Columbia and retired with the rank of Colonel.
He served as president of the Marion County Chamber of Commerce and, for many years, he was president of the P.T.A.
While at First Baptist Church, he was a dedicated deacon and taught Sunday School for 30 years.
He was instrumental in the formation of First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Marion County. He was an alderman for the city of Columbia and served as ad valorem commissioner of the State Tax Commission, where he later served six years as chairman. He was state director of the Federal Housing Administration for Mississippi. He was a rotarian, Lions Club member and a member. He was a regional leader of the Boy Scouts, president of the Community Chest and an active volunteer for the Red Cross.
He was one of the first five inductees into the state Democratic Party Hall of Fame. He was chosen Man of the Year by the Columbia Junior Auxiliary.
He had long-lasting friendships with Sen. John Stennis and Gov. J.P. Coleman and was in close communication with them both.
A devoted husband, loving father and selfless civic leader, his wit and strength of character will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him.
Survivors include his wife, Amy Rimes Rhoden; a daughter, Rebecca Rhoden Kent and her husband, Allan, of Tupelo; three sons, Thomas H. Rhoden and wife Sharon and Richard E. Rhoden and wife Tracey, both of Jackson, and James C. Rhoden and wife Karen of Columbia; a half-brother, John Hugh Rhoden and wife Cindy of Laurel; eight grandchildren, Kevin Kent, Keith Kent and Kathryn Kent of Tupelo, Thomas Rhoden, Jeffrey Rhoden and Chad Rhoden of Jackson, Matthew Rhoden of Boston and Courtney Rhoden of Columbia; and four great-grandchildren, Amanda Kent, Richard Kent, Jacob Kent and Anna Kent of Tupelo.
Pallbearers were his eight grandchildren.
Honorary pallbearers included Judge Sebe Dale Jr., Dr. Jerry Fortenberry, Sedgie Griffith, Riley Berry, Frank Matulich and Charles Murphree.
Colonial Funeral Home of Columbia was in charge of arrangements.

Dr. Marlyn R. Fink
Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003 in the First United Methodist Church for Dr. Marlyn R. Fink, 77, of Columbia.
A longtime resident of Columbia he was a Chiropactic doctor and a member of first United Methodist Church. He was a WWII and Korean War veteran. He also was in affiliation with the Marion Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, Marion County Shriners, Pennsylvania, Jo Lynn Fink of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.
Visitation was held from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m.
Thursday, Jan. 23 at Hartman Funeral Home in McComb. Visitation continued at 9 a.m. Friday, Jan. 24 at Navilla Baptist Church in McComb, until services there at 11 a.m. The Rev. Howard Brister and the Rev. J. Frank Smith officiated. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Smith was born Sept. 22, 1918 in Pike County. She was the daughter of Marion Deer and Minnie McKenzie Deer.
She was a homemaker and a member of Navilla Baptist Church where she was a member of the Elizabeth Sunday School Class. She loved to read. She also loved music, especially gospel singing. She enjoyed all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by: her parents; her husband, E.J. Smith; 11 brothers, Harvey, Roy, Jones, Ray, Kirby, Walter, William, Charlie, Ford, Stanley and Floyd Deer; and three sisters, Dora Coker, Evelyn Phelps and Grace Falkie.
Survivors include: one son and daughter-in-law, Raymond and Peggy Smith of McComb; two daughters and one son-in-law, Jeanette Smith Mercier, and Mary and Bubba Dean, all of McComb; two brothers, Herbert Deer of Amite County and Bert Deer of McComb; six grandchildren and their spouses, Jason Smith, Julie Smith Hudson and Louis “Guy”, Alfred Ray Mercier Jr., and Lisa, and Laurie Mercier Sudduth and James, all of McComb, Steven “Steve” Brent Mercier and Lisa of Columbia, and Dee Dean Cockroft and Scott of Kosciusko; 11 great-grandchilren, Adam Mercier, Dusty Mercier and Sarah Mullins of Columbia, Brent Mercier of McComb, Aaron Cockroft and Jake Cockroft of Kosciusko, Chris Mercier, Scott Mercier, Justin Hudson, Madison Smith, and Kristin Sudduth, all of McComb.
Pallbearers were her grandsons and grandsons-in-law, Jason Smith, Alfred Ray Mercier Jr., Steve Mercier, Chris Mercier, James Sudduth, Scott Cockroft and Louis Guy Hudson.

Donald Parkman
Funeral services were held Mondayn Jan. 20, 2003 at the China Lee Missionary Baptist Church for Donald Parkman, 43, of Silver Creek, who died Jan. 16 at his residence.
Interment was in the New Hope Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, with Dr. Edward J. Earl officiating.
A native of Columbia, he was a offshoreman.
He was preceded in death by his father, Clifton Parkman Sr., and his brother Clifton (Bubba) Parkman, Jr.
Survivors include: his wife, Judy Parkman; his mother, Maudine Parkman-Sloan; two daughters, Jasmine Yvonne Parkman and Ebonee Hartwell; two sons, Lekendrix D. Parkman, and Bradley O. Varnado; three sisters, Janice Swinney, Loretta Martin, and Karen Lindsey; two brothers, Frank Parkman and Neal Parkman.
Pallbearers were Jerald Slay, Ronald Montgomery, Clarence Odom, James Terrell, Michael McNair, Alton Middleton.

Carolyn Clark McLeod
Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 27, 2003 at the chapel of Colonial Funeral Home for Carolyn Clark McLeod, 46, of Foxworth, who died Friday, Jan. 24 at her residence.
Interment was in the Turnage Chapel Cemetery with David Jones officiating.
A native of Tylertown, she was a homemaker and a member of May’s Creek Church of God.
Survivors include: her husband, George E. McLeod; parents, Melvin and Lena Mae Clark of Foxworth; three daughters, Melody Albritton, Melissa McLeod, and Hope Martin, all of Foxworth; one sister, Cynthia Breakfield of Foxworth; and two grandchildren.

Correna Wood
Funeral service were held Friday, Jan. 24, 2003 in the chapel of Colonial Funeral Home for Correna Wood, 71, of Columbia, who died Saturday, Jan. 25 at Marion General Hospital.
Interment was in the Caney Cemetary with Bro. Warren Selman officiating.
A native of Lamar County, she was a nurses aid and a member of the Church of Nazerene.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Walter Wood.
Survivors include: three sons, Walter Wood of Lubbock, Texas, Thomas “Bo Bo” Wood of Wiggins, and Clarence Wood of Columbia; one sister, Margaret Stevens of Columbia; one brother, George Smith of Columbia; 7 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren.

Marie Marlene Rucker Peters
Marie Marlene Rucker Peters, 51, of Columbia, died Wednesday Jan. 1, 2003 at her residence.
A native of Marion County, she was a housewife.
Survivors include: her husband, John Peters of New Hope; two daughters, Nicole Samford of Goss, and Paula Bass of Holly Springs; three sons, Randy Cornwell of Columbia, Jody Samford of Bogalusa, La., and William Hawk of Holly Springs; 13 grandchildren, and a special friend Angia Parks.
Community Funeral Home of Columbia was in charge of arrangements.
A memorial service will be held at a later date for the family.
Clara Agnes Ford
Clara Agnes Ford, a homemaker, died Friday, January 10 at Palomar Medical Center in Escondido, Ca. She was 78. Mrs. Ford was born as Clara Agnes Sylvest on October 8, 1924 in Marion County. For the past 18 years she lived in Escondido, Ca. Mrs. Ford volunteered for years at the Floadrian Manor Nursing Home in Columbia, Ms. She continued to visit friends in the nursing home until shortly before her death.
Survivors include: her husband, James M. Ford of Escondido Ca.; one daughter, Candace L. Ford-Schramm of Escondido Ca.; two sons, James E. Ford of Lafayette Ca., and Stephen P. Ford of New Orleans, La.; two sisters, Lucy E. Thornhill and Ada V. McNeese of Columbia, Ms.; two brothers, Mac A. Sylvest of Eureka, Ca., and Francis M. Sylvest of Columbia, Ms.; eight grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Ford was a devoted Catholic and donations in lieu of flowers can be sent to: MaryKnoll Fathers and Brothers, P.O. Box 302, MaryKnoll, NY., 10545.
According to Agnes Ford’s wishes she was cremated and there will be a private family service in the spring.
