William Richard Russell

William Richard Russell, born July 23, 1915 in Albion, Mississippi. He also studied journalism at New York and Berlin, Germany, where his experiences provided material for his first published work Berlin Embassy, a fascinating account of pre-World War II Germany. In 1942, Mississippi Jr. College followed a brief stint at The Commercial Appeal in Memphis.

In 1977-78, Russell was director of "Making Yourself Heard," a public policy issue discussion project sponsored by the Mississippi Committee for the Humanities and conducted in fifty public libraries throughout the state.

He moved home to Tunica shortly thereafter to care for his elderly mother and devoted himself to her care until her death. He came out of retirement to work for The Tunica Times from February 1993 until August 1995, during which time he produced numerous award-winning news and feature stories.

"Some of his most memorable work for me was a story about his experience in Berlin at Kristallnacht," said Times editor Brooks Taylor. "But he found a lighter side too. One of my favorite pieces was 'Mollie the setter sees the world.' Readers particularly enjoyed his award-winning series 'World War II Remembered,' which profiled Tunica veterans.

"He also took on such controversial pieces as retrospectives on local school desegregation and Sugar Ditch. Since his employment coincided with the development of casinos in Tunica County, Mr. Russell covered many stories on the growth of the gaming industry."

Russell was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Tunica and a former member of the Friends of R.C. Irwin Library and lent assistance to the Tunica County Literacy program, volunteering to lead new readers in creative writing exercises.

"He served as a role model to some of our people and said, 'You can do this, you just need to give it a try,'" said Betty Jo Dulaney, Literacy Center Director. "We're going to miss him a lot."

He is survived by one sister, Helen Finsness of Memphis, and four nephews, Russ Finsness of Pittsburg, Mississippi. The family requests that any memorials be made to First Presbyterian Church or R.C. Irwin Library in Tunica.
