Edrie Sue McCleland
Edrie Sue McCleland of Pelahatchie, 68, died Sept. 17 at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland.
Funeral services were at Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home chapel on High Street with burial in the Terry Cemetery.
Mrs. McCleland was retired from the Maine; 4 grandchildren, Leslie R. Brown of Madison, George K. Burns Jr., William H. Burns II and Renee Burns, all of the Memphis, Tenn. area; three great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews also survive her.
Memorials may be made to the Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson.
Services were Sept. 21 at Lakewood Funeral Home in Jackson with burial in Lakewood Memorial Park.
Mr. Howell was born in Vernon, Texas. He was a member of Heritage Baptist Church in Byram. He was a retired driver with Yellow Freight. Mr. Howell enjoyed woodworking and fishing, and was affiliated with Teamsters No. 891, Single Action Shooting Society (SASS), and the "NRA." He served in the armed forces from 1955-1958.
Survivors include his wife, Juanita of Clinton; sons, Mike Howell of Bartlett, Tenn., Chris Howell and wife Angela of Brandon; daughters, Shelly Heizer and husband Hal of Amarillo, Georgia Byers Stanford
On Sept. 17, Texas. She was educated in the schools of San Antonio and graduated from South San Antonio High School in 1941; she was also the drum major for the school band.
Much of her adult years were spent working in some type of office management. For a number of years she was a long distance operator for South Central Bell Telephone. She also work in the family grocery store, Long's Grocery, in South San Antonio.
In 1958, her family moved to Mississippi College in Clinton.
In the 1970s, she and her husband, the Rev. Ward B. Byers Jr., opened the Busy B's Secretariat located in downtown Jackson. She continued with the business after his death in 1976.
The Rev. and Mrs. Byers served several churches in Georgia accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. Serving Jesus was the most important thing in her life. In 1989, she volunteered to go to Canada to serve at the Southern Baptist Seminary in Cochran, B.C.
It is with that love of missions and service to her Lord in mind that her family request that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the church where her grandson is the pastor: Kingwood Southern Baptist Church, care of Gladys Adkins, 205 Sanders St., Kingwood, W.Va. 26537. Your support to work of Jesus through those wonderful people in Kingwood would be greatly appreciated.
Mrs. Stanford was preceded in death by both of her parents, one brother, J. W. Long, her husbands, Rev. Ward B. Byers Jr. and Edward L. Stanford.
Her remaining family consists of her daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Claude Persons of Clinton; grandson and wife, Ricky and Amy Persons of Kingwood, W.Va.; granddaughter and husband, Beth and Danny Taylor of Brandon. She was extremely proud of her great-grandchildren: Matthew Taylor, Grace Persons and Clay Persons.
In recent months the Lord brought into Mrs. Stanford's life, Annie Louise Washington bestowed on Mrs. Stanford. Joyce also extends her appreciation to Dr. Grace Shumaker and her staff at the Hederman Cancer Clinic, and to Debbie Runyon and her co-workers at Hospice Ministries.
We would also wish to thank those who so faithfully visited her during her illness: Ruth Granger of Hazlehurst; Frances Smith of Jackson; Frances Bell, Paul Cassibry and John Legg, all of Clinton.
Pallbearers were Mark Norwine of Georgetown, Texas; David Wall of Brandon; Curtis Lee of Georgetown; Paul Cassibry and John Legg of Clinton.
Florence L. Burrage
Florence L. Burrage of Pearl, 78, died Sept. 21 at Woods Baptist Church and Sunday school, she enjoyed taking care of the infants at Alta Woods Baptist Church, 168 Colonial Drive, Jackson, Miss. 39204.
Beatrice B. 'Bobbi' Crump
Beatrice Barbara "Bobbi" Crump of Clinton, a professional housekeeper, died Sept. 22 at her home. Graveside services were Sept. 27 in Lakewood Memorial Park in Clinton.
Bobbi was born Jan. 23, 1938, in Hastings, Neb. She lived in Mississippi.
Bobbi's pride and joy in life was her son, Jimmy, who was born in 1971, and was killed in a car accident in March 1992. Bobbi celebrated her son's life and honored his memory, sharing happy recollections of Jimmy with her friends and always emphasizing that she knew her son was in Heaven, and that she would see him again someday.
As a professional housekeeper, Bobbi brought a sense of pride, dignity and responsibility to her work. She was a trustworthy, dependable and loyal, and many of her clients were also her close friends. Several of Bobbi's customers had trusted the care of their homes to her for more than a decade, some for as long as 20 years.
"Bobbi was a member of our family,' said longtime client and friend, Marlo Kirkpatrick. "She never left our house without telling us, 'I love you.' We loved her, too."
In a note to a friend a few months before her death, Bobbi wrote, "Love is what I've always treasured. Unconditional love."
Bobbi was a woman of faith who credited God with helping her through the death of her son. She spoke often of her anticipation of arriving in Heaven, where she would be reunited with Jimmy, and with her much loved dog, Keishla.
She was a member of Morrison Heights Baptist Church.
Bobbi will be remembered for her deep love and compassion for animals; her delicious carrot cake and chocolate chip cookies; her fondness of Lifetime movies and her little red truck; and a stubborn exterior that concealed a tender, loving heart.
Bobbi was preceded in death by her sisters, Bettye and Hester; her beloved son, Jimmy Crump; and her cherished schnauzer and companion of 12 years, Keishla.
She is survived by her sister, Hazel Gamble of Price ; Linda Barrack; Colleen Simmons; Allen and Pink Mize; and Stephen and Marlo Kirkpatrick; and by her dog, Sugar.
Evelyn Redd
Evelyn Redd of Columbia, 79, secretary for First Baptist Church in Jackson and Mississippi Baptist Convention Board.
Converted and baptized at age 15, she spent her adult life involved in Sunday school and WMU work. She enjoyed working for her Lord and Savior. Her favorite hymn was Have Faith in God.
After her retirement from the Convention Board, she moved to Columbia where she became a member of the First Baptist Church there.
Mrs. Redd is survived by many friends; her brother and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph E. Redd of Mandeville, La.; her sister and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Leggett (Lucile) of Columbia.
Nieces and nephews include Dr. and Mrs. Paul Robertson (Judy) of Houston, Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson.
Funeral services were Sept. 24 at Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home in Jackson with burial in Lakewood Memorial Park.
Mrs. Gregory was a native of Harriston and a longtime resident of Clinton. She was a graduate of Belhaven College, where she was a member of the Alpha Delta Kappa sorority.
She taught school in Canton and Jackson Public Schools for over 30 years. She was a member of the Maids and Matrons Club of Clinton.
Mrs. Gregory was a member of First Baptist Church of Clinton and the Master Life Bible Study.
Survivors include her brothers, Clarence H. Gregory of Clinton and Jeff Gregory of Long Beach; niece, Elizabeth Kate Gregory Rhodes of Winter Garden, Fla.; nephew, Jeff Gregory Jr. of Pensacola, Fla.; and great-nieces, Amy Elizabeth and Ashley Rhodes.
Memorials may be made to the Baptist Children's Village, 805 Flag Chapel Road, Jackson, Miss. 39209.
J.D. Hood
J.D. Hood of Crystal Springs, 92, died Sept. 21 at Magnolia House in Natchez.
Services were Sept. 23 in the chapel of Stringer Family Funeral Services in Crystal Springs with burial in Crystal Springs Cemetery.
Mr. Hood was a graduate of Crystal Springs High School. He was a pilot in the U.S. Army during World War II. He operated a sawmill in his early career and later was a cattleman and hog farmer for many years.
He was a lifelong resident of Copiah County, except for the time served in the army. Mr. Hood was a member of the Church of Christ.
Survivors include: daughters, Joyce Ferguson of Crystal Springs and Anna Sue Steadman and husband Joe W. of Natchez; brother, Grover Hood of Clinton; and grandson, Clint Ferguson.
James Henry Young Jr.
James Henry "Jim" Young Jr. of Clinton, 42, died Sept. 25 at home.
Services were Sept. 28 at Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home in Clinton with burial in Hazlehurst Cemetery.
Jim was born Feb. 21, 1962, in Hazlehurst. Jim was an avid outdoorsman, who especially loved camping, skiing, fishing and hunting.
He always said he felt closer to God when able to walk with Him in God's outdoor wonderland. Jim was a member of Pineview Baptist Church in Clinton.
Jim married his soulmate, Cathy, on July 1, 2003. Even though they only had a short time together, the love they shared was evident to anyone who came into contact with them. Jim's pride and joy were his children; Katie, Olivia, Parker, Casey Rae and Stephanie, and his many nieces and nephews.
Jim was a friend to many and never turned his back on anyone.
Jim told his family, when he was first diagnosed with cancer that it was a win-win situation for him, either he would be healed and remain with his family or he would be in heaven with his Creator. Today, Jim is reunited with his grandfathers, B.C. Farrar, John Gatewood and Percy Young; grandmother, Pauline Young; and uncle Colvin Farrar, who preceded him in death.
He also leaves behind his parents, Lanell and Thomas Gatewood, and James H. Young Sr.; grandmothers, Bobbie Farrar and Luna Gatewood; sisters, Michelle G. Cook, Debra Y. Atkins and Tara Y. Babin; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society, 1380 Livingston Lane, Jackson, Miss. 39213.
