Corine Buckles
ROXIE - Corine "Lena" Buckles died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, at her home. She was 72.
Mrs. Buckles was a retired cook. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Roxie, where she was on the Mother Board and Usher Board. She was a former member of the Order of Eastern Star.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Essie Hammond Magee and Clarence Hammond Sr.; a son, Alvin L. Buckles; one sister, Ivory Mae Malone; one brother, Joe J. Hammond; and a granddaughter, Jessica C. McCoy.
Survivors include her husband, Albert Buckles Jr.; four daughters, Essie Singleton and Beverly McCoy, both of Roxie, Mary Proby of Natchez and Dorothy White of Biloxi; two brothers, Viria Hammond of Hattiesburg and Clarence Hammond Jr. of Newport, Tenn.; one sister, Thelma Hockett of Roxie; and 12 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church of Roxie with the Rev. Carl Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1 until 7 tonight at Rollins Funeral Home in Fayette.
Pallbearers will be Roosevelt Williams, Keldrick Keys, Noah Rankin, Donald Hammond, Henry Brooks, Broderick McCoy and Barnaby White.
Shirley Barnes Chatman
BOLTON - Shirley Barnes Chatman, formerly of Vicksburg, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, at Central South Carolina; a son, Alfred Davis Jr. of Bolton; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews, including Linda Barnes Wright of Vicksburg; and cousins and other relatives.
Bolton Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Mary Jane Cotten
WEST MONROE, La. - Mary Jane Cotten died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, at her home in West Monroe, La. She was 47.
Mrs. Cotten was born in Monroe.
She was preceded in death by her father, W.L. Cotten.
She is survived by a son, Shawn Paul Cotten of Oak Grove; her mother, Myra Beatrice Davis Cotten of Monroe; three brothers, Troy Cotten of West Monroe, Larry Cotten of Oak Grove and James Davis of Richton; three sisters, Betty Cotten of West Monroe, Pat Hernandez of Collinston, La., and Brenda Spillers of Downsville, La.; one grandson; and nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Cox Funeral Home in Oak Grove with the Rev. J.D. Favors officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery.
Visitation will be until 9 tonight at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Michael Cotten, Jason Spillers, Jared Cotten, Dustin Cotten, Joel Cotten and Henry Kimball.
Corine Beacham Hicks
UTICA - Corine Beacham Hicks died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, at Forest Hill Nursing Center in Jackson. She was 107.
Mrs. Hicks was a former Utica resident.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Westhaven Memorial Funeral Home in Utica with K.C. Frazier officiating. Burial will follow at Little Mount Church Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
John Kendrick
ROLLING FORK - John Kendrick died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005, at Sharkey-Issaquena Hospital in Rolling Fork. He was 70.
Mr. Kendrick is survived by his wife, Claudia Kendrick of Rolling Fork; two sons, James Kendrick of Robbins, Ill., and Jerry Kendrick of Menard, Ill.; four daughters, Shirley Williams of Green ville, Toya Kendrick of Rolling Fork, Annette Speed of Harvey, Ill., and Monica Kendrick of Chicago Heights, Ill.; three brothers, the Rev. Ollie Kendrick of Omaha, Neb., Joe Kendrick of Andover, Md., and Kenneth Kendrick of Texas, and Robert Amos of Mooringsport, La.; two daughters, Karen Daniel of Vicksburg and Michelle Skains of Farmerville; one stepdaughter, Sherri Griffith of Shreveport, La.; a sister, Catherine Nowlin of Monroe; a brother, Bobby Dunham of Cheyenne, Wyo.; seven grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends, including Martha Amos.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Farrar Funeral Home in Farmerville with the Rev. David Martin officiating.
Visitation will be from 5 until 8 tonight at the funeral home.
Ruby Lee Jackson Bass
Services for Ruby Lee Jackson Bass will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Mount Pilgrim M.B. Church with the Rev. Louis A. Hall Sr. officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 until 7 tonight at W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home.
Mrs. Bass died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005, at River Region Medical Center. She was 93.
A homemaker, Mrs. Bass was a member of Mount Pilgrim M.B. Church at Freetown, where she had served on the Mother Board for more than 40 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Sylvester Bass Jr.; a son, Sylvester Bass III; a daughter, Annie Bass Amos; a granddaughter, Marsha Bass McKelphin; and her parents, Jessie and Martha Jackson.
She is survived by a son, George Bass of Vicksburg; three daughters, Martha Warrick of New Orleans and Evelyn Bass and Bobbie Bass, both of Vicksburg; eight grandchildren, Winfred Warrick, Armond Bass, Ruby Mercadel, Larry Bass, Michael Bass, Robert Earl Bass, Tony Bass Sr. and Carla Fields; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Shirley Barnes Chatman
BOLTON - Services for Shirley Barnes Chatman will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mount Zion Church of God in Christ on William Lake Road in Bolton. Bolton Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Chatman died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, at Central South Carolina; a son, Alfred Davis Jr. of Bolton; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews, including Linda Barnes Wright of Vicksburg; and cousins and other relatives.
Edward R. Cox Jr.
Edward R. Cox Jr. died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2005, at the University of Mississippi.
He played professional baseball in the Farm League of the Brooklyn Dodgers and scouted for the Baltimore Orioles. He founded Vicksburg Paint and Glass Co. in 1951 and helped found Southern Door and Hardware Co. Inc. He also owned Capital Paint and Glass Co. in Jackson.
Mr. Cox was past president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce and of the Vicksburg Catholic School board. He was former director of the Miss Mississippi Pageant and was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 898. He was a communicant and charter member of St. Michael Catholic Church.
He was preceded in death by a son, Steven Edward Cox; a brother, James Newton Cox; and a sister, Mary Lillian Cox.
Survivors include his wife, Jeanette G. Cox of Vicksburg; three sons, Jeff Cox of Vicksburg, Christopher A. Cox of Brandon and Perry N. Cox of Madison; two brothers, Patrick H. Cox of Charlotte, N.C., and Ernest J. Cox of Mobile; and eight grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Michael Catholic Church with the Rev. P.J. Curley, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow at Green Acres Memorial Park.
Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. Friday at Riles Funeral Home, followed by a prayer service at 7, and Saturday at the church from 9 a.m. until the service.
Pallbearers will be Christopher Cox Jr., Chad Edward Cox, Eddie Monsour, Alex Shiers, C.L. Hardy Jr. and Lance Boswell.
Honorary pallbearers will be William Thigpen, Jimmy Vessell, A.L. Sullivan, David McBee, John Byram and Joe Grayson.
