Merle Harper
Merle Harper, 95, of Gaines-ville, Texas, with the Rev. Bobby Texas, and a member of First United Metho-dist Church of Mineral Wells, Texas in 1926.
Mrs. Harper was preceded in death by her parents; her husband who died May 19, 1980, Clyde H. Harper; one son, Clyde M. Harper who died in March 1997; three daughters, Paula Stroker who died in 1982, Gertie Benner who died in 1985 and Mary Hartford who died in 1995; and a grandson, Jon Harrington who died in 1994.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Cecil and Shir-ley Harper of Gainesville; one daughter and son-in-law, Bebe and Jim Harrington of Magnolia; one daughter-in-law, Ruth Harper of Mineral Wells; 16 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be grandsons.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Home Hospice of Cooke County, P.O. Box 936, Gainesville, Parker Smith.
She was a homemaker and a member of Mt. Olive Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Truly Whittington; and one daughter, five brothers and one sister.
Survivors include two sisters, Callie Hunt of Meadville and Nellie Poole of Natchez; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Martin ‘Bear’ Hill
Martin “Bear” Hill of New Orleans died May 25, 2000, at the home of his daughter.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Greater St. Andrew’s Baptist Church in New Orleans. Burial will be in the Providence Memorial Park Cemetery in New Orleans. L.A. Gaskin-Tilly Mortuary Inc. of New Orleans is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Hill was born in Magnolia. He worked for Mississippi Box and Crate Co. for 35 years, where he retired.
Survivors include four daughters, Nora Douglas and Celia (Ruben) Lewis, both of New Orleans, Annie Fennell of Los Angeles, and Mary Ann Shaw (Bobby Joe) of McComb; three sons, Donald (Willie Mae) Miller and Jerry (Doreen) Hill, both of New Orleans, and Martin (Elouise) Shaw of McComb; one sister, Lillie Marie Perine of Saginaw, Mich.; three stepsons, Robert Earl Shaw and Charles Shaw, both of Pontiac, Mich., and Larry Brown of Magnolia; six stepdaughters, Gloria Shaw of Pontiac, Lelia Stokes of Columbus, Ga., and Lelia Mae Shaw, Angela Coleman, Deloris Shaw and Felicia Shaw, all of Magnolia; his former wife, Myrtis Hill; and 17 grandchildren, 14 step-grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.
Virginia W. Bailey
Virginia Edith Weeks Bailey, 92, of the Barlow community, died May 27, 2000, at McComb Extended Care Center.
Visitation is 5-8 this evening at Hartman Funeral Home of McComb. Services are 10 a.m. Monday at East Union Baptist Church in Magnolia. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
