Services for Ms. Dorothy Ann Shields, 40, of Tunica were held on at 1 p.m. on Friday, August 30, 2002, at Greater New St. Paul Church, with burial in Shady Grove Memorial Garden in Tunica. Reverend Ben Pratt officiated at the services.
Ms. Shields, a former employee of Sam's Town Casino, died August 25. She was born February 24, 1962 in Tibbs, MS, and educated in Tunica County schools. She was a member of Scott Chapel.
Ms. Shields is survived by one son, Brian L. Smith of Walls, MS; her grandparents, Dorothy A. Williams and Johnny Thomas of Crenshaw, MS; her stepfather Louis H. Johnson of Crenshaw; six brothers, Louis E. Smith, Eugene Johnson, Curtis Johnson, and Cedrick Johnson, all of Crenshaw, Terence Johnson of Sledge, MS, and Thomas D. Williams, Jr., of Clinton, Illinois, Ella J.Johnson of Jacksonville, FL, Olga Williams and Annette Garrett of Clinton, Illinois.
He is survived by four daughters, Gloria Rucker and Jewell Porter, both of Memphis, TN, and Willa Turner and Michelle Smith, both of Dundee; eleven sons, Tommy Williams, L.B. Williams, Lonnie Williams, Larry Williams, James Williams, Tracy Williams, Lee Andrew Williams, and Tyrone Williams, all of Chicago, and Jessie James Williams, Reginald Williams, and Rodrick Williams, all of Dundee; five sisters, Edith McClauria and Lovie C. McClain, both of Chicago, and Bobbie J. Hale, Bobbie A.Williams, and Christine Harrell, all of Crenshaw; two brothers, Terry Williams of Tibbs, MS, and Jerry Williams of Memphis; 34 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Annie M. Williams.
Leontine 'Leone' Petersons
Died: Wednesday, July 31, 2002
Age: 99
Graveside services for Ms. Leontine "Leone" Petersons, 99, of Tunica will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, August 14, 2002, at Oakwood Cemetery in Tunica, with Rev. Harrison Johns of Harrisburg, AR and Rev. Danny Smith of Tunica officiating.
Ms. Petersons, the longtime companion for the late Virginia Newsom, died July 31 at Tunica Convalescent Center. She came to America from Latvia after World War II and became a naturalized citizen.
Ms. Petersons is survived by her sister-in-law Lidija Ciesnikes of Neenah, New York, died July 15 at Crestview Healthcare Center in Brownsville. He was a World War II Army veteran, an Episcopalian, and a board member of Elizabeth Arden, Reid & Prince of Worcester, MA, and Barbizon Corp of Florida.
She was born Nina Kathleen Jaquess on July 6, 1920, the daughter of the late Cranmer Augustus and Lelabelle Jaquess. She graduated from Tunica High School and attended Illinois, where he was a senior executive. John Carver, Sr. died in 1968 following a lengthy illness. Kathleen later married George William Wynne of Gallatin, TN. Mr. Wynne died in 1988.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, a donation be sent to the Sun City Center Hospice, 1647 Sun City Center, Suite 104, Sun City Center, FL 33573.
Walter Freeman Gray
Died: Sunday, June 09, 2002
Age: 71
Services for Walter Freeman Gray, Sr., 71, of Tunica were held on Wednesday, June 12, 2002, at 1 p.m. at Tunica United Methodist Church, with burial in Memorial Gardens in Clarksdale, MS. Rev. Doug Hardin officiated at the services.
Mr. Gray, a salesman for Mississippi State College for Women, and received an accounting degree from Memphis State University. She was an avid gardener and world traveler. One of her many interests was a love of fine art.
Mrs. Williams is surived by her husband Troy Williams; three daughters, Mary Evelyn Rea of Memphis, TN, Carol Ann Devereaux of Dallas, TX, and Carolyn Hicks of Wilmington, TX; and four grandchildren, Ali and Beth Corban of Rolling Fork and Mary Katherine and Nelson Corban of Green ville.
Pallbearers were Joe Buckley, Dennis Buckley, Bob Workman, Keith Smith, Baskin Perry, Ryan Grayson, Clark Carter, and James Geoghegan.
Memorials may be made to the Rolling Fork United Methodist Church of the Sharkey-Issaquena Hospital.
William Hugh Swindoll
Died: Saturday, September 29, 2001
Age: 64
Services for William Hugh Swindoll, 64, of Tunica were held on at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, October 2, 2001, at Eudora Baptist Church in Eudora, MS, with burial in Goodrum Cemetery there. Rev. Jim Brantley, Rev. Steve Albonetti, and Rev. James Spencer officiated at the services.
Mr. Swindoll, a farmer, died Sept. 29 at Tunica Convalescent Center. He had served in the U.S. Army.
Mr. Swindoll is surived two daughters, Tina Cooper of Phoenix , ArZ and Kathy Stewart of Coldwater, MS; one son, William Hugh Swindoll of Hernando, MS; two sisters, Violet Fields of Starkville, MS and Carrie Williams of Arlington, Mississippi, where he completed a pharmacy degree. Shortly after, he served in the U.S. Army in Korea and then began a long career in sales for Gorham Silver and Reed and Barton throughout the Southeast. He was a past officer in the 24K Club and the Southern Jewelers Trade Association.
Mr. Yarbrough is survived by his wife Sally Yarbrough of Atlanta; two daughters, Dabney Yarbrough Kentner and Margaret Yarbrough Friedman, both of Atlanta; one son, Walker Yarbrough, also of Atlanta; a brother, Henry Yarbrough of Shreveport, LA; and two grandchildren.
