H.W. 'Dub' Barlow
Richland
H.W. "Dub" Barlow, 78, died Feb. 17 at Hospice Ministries after a courageous battle with cancer.
Services were held Feb. 19 at First United Methodist Church in Richland, with burial following in Harrisville Cemetery in Simpson County. The Rev. Larry Patrick officiated.
A native of Simpson County, Mr. Barlow was a longtime resident of Richland. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, where he served as a trustee for many years. He graduated from Harrisville High School in 1944 and immediately joined the United States Navy, serving his country from 1944-1946. He retired from Colonial Baking Company in 1985 after 28 years of service. He later worked for McCarty Holman Bakery until his retirement in 1998. He then worked with the Rankin County School District for five years.
Mr. Barlow loved the outdoors and was an avid gardener. He was a dedicated sports fan of SEC football, as well as Atlanta Braves baseball. Dub will be remembered by his family as a kind and gentle Christian, a loving father and grandfather. His great faith was an inspiration to all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents, J.D. and Ola Bridges Barlow; brothers, Ralph Barlow and P.D. Barlow; sisters, Ruby McGill, Ethel Shivers, Audrey Rhodes and Geraldine "Snooky" Heim.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Peggy Barlow; son, Carl Barlow and wife Susan of Baton Rouge; daughter, Pat Stingley of Richland; grandchildren, John Yoakum, Tracey Yoakum, Anna Yoakum, all of Richland, and Jennifer Barlow of Baton Rouge; sisters, Louise Neely of Brandon, Jimmie Sue Furlow and husband Austin Furlow of Florence; and numerous nieces and nephews. Active pallbearers were John Yoakum, Justin Dillard, Ralph Barlow, Jay Barlow, Jerry Barlow and Jack McGill, Jr. Honorary pallbearers were Roy Williams, Leroy Wilson, Keith McClendon and Austin Furlow.
The family would like to thank Hospice Ministries and its nursing staff, and the team of doctors at St. Dominic Hospital, Dr. James Johnston, Dr. Robert Myers, Dr. James Crosthwait, Dr. Anne Whitehurst, Dr. Steve Patterson, Dr. Van Lackey and Dr. David Westbrook, for all their diligence and compassion.

John W. Wigal
Whitfield
John W. Wigal, 76, died March 27 at Jaquith Nursing Home in Whitfield.
Funeral services were held April 1 at Baldwin-Lee Funeral Home Chapel in Pearl, with burial at Lakewood Memorial Park.
Mr. Wigal was retired from the US Air Force and the US Postal Service. He attended Lighthouse Baptist Church in Richland, and had been a Scout leader for 27 years. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Rebecca Ann Wigal.
Survivors include his wife, Maxine Wigal of Richland; son, John Wigal of Richland; brothers, Cline Mitchell Wigal of California; sisters, Mae McEldowney and Flo Dean, both of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.
A gathering of friends and family was held April 2 at Chancellor Funeral Home of Byram, with a memorial service in the funeral home chapel.
Mr. Walsh was the son of W.R. and Elnora Walsh. A 1966 graduate of Forest Hill High School, Mr. Walsh went on to graduate from Hinds Community College, where he was captain of the football team and an all-conference center. He received a full football scholarship to Calif.
Al Joseph "Joey" McKay, Jr., 43, died March 10 in Los Angeles.
Services were held March 14 at Beverly Hills Presbyterian Church. Dr. Vahe Simonian and Dr. James Morrison officiated. Gates Kingsley and Gates Moeller Murphy Funeral Directors were in charge of arrangements. Interment was at Johnson Cemetery in Crystal Springs for immediate family.
Mr. McKay was a native of Rankin County and had lived in Mississippi Department of Transportation. He was a 1954 graduate of Forest Hill High School. He served in the Army National Guard, was an avid fisherman and was a member of Park Hill Baptist Church.
He is survived by his daughters, Terri Stark and Laura Jo Smith of Byram, Jo Lynne Eure of Pearl and Stacy Easley of Florence; his mother, Helen Barrett McMurtrey of Pearl; brothers, Arlyn Barrett of Crystal Springs and Dwayne Barrett of Brandon; sisters, Ann Beverly of Terry and Linda Phillips of Pearl; and grandchildren, Chris Lewis, Joshua and Casey Eure, and Hannah and Jason Smith.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association and the American Lung Association.
Vernia Mae Ruth
Florence
Mrs. Vernia Mae Ruth, 62, died March 20 at her home.
Services were held March 22 at the Florence Church of God, with burial in the Florence City Cemetery. Rev. Ed Hauser officiated.
Mrs. Ruth had been a resident of the Florence area for the past 25 years, moving there from Jackson. She was a member of the Florence Church of God. Mrs. Ruth loved to work for the Lord and take care of people.
She is survived by her son, Leonard Roberts of Harvest, Ala.; daughters, Vicky Brown of Florence and Margaret Jones of Brandon; foster children, My-y Steege of Dothan, Ala., Tuy-Anh Duong of Brandon and Kim Underwood of Pearl; brothers, Robert Hillhouse of Spokane, Wash., Alvis Hillhouse of Florence and Guy Hillhouse of Petal; sisters, Diann Carraway of Brandon, Maurine Garrison of Petal and Lorene Hamilton of Hernando; and six grandchildren.

Gladys Dooley White
Brandon
Gladys White, 68, died March 14 at Rankin Medical Center in Brandon.
Services were held March 16 at Chancellor Funeral Home Chapel in Florence, with burial in White Cemetery in Brandon. Rev. Beth Miller officiated.
Mrs. White was born in Lauderdale County and was a member of Monterey United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Martin and Ruby Pierce Dooley; two brothers, Charles Henry Dooley and Ellis Dooley; and a sister, Ruth Sanders.
Mrs. White is survived by her sister, Annette Cagle of Pearl; brothers, Martin E. Dooley of Collinsville and Maurice P. Dooley of Braxton; nieces, Amanda Cooper and Angela Cagle; and nephews, Joe and Tim Sanders, Robbie Allen, Martin Dooley III and Jeffrey Dooley.
William Joseph 'BJ' Hemphill Sr.

William Joseph "BJ" Hemphill, Sr., 57, died March 19 at Meadow Crest Hospital in Gretna, La.
Funeral services were held March 23 at Ott and Lee Funeral Home in Brandon, with burial in Floral Hills Cemetery in Pearl.
Mr. Hemphill was born in Jackson and had lived in Brandon for the past 17 years. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force.
He is survived by his fiance, Paulette Barnhardt of Brandon; one daughter, Ashley Hemphill; two sons, Williams Joseph Hemphill Jr. of Brandon and Jonathon Russell Hemphill of Gulfport; two sisters, Rebecca A. Presley of Brandon and Cynthia H. Wagner and husband Alan of Shreveport, La.; and four grandchildren, Natlie Makayla Lundy Hemphill, Adam Case Jordan and Kristen Ashley Beckham.
William T. (W.T.) Bridges
Brandon
William T. (W.T.) Bridges, 72, died March 20 at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland.
Services were held March 23 at Ott and Lee Funeral Home in Brandon, with burial in Brandon Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Bridges was a native of Jefferson Davis County and a longtime resident of Rankin County. He was a member of Park Place Baptist Church, where he had served as a deacon and a former member of the sanctuary choir. Mr. Bridges was a graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi, retiring in 1991. One of Mr. Bridges' favorite things to do was to go back to his home county of Jefferson Davis and visit with relatives and friends.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Bonita Bridges of Brandon; sons, Spence Bridges and his wife Marion of Madison, and Chad Bridges and his wife Leigh of Hazlehurst; grandchildren, Will and Mollie Bridges of Madison; and brother, Grover Bridges of Magee.

Scott Whitley
Richland
Scott Whitley, 35, died March 22 at his home.
Funeral services were held March 24 at Baldwin-Lee Funeral Home in Pearl, with burial in Edwards Cemetery.
Mr. Whitley attended First Baptist Church of Richland and was preceded in death by his mother, Donna Jean Allen Whitley, and his grandfather, Walter Whitley.
Survivors include his father and step-mother, Billy and Brenda Whitley of Vicksburg; children, Richard Scott (Scotty) Whitley, Marlee Alexis Merritt and Lindsay Briana Merritt and their mother, Melissa Merritt Whitley, all of Florence, Olivia Cecile Whitley and her mother, Amanda Cecile Lester of Richland, Kayla Marie Whitley and her mother, Rebecca Dedmon of Florence, and Ashley Danielle Higginbotham and her mother, Lisa Marie Higginbotham of Richland; a brother, Robert Whitley and his wife Lynn of Pearl; and grandparents, Alice Whitley of Edwards and Mary Dell Shipp of Pearl.
David Alan Woodmansee
Richland
David Alan Woodmansee died at his home March 21, just a few weeks past his thirty-fourth birthday.
Funeral services were held March 24 at Baldwin-Lee Funeral Home in Pearl, with burial in Glenwood Memorial Park.
David was a long-time resident of the Richland/Florence area. He attended public schools in Richland except for one year, 1988-1989, when he attended school in Laurel and was known by his friends as "Rocky." When the family moved back to the Richland/Florence area, David attended and graduated from the Education Center of Jackson in 1991.
David was a truck driver by trade and amazed his mother with tales of driving down the noisy, crowded streets of Manhattan in Texas; his maternal uncle, Milton Ray Copeland of Longview, Texas; and his dear cousin, Mr. Kenneth Paul (Kenny Paul) Benefield of Buras, La.
David is survived by his father, Lyle Bernard "Woody" Woodmansee, and his mother, Elizabeth (Beth) Copeland Woodmansee of Florence. He also takes leave of his "big sister" Judith Ann (Judi) Woodmansee Phillips; his brother-in-law, David Todd Phillips and his four-month-old niece, Haley Noelle Phillips of Vandergrift, Penn. He delighted in his sister's family and was very proud of his little niece.
David is also survived by his uncle, Glen Wayne (Uncle G.W.) and aunt, Elaine Brightwell Woodmansee; his aunt, Mrs. Carolyn Woodmansee Brightwell; James Wallace (Uncle Butch) Copeland and aunt, Nancy Griffin Copeland, all of Kilgore, Texas, his uncle, Bobby Benefield, and aunt, Carolyn Copeland Benefield, of Buras, La.; and many cousins, second cousins and many friends.

Dr. Paul Edwards
Brandon
Dr. Paul Edwards, 73, died April 4 at St. Dominic Memorial Hospital in Jackson.
Memorial services were held April 5 at Ott and Lee Funeral Home in Brandon.
Dr. Edwards was a native of Rankin County and had been a resident of Brandon for the past eight years. He was a Methodist. Dr. Edwards was a graduate of Millsaps College and the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Dr. Edwards later taught at Wood College in Mathiston. He was a Korean War Army veteran and was selected Soldier of the Month while serving in Iceland. He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul E. and Ruth Edwards, and a granddaughter, Kristy Newell.
Survivors include his wife, Sara Edwards of Brandon; two daughters and sons-in-law, "Sam" South and Bill of Brandon, and Kim Winters and Robert of Oxford; two sons and daughters-in-law, Paul Lee Edwards and Linda of Meridian and Guy Edwards and Marsha of Ridgeland; sister, Ruth Griffis of Albuquerque, N.M.; nine grandchildren, Jeff Newell, Aaron Edwards, Joshua Edwards, Lucy Tillman, Brittany, Jessica, Abygail and Sara South, and Paul Bradley Winters; and two great-grandchildren, Peyton and Mylea.
