Grover Carl Sanders
Funeral services for Grover Carl Sanders will be held on Monday, Sept. 8 at 10:30 a.m. at Welch Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Steve Huber and Rev. Wayne Sanders will officiate. Visitation will be held on Sunday, Sept. 7 from 4:30-7 p.m. at Welch Funeral Home. Burial will be at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery.
Henry Stewart
MACON -- Funeral services for Henry Stewart will be held at noon Sunday at Woodlawn C.M.E. Church of Macon. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pastor Elder Westley Hubbard will officiate.
Visitation will be held from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday at Carter's Funeral Services. Pallbearers include nephews.
Mr. Stewart died on Saturday, July 31, 2004, at Noxubee General Hospital. He was 69. He was born Oct. 10, 1935, in Macon. He was a construction worker. He was a member of Woodlawn C.M.E. Church and chairman of the Steward Board.
Survivors include his wife, Virgie Rean Tate of Macon; one son, Tony Tate of Macon; two daughters, Geneva and Latoria Tate, both of Macon; one brother, Emmitt Stewart of St Louis, Mo.; six sisters, Levoria Meadows of St. Louis, Mo., Katie B. Latham of Macon and Minnie Jones, Carlos Cross, Alberta Graham and Lilia Gillespie, all of Chicago, Ill.; and four grandchildren.
Mr. Stewart was preceded in death by his parents, Edward Stewart and Annie Showers Stewart.
The church bridge is out. There will be Blue Balloon Markers on Highway 388 and Prairie Point Road for alternate directions to the church.
Florence Ida Wright Shillingsburg
Florence Ida Wright Shillingsburg, 93, died on November 18 in Denton, Mississippi State University and has been a member of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity and Mississippi Electric Power Association, Farmers Grain Terminal, Yazoo County Farm Bureau, Yazoo Community Action, Yazoo County Board of Education (serving as president), Yazoo Planters Gin Company (of which he was a co-founder and president for many years). In addition, he was "One of One Hundred Leaders" in helping to create Delta Wildlife.
In 1984 he received the "Award for Outstanding Contributions to Cotton Ginning" from Delta Council. He was a delegate for the National Cotton Council and a past president of Mississippi State University, P.O. Box 9760, Texas; grandsons, Leonard Tyler Harris, Austin Cole Harris, and Donald Mississippi State University transportation department and a Baptist church member.
Survivors include his wife, Ethel D. Vaughn of Starkville; three daughters, Mary Etta McGee (John) of Glenarden, Md., Julia Hudson of Bowie Md., and Linda Hampton (Calvin) of Louisville; two sons, James Lester Vaughn (Gloria) of Bedford Heights, N.Y., and Gloria Davis, Hattie Wilkins, Mary Martin and Daisy White, all of Columbus; one brother, Jessie Ross Jr.; 13 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, two adopted children Angela and Jeffrey White of Columbus.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jessie Ross and Luella Johnson; her husband, Sid White, and four brothers, Ollie J. Ross, Roosevelt Ross, Rev. James Ross, Robert Ross.
Jack Myers
Jack Myers, 88, died at the University Hospital in Lexington on May 24, 2004.
Funeral services were held May 26 at First Baptist Church of Durant with burial in Mizaph Cemetery.
Mr. Myers retired from Mississippi Department of Transportation for 25 years, Mr. Harrison died Oct. 24 of heart failure at Promise Care Center in Vicksburg.
He is survived by his parents, Billy and Francis Harrison of Yazoo City; and one brother, Carl Douglas Harrison of Yazoo City
Thomas Walker “Tom” Shipp
Thomas Walker “Tom” Shipp, 51, of Bentonia, died Oct. 21 of heart failure at his residence.
Funeral services were Oct. 25 at Stricklin-King Funeral Home. Burial followed at Glenwood Cemetery.
The Revs. David Humphreys and Roger Richardson officiated.
A member of Benton United Methodist Church and an entrepenuer, Mr. Shipp is survived by his wife, Sandra Shipp; one son, Dave Shipp of Bentonia; one daughter, Megan Shipp of Bentonia; and one brother, Dan S. Shipp of Basalt, Mississippi Coast in 1966.
He is survived by his wife of 18 years, Sharon Newton; mother June Newton of Gautier; three sons: Benjamin Patrick Newton of Pascagoula, Jeffery Lavelle Newton of Mobile, Ala., and Jacques Groleau of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; one daughter-in-law,Tammi Newton of Gautier; five sisters: Joann Slater of Houston, Woods Jr.
Funeral services for Jessie Miller Calif.; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ideal Britt.
Services were June 23 at Philadelphia Baptist Church with the Rev. Donnie Stewart officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Kermit Worthy, Keith Crenshaw, David Burton, Brent Powell, Bryan Britt and Walter Miller.
Oliver Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
J.K. 'Jake' Cooper
J.K. "Jake" Cooper, 85, of Mathiston died June 30, 2003, at Calhoun Health Services Nursing Home in Calhoun City.
Mr. Cooper was born in Webster County on Sept. 27, 1917. He was a retired truck driver and a member of First United Methodist Church at Mathiston.
Survivors include four sons, Raymond Cooper, Jackie Cooper and Joey Cooper, all of Mathiston, and Mike Cooper of Ocean Springs; two sisters, Nell Huffman and Alice Colburn of West Point; five brothers, Bobby Cooper, Riley Cooper, Kenneth Cooper and Rodney Cooper, all of Eupora, and Jimmy Cooper of Ann Arbor, Mich.; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Cooper.
Services were July 2 at Oliver Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Charles White officiating. Burial was in Clarkson Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Terry Stidham, Jamie Stidham, Richard L. Arnold, Tommy Dobbs, William McComb, Dempsey Blanton, Ira Williams, Junior Monts and Mike Adams.
Noah Cox
Noah Cox, 87, died July 5, 2003, at his residence in Eupora.
Mr. Cox, a retired painter and farmer, was born in Choctaw County on Jan. 26, 1916. He was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy in Eupora.
Survivors include his wife, Bartelle Rowe Cox of Eupora; four daughters, Barbara Cox Danciger of Memphis, Tenn. Sue Cox Hanes of Scottsville, Ky., Brenda Cox Quisenberry of Southaven and Angela Cox Cruise of Eupora; one sister, Mary Kathleen Cowart of Las Vegas; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Services were July 7 at Oliver Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Sam Edwards officiating. Burial was in Providence Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Othel Hester, Mike Lusk, Harold Rowe, Mike Moore, Calvin Crimm, Tim Rowe and Mike Lyle.
Honorary pallbearers were Cliff Browning, Larry Powell and George Salley.
