Rev. J.C. Christian
NETTLETON - The Rev. Jefferson Coleman Christian, 79, died Thursday, April 3, 2003, at his home in Nettleton. He was born April 21, 1923, in Itawamba County to the late Iris Moman and Maudell Black Christian. He was a graduate of Itawamba Agricultural High School, Wood Junior College, Mississippi Conference of the United Methodist Church Board of Ministry, Finance Committee, Board of Missions, and Board of Church Locations. He married Harriett Scarbrough in 1947 and later married Dorothy Poole in 1980.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at the E.E. Pickle Funeral Home with the Rev. John C. Moore and the Rev. Glyn Wiygul officiating. Burial will be in Haughton Memorial Park.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Poole Christian of Saltillo; a son, Charles Jefferson "Jeff" Christian of Covington, La.; three daughters, Connie Sue Christian Marion of Roswell, Ga., Harriett Catherine Christian McMahan of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Martha Gale Christian Nagle of Signal Mountain, Tenn.; a sister, Madie Sue Christian Preston Christian, Bradley Nagle and Lee Nagle; a great-grandchild, Pace McConkle.
Pallbearers will be Chip Lawhorn, Robert Marion, Thompson and husband, David, of Mooreville; four grandchildren, Jenny Williams, Eric Williams, Crystal Williams and Jack Thornton; his special caregivers, Bob Brown and Charles Turner.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; an infant daughter, Dinah Hope Thornton; and three sisters.
Pallbearers will be Dale Swan, Jerry Edwards, Jim Middleton, Tom Plunkett, Sherman Thornton, J.D. Stanford, Charles Turner, Terry Thornton and Jimmy Doyle Young.
Visitation will continue until service time today.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 919 N. Mississippi State University, where he was president of his senior class and a member of SAE Fraternity. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp from 1941-1947. He flew B-24s in the Pacific Theater during World War II and attained the rank of lieutenant colonel. He spent most of his life as a farmer and professional bird dog trainer at Smith Oaks Plantation near Artesia. He was known regionally and nationally as both a trainer and breeder of champion bird dogs.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at the Annunciation Church. Gunter & Peel Funeral Home of Columbus is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, June Riggs Wilburn; two children, Charles Smith Wilburn Jr. of Augusta, Ga., and Belle Frink of Madison, Wis.; two grandsons, Geoffrey and Mitchell Frink; a brother, Thomas Luther Wilburn of Artesia; a niece, Sandra Hudson of Tupelo; four nephews, Tommy and David Wilburn of Rhode Island, and Bill and Saunders Young of Texas - Bruce Kenneth Brinkley, 35, formerly of Booneville, died Tuesday, April 1, 2003, at the Brackenridge Trauma Center in Austin, Texas, and a Baptist. A true friend, he never met a stranger. His greatest pleasure, pride and passion were his children.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at McMillan Funeral Home Chapel in Booneville with Bro. Tommy Wilson officiating. Burial will be in Booneville Cemetery.
Survivors include his children, Haley Brinkley and Brent Brinkley, both of Austin, Texas; a brother, Ken Brinkley Jr. and wife, Shirley, of Ripley; three nephews; numerous aunts and uncles; the mother of his children, Polly Brinkley.
He was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth Brinkley.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today and until service time Sunday.
Malvin Jackson
BOONEVILLE - Malvin Q. Jackson, 78, died Friday, April 4, 2003, at his home. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Booneville Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Hugh Holstine
BATESVILLE - Hugh Roy Holstine, 71, died Thursday, April 3, 2003, at the North Mississippi to James Henry and Sadie Ray Denley Holstine. He was a retired truck driver.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Wells Funeral Home Chapel in Batesville with the Rev. Bobby Kounce officiating. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery in Batesville.
Survivors include his wife, Sarah Ruth Holstine of Batesville; three stepsons, Kenneth Goss of Southaven, Sandie Goss of Pope and David Goss of Batesville; two brothers, Jessie Holstine and Charles Holstine, both of Laredo, Alabama, a homemaker and a member of New Mt. Carmel Baptist Church.
Services will be at 4:30 p.m. today at New Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Hodges, Ala., with Bro. Tony Wood officiating. Burial will be in New Mt. Carmel Cemetery. Deaton Funeral Home of Red Bay, Ala., is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include a sister, Earlene Akers of New Braunfels, Mississippi Medical Center Women's Hospital in Tupelo.
Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. today at Guinn Cemetery with the Rev. Tommy Inmon officiating. Browning Funeral Home of Pontotoc is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include his parents; a brother, Haley Collums of Toccopola; his grandparents, Joann Collums, and Leon and Polly McCarver.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Collums, and his grandfather, Purvis Collums.
Herman Berthay
SALTILLO - Herman Berthay, 83, died Wednesday, April 2, 2003, at the North Mississippi Department of Transportation. He was a member of Euclatubba Baptist Church for more than 70 years. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed playing dominoes.
Services will be at 1 p.m. today at Euclatubba Baptist Church with Dr. John Hearn and Bro. Scott Witcher officiating. Burial will be in the Euclatubba Cemetery. Waters Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Kathleen Berthay of Tupelo; a sister, Helen Bolen of Tupelo; a brother, Quitman Berthay and his wife, Minnie, of Saltillo; a sister-in-law, Betty Pannell of Sherman; a brother-in-law, Willard McBrayer and wife, Shirley, of Blue Springs; a special niece, Corrine Calvasina of Jacksonville, Fla.; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Lula Berthay; a sister, Ruby Bolen; and four brothers, B. Berthay, W.D. Berthay, Guy Berthay and Johnny Berthay.
Pallbearers will be Glen Posey, Johnny Cox, Glen Williams, Brian McDivitt, Chris Parker, Larry Campbell, O'Neil Murphy, Wayne Dixon, Danny Roper, Brian Grammer and Teddy Bridges.
Honorary pallbearers will be Prentiss Turner, Flavous Murphy, Gene Spearman, Larry Hutcheson and Bro. Felix Hutcheson.
The body will lie in state at the church from noon to service time today.
Chester Dawson
TISHOMINGO - Chester Dawson, 79, died Friday, April 4, 2003, at the Iuka Hospital. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Cutshall Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home in Iuka.
Eddie Garrett
HAMILTON - Edd Randle "Eddie" Garrett, 42, died Thursday, April 3, 2003, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle in Columbus. A lifelong resident of Monroe County, he was born Nov. 16, 1960, to the late E.D. and Liddie Guin Garrett. He was a farmer and a member of the Church of God.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at the Tisdale-Lann Memorial Chapel in Aberdeen with the Rev. Steve Blaylock officiating. Burial will be in the Egger Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Rebecca and Lippman Garrett of Hamilton; a sister, Dola Mae Edwards and husband, Johnny, of Vernon, Ala.; nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be William J. Lippman, Maurice Lippman, David Pate, Mike Guin, Lonnie Lee and Sonny Marlowe.
Dorothy Bledsoe
SHANNON - Dorothy Louise Bledsoe, 72, died Friday, April 4, 2003, at Beverly Healthcare-Briar Ridge in Tupelo after a long illness. She was born June 24, 1930, in Charleston. She was a retired certified nursing assistant at Beverly Healthcare. She was a Christian. She enjoyed cooking, spending time with her family and taking care of her dog, Maggie.
A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Tupelo Community Church with Bro. Mississippi Medical Center. He was a member of Campbell Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Bolivar, Tenn., and a graduate of Bolivar High School in Bolivar, Tenn. He was a retired employee of Campbell Soup Company in Chicago. He was a farmer and a Mason.
Services will be at 1 p.m. today at the Susie L. Darden Memorial Chapel at Darden and Sons Funeral Home of Amory with the Rev. Junious McTivic officiating. Burial will be in the New Prospect Cemetery at Nettleton.
Survivors include a daughter, Ruth Britt of Wren; a brother, Aljernon Lloyd of Wren; two sisters, Verlee Jones of Middleton, Tenn., and Martha (Albert) Lloyd of Humboldt, Tenn.; one grandchild; one great-grandchild.
Ed Hall
CORINTH - Richard Edward "Ed" Hall, 80, died Thursday, April 3, 2003, at the Magnolia Regional Health Center. He was born July 28, 1923, in Tishomingo County to the late Garvin and Luda Alred Hall. He graduated from Burnsville School. He was drafted by the U.S. Army, then later transferred to the U.S. Air Force, serving on Guam during World War II. He was in the trucking business for a short time and a craftsman of woodworking for more than 55 years. He began his career as a contractor remodeling many Corinth landmarks such as historic homes and the courthouse. He later specialized in cabinetry and stayed active in his shop. He was an active member of West Corinth Baptist Church. He was a kind and gentle person.
Services will be at 11 a.m. today at McPeters Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Bill King and Bro. Leon Enzor officiating. Burial will be in Forrest Memorial Park Cemetery.
Survivors include a son, Richard "Rich" Hall and wife, Beth, of Collierville, Tenn.; a daughter, Pam H. Wimberly and husband, Larry, of Olive Branch; two brothers, Talmadge Hall of Jackson, Tenn., and Noel Hall of Starkville; two sisters, Betty Hall Adams of Glen and Dorothy Hall West of Houston, Mississippi Medical Center after a long illness. She was a native of Tupelo and a resident of the Auburn community most of her life. She was the Food Service manager for Tupelo Public Schools, serving at both Tupelo High School and Thomas Street Elementary School. She organized the cafeteria/school kitchen at the new Tupelo High School. She sang in The Disciples Quartet for 12 years. She was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church.
Services will be at 3:30 p.m. Sunday in the Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with Minister Wayne Cox, Dr. Don Baggett and the Rev. Terry Ledbetter officiating. Burial will be in Mississippi Medical Center. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by N.L. Jones Funeral Directors of Tupelo.
Jo Margaret Barkley
SHANNON - Jo Margaret Barkley, 71, died Thursday, April 3, 2003, at the Pontotoc Hospital after a long illness. She was born Dec. 10, 1931, in Marks to the late Harrison and Sarah Douglas Ard. She was a resident of the Graceland Nursing Home in Pontotoc for the past 10 years. She was an active member of the Verona Church of God of Prophecy. She enjoyed quilting and knitting, and loved her family.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Lee Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Wayne Thorn officiating. Burial will be in Union Grove Cemetery.
Survivors include two sons, William "Thomas" Barkley and wife, Vickie, of Bruce, and Donnie Joe Barkley and wife, Stephanie, of Paris, Ohio, and joined Mt. Zion M.B. Church, where she was a member for 24 years and served on the Mother Board. In 1998 she moved to Detroit to live with her daughter and granddaughter, and became a member of Redford Free Methodist Church. She enjoyed reading the Bible, cooking and quilting.
Services will be at noon today at Mt. Zion M.B. Church in Toledo, Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo after a brief illness. She was born and reared in Macon, Mo. She lived most of her life in Green ville. She moved to Tupelo in 1998 and became a resident of the Mitchell Center at Traceway Retirement Community. She was an interior decorator and worked many years with the Senoj Furniture Company in Green ville. She was a longtime member of the Green ville First United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Randall Mississippi Medical Center. He was the retired owner of Guthrie Hunter Construction Company. He was a member and deacon of Mantee Baptist Church. He was a member of the Webster County School Board for 30 years. He was a U.S. Army Air Corp veteran of World War II.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Mantee Baptist Church with Dr. Ken Hester, the Rev. Mark Jones and the Rev. Terry Edwards officiating. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Mantee. Houston Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Gibson Hunter of Mantee; three daughters, Linda Stevens and husband, Jimmy, of Mantee, Becky Johnson and husband, Van, of Eupora, and Hope Lee and husband, David, of Hamilton; a sister, Jerry Smith of Henderson , Tenn.; three brothers, Wayne Hunter of Tupelo, Kilmer Hunter of Gulfport and Gene Scott Hunter of Houston, Mississippi Medical Center. He was born Nov. 30, 1928, in Franklin County, Ala., to the late Alvie and Nettie Mae Chambers Beasley. He was a retired truck driver and a member of the Fulton Church of Christ.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Senter Funeral Home Chapel with Minister Russ Crosswhite and Minister Jerene Fikes officiating. Burial will be in Harden Chapel Cemetry.
Survivors include his wife, Ramona Beasley of Fulton; a son, Keith Beasley of Fulton; two daughters, Kelly Taylor and husband, Larry, of Fulton, and Shelia Kendall of Winter Haven, Fla.; a sister, Kathy Emmerson of Vina, Ala.; two brothers, Hubert Beasley and Frank Beasley, both of Phil Campbell, Ala.; five grandchildren, April Beasley, Jessica Beasley, Michael Kendall, Ira Taylor and Josh Taylor.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Gene Beasley.
Pallbearers will be Shain Fowler, Larry Brown, Larry Strickland, Kerry Beasley, Greg Beasley, Jerome Peppers, Casey Beasley and David Summers.
Visitation will be from 5:30 to 8 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. to service time Sunday.
