Evelyn Marie Schaertl, 86
Evelyn Marie Schaertl, 86, passed away at Brendan House in Kalispell, on Oct. 10, 2000. She was born Aug. 9, 1914, in Red Granite, Wis., to Karl and Hilda Johnson Borgeson. She moved to the Bitterroot Valley as a small child and grew up in Stevensville. There, she helped out in the family tailor and dry cleaning business. She also farmed the area. She was an accomplished pianist and enjoyed reading poetry in English and Swedish. She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge and the Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by two husbands, J. Milton Brown and William F. Schaertl; parents, Karl and Hilda Borgeson; and a brother, Vernon Borgeson. Her survivors include a daughter, Carol Christman and her husband, Ronald, of Kalispell; sons, J. Russell Brown and wife, Jane, of Las Vegas, and William R. Schaertl of Hot Springs; granddaughters, Jaclyn Christman of Kalispell, Pamela Wittwer and husband, Jay, of Las Vegas; grandsons, Kevin Brown of Las Vegas, and Jason Christman of Greeneville, Thompson Falls High School. He was married to Marilyn Beck in 1959 and they had two children. He moved to the Flathead Valley in 1969. He started in the logging industry when he was 20 years old. He was an owner/operator of a self-loader logging truck. He won the World Championship Truck Driving in 1980 in Las Vegas. He loved the outdoors, boating, camping, and hunting. He was an avid bowler. He was an awesome "Pa-pa" and adored his grandchildren. He will be remembered for his canine companions and his truck, his favorite lunch, McDonald's Happy Meals, and his love and devotion to his family. His great love was for the woods and his work. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, David and Charles. He is survived by his wife, Jordice of Kalispell; his son, Wade Dudley of Bremerton, Wash.; his daughter, Madalyn Renee Crouch and her husband, Brian, of Missoula; three stepchildren, Laura, Ben Jr., and Justus; nine grandchildren; two brothers, Harry Jr. of Washington. There will be a non-formal potluck memorial luncheon at the North Valley Hospital Community Center on Nucleus Avenue in Columbia Falls on Sunday at noon for family and friends.
Thelma H. Fosse, 95
Thelma H. Fosse, 95, a long time resident of Great Falls, died April 21, 2001, at Immanuel Lutheran Home in Kalispell.
She was born Sept. 1, 1905, in Fairfax, Mo., where her parents farmed and ranched. The family moved to Osborne, Kan., in 1911, and to Montana, near the Pablo area in 1916. A basketball player, she graduated from Pablo High School in 1923, and studied business at Western Montana College in Dillon.
She married Theodore "Ted" Fosse on June 10, 1929. The couple met while she was the Polson Creamery office manager and he was teaching and coaching high school basketball in Polson.
They lived briefly in Chinook and Choteau while he was acting-county agent. They moved to Sidney in 1930 when he accepted the position of Richland County Extension Agent. In 1939, the couple moved to Great Falls where he was the Cascade County Extension Agent until his retirement in 1968.
She was a Cascade country 4-H leader for 15 years. She worked summers at the state fair in Great Falls as a clerk for judges in the 4-H department and as a cashier for the 4-H Chuck Wagon. She was a 50-year member of Eastern Star; a member of First Congregational Church in Great Falls; and active in the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.
Her interests included traveling, fishing, camping, gardening, raising flowers and violets, bridge, crafts, sewing, crocheting, knitting and tatting. She belonged to a local sewing club and bridge club for 50 years.
She was preceded in death by her son, Robert L. Fosse in 1986; her husband, Theodore "Ted" Fosse in 1991; and her sister, Mabel M. Lindsay in 1995. Following the death of her husband, she moved to Kalispell in 1991.
She is survived by her daughter Donna and husband, Ed Trippet, of Kalispell; daughter-in-law Jacqueline Fosse of Spokane; nine grandchildren, Linda Garnett of Conrad, Bruce Trippet of Minneapolis, Guy Fosse and Gary Fosse of Great Falls, Kathy Knechtges, Greg Fosse and Barb Sanders of Spokane, and Janet Braig and Ron Trippet of Kalispell; 15 great-grandchildren, two nieces and one nephew.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the First Congregational Church in Great Falls with the Rev. Jack Severns officiating. Burial will follow at the Highland Cemetery in Great Falls.
Memorials may be made to the Ted and Thelma Fosse Scholarship Fund at Montana State University, College of Agriculture, P.O. Box 182860, Room 204 Linfield Hall, Bozeman MT 59717; or to the charity of the donor's choice.
Arnold Reid Barta, 70
Arnold Reid Barta, 70, of Columbia Falls, passed away April 17, 2001, near his home on Middle Road.
He was born Feb. 9, 1931, near Ross Fork in Fergus County to Valerian and Florence Barta.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1953. He worked at a mine in Climax, Calif.; a brother-in-law, Bob Peres of Vaughn; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Shirley Peres.
A memorial service with a gathering of friends and family will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Kalispell Eagles Lodge, which he was a member.
Inurnment will be in the City Cemetery in Lewistown at a later date.
The family has suggested that memorials be made to the Bad Rock Fire Department, the Columbia Falls Ambulance, or to ALERT.
Columbia Mortuary in Columbia Falls is in charge of arrangements.
