At the young age of 16 he and a friend Kenneth Vick decided life was too slow around Opheim and they needed work so they jumped the freight train out of Opheim and went into North Dakota and got jobs with several threshing crews, then decided they had had enough so came back to Opheim. In Feb. of 1936 he took first place and received a 22 repeating rifle in the Opheim Rabbit Hunting Contest that was sponsored by the Opheim FFA. He turned in 4, 946 rabbit ears.
He farmed and ranched with his folks until he enlisted in to the Army on July 10, 1941 at Missoula, MT and served during World War II. He served in Algeria, French Morocco, Tunisia, Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, and South France Rhineland. He received the Purple Heart Medal at the 93D Evacuation Hospital. He was wounded November 5, 1943 in the Mediterranean Theater. He also won the European African Eastern Theater Service Medal, American Defense Service Medal, 5 Overseas Service Medals, Lapel Button and 4 Discharge Emblems. He departed from the USA 24 October 1942 to the North Atlantic Theater Operations and departed from France and arrived back in the USA 8 July 1945 and received his Honorable Discharge 17 July 1945 at Fort Snelling, Minnesota. He then returned to farm with his folks and then bought the homestead in 1948 when Jorgen and Manda retired to Opheim. He and his brothers, Melvin and Oscar hayed together until Melvin’s death and Oscar and Ingval farmed together most of their lives, raising cows, chickens, and horses. The brothers loved to break horses and all the families spent many fun days picking berries on brother Pete’s place and whenever they could get together to play horseshoe or cards.
Ingval married Hazel Margaret Johnson on October 30, 1949 at Glasgow, MT and they made their home on the Isakson homestead. They were later divorced.
Ingval belonged to the American Legion Post # 122 of Opheim and the Opheim Lutheran Church for many years. He enjoyed playing horseshoe, pinocchio, whist, and cribbage and would challenge any one and if you did not count your point’s right or played to slow he would warn you that he was going to take your points. Ingval was always ready to have an “Ole” beer with family and friends.
Ingval retired from the ranch and moved into Opheim and because of failing eye sight and hearing, he entered the Miles city Veterans Home and was there until his death. He sold his ranch to a great nephew Todd Westby in 1998 so the homestead is still in the family. His nephew James Westby lives in Miles City so he would visit Ingval often and take him out shopping and out for rides to pass the time by.
Ingval is survived by one son, Dennis of Billings, MT and two granddaughters, Tanisha McDuffie of Great Falls and Cheri Hutchinson of San Francisco, great grandson Chris McDuffie and great granddaughters Jessi and Skylar Hutchinson, and many nieces and nephews.
