KATHRYN LOUISE ‘KITTY LOU’ LANGEN
Kitty Lou Langen, 90, of Glasgow, MT. died of natural causes on Sept. 6, 2008 at Valley View Home.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 13 at 11:00 A.M at the First Congregational Church, 640 2nd Ave. North in Glasgow. All family and friends are invited to a reception in the church community room following a short Committal Service at Highland Cemetery.
Kitty Lou was preceded in death by her husband, Judge Leonard H. ‘Len’ Langen, in 2001. She is survived by her children, John, and his wife Gail of Las Vegas; Susan and her husband, Jerry Zieg, of Spokane; Eric, of Glasgow; and Peter, of Billings. She will also be greatly missed by her grandchildren; Mark and Johnna Langen and Anna and Ian Zieg and great grandchildren, Mallory and Jamie Langen and Jordan Langen.
Kitty Lou was born in 1918 in Richmond, Indiana to Herbert and Rhea Loper. It was there she began a life marked by intellectual curiosity, spiritual growth and humor.
After graduating from high school in Richmond at age 17, she went on to graduate cum laude from Wittenberg College in Springfield Ohio. By age 23 she had attained a master’s degree in retailing from New York University. Her path led her to Indianapolis, where she worked as a buyer for the L. S. Ayers & Co. Department store. It was during this time that she met Len. The year was 1942 and Leonard was a special agent with the FBI. They met on a blind date in March and were married less than 2 months later in May. It was the beginning of WWII and not a time to be indecisive. Kitty Lou sold war bonds during that time and later worked briefly in a war plant in Gary, Indiana.
Within a couple of years, the Bureau transferred Len to New York City. In 1944, while Len was following a Russian spy, Kitty Lou gave birth to John, their first born. After the tumultuous war years Montana, Len’s home state, seemed pretty inviting and the family transferred to Butte. Daughter Susan was born soon after the move. Kitty Lou became intrigued by the potential of a large empty lot in their neighborhood and after much research, she presented a proposal to the city for the creation of a park on the site. The little park became a reality and was known informally as Kitty Lou Park for several years until the name was officially made JFK Memorial Park.
Len resigned from the FBI after nearly 14 years with the Bureau and the family moved to Glasgow, Len's home town, in 1954. During that move, son Eric was born. While Len was starting a law practice, Kitty Lou was raising 3 children and expecting a fourth, Peter. The following decades were full of family and a variety of experiences. Kitty Lou provided tactical support for the family sheep business and was the navigator while Len piloted their small plane. She even took flight lessons so that she could land the plane in case of emergency. They shared many adventures in those early years, flying often to Mexico and other parts of the country.
Kitty Lou became active politically and in community affairs, becoming the first woman on the hospital board in Glasgow. She also served as a delegate to the Montana Constitutional Convention in the early 70's.
Kitty Lou was an active and devoted member of PEO and cherished the many friendships she made there. She was honored as a 50 year member and served as president several times. Her bridge club also played an important role in her life. She enjoyed playing in their tournaments and loved the lively and stimulating partners she always found.
The cabin she and Len owned at the Pines on Fort Peck Lake held a special place in Kitty Lou's heart. She was an avid lover of nature in all of its forms and especially enjoyed hiking. A life-long reader, Kitty Lou loved various types of fiction but also explored many subjects - from history and anthropology to metaphysics. Her many interests led to great discussions. She was a creative and compassionate human being, and we will all miss her loving presence. Our mother has left us with grateful hearts.
