Melissa Gerese Greenhagen, age 37, passed away on Saturday, January 17, 2009 in Glasgow, Montana.
Melissa was born on June 5th, 1971 in Glasgow, the daughter of Myrel and Mary Fischer.
On October 6th, 1991 she married Craig Greenhagen in Glasgow. They have been married 17 years and have four children, Quinton and Coby, age 16, Krissy age 15, and Craiger age 12.
Melissa was currently serving as Valley County Clerk of Court. She was on the board of the Fort Peck Theatre and was in many plays. She served in all areas of Hi-Line Youth Hockey, with the Boy Scouts as a Troop Committee Chair, Venture leader, Popcorn Colonel, Wood Badge Trained, Order of the Arrow, or Ordeal Member, with the Girl Scouts, soccer, and baseball. She was also active as an EMT, former Scottie Care Board Member, and active with Combined Campaign. She loved to sing, enjoyed camping, hiking, and hunting, and loved to have family gatherings.
She was a “care giver”, always thinking of others. Melissa said, “There’s always something good in everyone.” She always put her family first.
Missy was preceded in death by an infant brother and sister Michael Martin and Michelle.
Melissa (Fischer) Greenhagen is survived by her husband Craig, children Quinton,
Coby, Krissy and Craiger, all of the family home in Glasgow, her parents Myrel and Mary Fischer of Glasgow, her brother Mike Fischer and his wife Doreen and their children Errion and Garrith of Shakopee, Minnesota, father and mother-in-law Jerry and Betty Greenhagen of Glasgow, sister-in-law Lona of Glasgow, her children Jerami and Jarrett Brandt, Janson Palmer, Grandpa and Grandma Tony and Leonie (Babe) Pehan, numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

GLASGOW-Former Malta and Whitewater resident, Evelyn K. Brandt, 92 years, a retired teacher and librarian, died Wednesday, January 7 at a Glasgow nursing home of natural causes.
Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M., Saturday, January 10, at the Malta Lutheran Church. Interment will be in the Malta Cemetery. There will be a luncheon at the church following the services. Memorial may be made to the Malta Lutheran Church Kitchen Project or a charity of choice. Adams Kirkwood Funeral Home of Malta is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include her son, Jim (Diane) Brandt of Glasgow, grandsons, Matt Brandt of Billings, Dan Brandt of Glasgow; son-in-law, Dave Cleveland, granddaughter, Tonia (Bill) Sapa, great grandchildren, Haly, Lane, and Reggie Sapa all of Columbia Falls, grandson Chad Cleveland of Missoula.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband Robert Brandt in 2006, daughter, Karen Cleveland (2002), sister Alma Bolstead, brothers, Edgar Fossum and Robert Fossum.
Evelyn was born November 6, 1916 at Medicine Lake, Montana the daughter of Albert and Elise (Brue) Fossum. She graduated from Medicine Lake High School in 1934 and from Northern Montana College in 1939 with a Teaching Degree. She taught schools in Cut Bank, county schools near Reserve and Homestead in the 1940’s. She married Robert Brandt on June 6, 1948 in Plentywood, Montana. They lived in Whitewater from 1957 until 1970 where their children were raised. She worked at the county and high school library. In 1970 Bob and Evelyn moved to Malta where she worked as the County Librarian until they both retired in 1980. Bob and Evelyn moved to Kalispell for a short time until moving to Glasgow in 2002. One of her highlights in life was going to college as she had many pictures of her girlfriends and herself at the dorm and taking trips to the mountains. She maintained their friendship and still kept in contact with some of her classmates. Evelyn enjoyed cooking, baking and canning vegetables from Bob’s garden. Always raised flowers in her yard and took pride in her house plants.

Merrill Earl Johnston, 81, died Wednesday morning at Valley View Home of natural causes.
Merrill Earl Johnston was born to George Ralph Johnston and Iva May Johnston (Woodcock) in Brockway, MT. May 12, 1927 the youngest of 4 children.
Merrill was inducted into the army in January of 1951 under active status until December of 1952. He was then transferred to the army reserve, where he served until he was honorably discharged in August of 1956.
Merrill married Louise Nagel October 13th 1953 in Miles City, MT. Merrill worked on several different ranches enjoying the cowboy life. He went to work on the Owen Funk Ranch at Hinsdale, MT. in 1965 and stayed there till 1974. They then moved into Glasgow with Merrill working at the stockyards and Louise nursing at the hospital. He then started doing private contract work branding, calving, testing, and vaccinating with large ranches around the Glasgow area. He enjoyed having his sons work with him and eventually their wives also. When Merrill could no longer get on a horse he turned to a 3-wheeler to get the job done.
Merrill was a man of few words but you wanted to be listening when he did speak, for they were either words of wisdom or witty words that made everyone laugh. He liked to put on a gruff cowboy exterior, but had a soft tender heart, as many of you know.
After Louise’s passing Merrill seem to loose the sparkle in his eye. He retired from the ranching staying in Glasgow and in 2004 the doctors suggested he have some assisted living. Prairie Ridge became his new home until June of 2007 when he needed to move to Valley View.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 33 years Louise Johnston (Nagel) and siblings Jack Johnston and Annette Mothershead.
Survivors include Sister Todd Miller of Kalispell, special friend Jane Hide of Glasgow; two sons Brady Johnston and his fiancé Nancy of Forsyth and Brian Johnston and his wife Becki of Hinsdale; four grandchildren, Jessica and Ben Johnston of Houston, Texas, Jake Johnston of Sheridan, Wyoming, Jodie Johnston of Missoula, and Bodel Johnston of Hinsdale.

Gladys was born in Glasgow and lived in Nashua, Ekalaka, Bainville, and San Diego.
She graduated from the University of Montana in Missoula and Northern Montana College in Havre. She also attended classes in Missoula and Bozeman and Northwest Nazarene in Idaho.
She served in the U.S. Army Air Force as a Teletype Operator from 1942 to 1945 in World War II in San Diego.
Gladys married Eugene Naasz on July 2, 1960 in Glasgow, Montana. They lived in Flowing Wells, Libby, Colstrip, Nashua, and Glasgow. She was employed as a social case worker and elementary school teacher for 14 years in Montana, Idaho and Washington. She was a writer under the pen name of Rachel Rivers and won the honor of titling the Valley County History Book now known as “Footprints In The Valley”. She was active with the MIA Writers Group in Libby and ran for the State Legislature in Libby, Montana.
Gene and Gladys were lifetime members of the Nashua Senior Citizens, and were Nashua’s 1998 Sr. Citizens of the Year. She was a member of the Nashua Lions Club, Toastmasters Club, and was active in the Joy Fellowship Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and three brothers; Lewis (Fod) Hill, Iner Hill, and Walter Hill.

Charles “Chuck” J. Miller Jr.
Charles “Chuck” J. Miller Jr., age 79, passed away in Billings on December 27th, 2008, after courageously battling complications following heart surgery.
Chuck was born in Glasgow on August 5th, 1929, to Charles Sr. and Marie (Blomer) Miller, the first of three children. At an early age, he began working on the family farm north of Glasgow, and continued farming after graduating from Glasgow High School in 1948.
He married Beth McNeil in December 1951, and they made their home north of Cherry Creek, where they lived for 57 years. They were blessed with eight children, 20 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was very proud of his family, especially his children’s and grandchildren’s accomplishments, and was an enthusiastic fan of their sports activities. He was kind and generous, and had a passion for helping others who were less fortunate.
In his younger years, Chuck enjoyed getting together with friends to dance, hunt, fish, and play cards. He was an avid reader, creative inventor and handyman, mechanic and welder. There was nothing he couldn’t fix. He enjoyed gardening in his later years, which stemmed from his love of good food and working outside. He was a Lakers fan and loved to visit with neighbors who stopped by. He was outspoken about things he believed in and enjoyed a good debate. He was an extraordinary storyteller and his grandchildren loved to listen to him for hours on end.
Chuck was an active member in the community, starting as an altar boy at a young age at St. Raphael’s Church. He later served on the school board at St. Raphael’s School and was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Elks. He contributed much through his work at the ASCS office and his membership on the County Committee, elevator board and Farmers Union Oil Co. board.
Chuck is survived by his wife, Beth; sister Jean (Lloyd) Norby; daughter Charla (Dennis) Guidice (Tracie, Tyler and Tauni; Rob and Kiera); daughter Kelleen (Kirk) Menge (Anne and Kara; Chris and Amy, Gavin, Emma and Jacob; Sheree and Brett, Kennon and Joey); son David Miller; daughter Lesley (Dan) Strausbaugh (Aaron; Jamie and Shannon, Madisen, McKinzie and Marcus); daughter Heidi (Terry) Caekaert (Pat, Jeff, Betsy, Sam and Eli); son Matthew (Lynn) Miller (CJ, Jordan, Zach, Ben, and Bergen); son Joe Miller; and son Nate (Leah) Miller (Vaughn and Tessa).
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Marie Miller, and his sister Tracy Wiltfong.
A celebration of Chuck’s life will be held in Glasgow in the spring.
