MORTUARY IN CHARGE: Bell Mortuary of Glasgow, MT
BORN: January 18, 1907
PARENTS: William and Elizabeth Uphaus
Clara Rose Uphaus Anderson was born January 18, 1907 in Danforth, Illinois. Her father nicknamed her “Toots” after a popular song. Rose was the middle child in her family with 6 brothers and 2 sisters. They moved briefly to Church’s Ferry, North Dakota in 1911. The homestead SW of Glasgow on Brazil Creek was filed on in 1912. They moved down Brazil Creek to the Mahon Hoyt ranch in 1924. Rose was married to Bill Anderson in 1941 and they lived on Timbercreek in south Valley Co. There they raised their three children: Rose (l946), McKee (l948), and Mary (1952). Rose and Bill divorced in 1967 and Rose moved to Pullman, Washington. Mary finished high school there. Rose, McKee, and Mary all hold degrees from Washington State University. While in Washington Rose cooked for some Catholic fathers, did housekeeping for an elderly lady, and worked at a golf course-sometimes all at the same time. At other times she cooked at dude ranches. This was necessary so she could receive social security in her retirement years.
Rose was preceded in death by her parents William and Elizabeth Uphaus and the following siblings and their spouses-Ray Uphaus; Roy (Ann and Mary Alice) Uphaus; Mary (Sherm) Harvey; Lester (Hazel) Uphaus; Em (Lainy) Uphaus; William Uphaus; Richard (Grace) Uphaus; and Bert Gines. She was also preceded in death by two special nephews, Sammy Gines and Ron Uphaus and a special friend, Helen Tourtlelot. Rose suffered a miscarriage during the hard winter of 1949 and 50 and buried her baby on her own birthday January 18, 1950.
Rose is survived by her children Rose (Ron) Stoneberg, McKee Anderson, and Mary (Tom Lovas) Anderson. Rose is survived by grandchildren Sierra (Jason) Holt, Sylvan (Bob) Walden, Amber Anderson, Ayden and Axton Anderson. Rose’s sister Merla Gines of Renton Washington survives, as do sister-in-laws Lodie (Ray) and Gerry (William) Uphaus, both of Glasgow. Bill’s brother Jack (Betty) Anderson of Everett Washington also survive.
Rose Uphaus Anderson was a true pioneer lady. She came to MT to live on their homestead at age 6. She was the only child to attend all eight grades at the Brazil Creek School. After they moved closer to town she attended Glasgow High School. Rose always loved animals and the outdoors. She ran a trapline (predators like chickens) with her father and helped hand milk the family dairy cows. Rose delivered milk and eggs to Glasgow by team and wagon and cooked in the horse drawn cook car that accompanied her father’s threshing machine.
Rose and Timbercreek Bill Anderson crossed the Missouri River (now part of Fort Peck Lake) on horseback and were married at Jordan MT on June 14, 1941.
After her marriage Rose lived in the log home on the Josephine Anderson homestead on Timbercreek. There was no electricity or telephone during the years Rose and Bill raised their family. Drinking water was dipped from potholes or hauled from neighbor’s wells. Eventually a well producing bitter alkali water was drilled and piped to the house for cleaning purposes. The access road was not raised and graveled until after Rose left the ranch. Money was short so Rose raised bum lambs and turkeys for cash.
The good dogs she trained helped her keep the small livestock safe. Her expertise with a gun helped, too. Rose told of once waiting until 3 sagehens walking to water lined up so that only one precious bullet was expended. Chickens and a big garden contributed to family meals. Trips to town were sometimes 6 weeks apart so with no deep freeze Rose’s famous fried chicken was a summer staple. In winter the garage was the deep freeze and Rose would saw one meal at a time off the frozen venison hanging there. The dirt cellar under the log house was full of home-canned meat and vegetables.
Rose excelled at school and always wished she went on to teach. At the time she felt her family needed her at the dairy. However, she did handle all the family finances after her marriage and encouraged her children to do well in school. She was very proud of the fact that her children were all college graduates and that their children excelled in school also.
Bill often worked away from home to supplement their cash income. This left Rose alone to handle the minor problems and major emergencies associated with raising three young children and an assortment of animals on a very isolated ranch. A simple broken bone was followed by two flat tires on the IH pickup before reaching the nearest neighbor where another spare was borrowed. Rose made the best of the situation, however, and took the neighbor’s son and her other two children to the circus while the patient got a nice new cast from Dr. Gregory.
