Fern G. Shepherd
Fern G. Shepherd, age 91, passed away on Tuesday, September 6, 2011 at the Valley View Nursing Home in Glasgow, Montana.

Fern was born in Glasgow, Montana, on April 15, 1920, to A.W. “Billy” and Freda Edd. Her childhood and early teen years were spent on the family farm south of Opheim in the Midway Community, where she enjoyed friendships with other farm families and the simplicity of country life. The family later moved to Glasgow so she and her sister could attend high school. She was a proud graduate of the GHS Class of 1938 and a founding trustee of the Glasgow High School Educational Trust.

On April 17, 1941, Fern married John “Jack” Renick Shepherd at First Lutheran Church in Glasgow. In 1942, he was called to service in WW II, and she remained in Glasgow, working in an attorney’s office. When Jack returned from the war in 1945, they moved to Kalispell, Montana for florists’ training at Woodland Flower Shop under the G.I. Bill. They returned to Glasgow in July of 1947 and purchased an interest in the Glasgow Flower Shop. They later owned and operated it independently until 1963 when they sold it and purchased a music store, which they operated as Shepherd’s Music until 1976.

A devoted wife and mother, she ensured that her children were exposed to music and thus, each child was required to have a minimum of three years of piano lessons! Her interest in their progress and her own curious mind motivated her to study music theory on her own.

She always enjoyed creating things – especially for her family – and all her children, grandchildren and many other relatives and friends were recipients of wool afghans she crocheted, each with a motif unique to their personality or interests.

Fern had many interests and pursued a variety of creative endeavors, tackling each with enthusiasm and determination. As a young wife and mother, she enjoyed planting and nurturing beautiful flowers throughout the yard., and she didn’t mind getting her hands dirty, even to the extent of mixing concrete for a fireplace and stepping stones in the yard.

As a partner with Jack in the floral shop, she collaborated with him in creating extensive seasonal window displays which were original and unique.

Later, when the family purchased a cabin at Fort Peck Lake, she optimistically planted dozens of trees along ‘the lane” (now called Poverty Ridge) and on their cabin lot, faithfully watering them year after year.

Fern always enjoyed writing, such as letters to friends and family, short stories, and a diary of activities at the lake cabin, but her biggest writing projects were an autobiography and a biography of Jack, both written at the request of her daughters.

In retirement, she explored new interests and enrolled in several classes through elder hostels. She also took oil and acrylic painting lessons taught in Glasgow and went onto produce nearly 150 paintings.

Her creative nature became especially active during Christmas seasons when she designed and produced outdoor displays which she relished sharing with neighbors and street traffic at her home on 4th Avenue South. Believing that enthusiasm was contagious, she regularly enlisted the help of friends, family and neighbors in various stages of her projects.

As a member of First Lutheran Church, she enjoyed participating in church circles and liked to help with decorating projects including flowers for the sanctuary. She especially enjoyed contributing to the church’s 15th anniversary book.

In addition to the traits described above, those who knew Fern would recall her sense of humor and her ready, cheerful smile.

Her husband, Jack, preceded her in death as well as her parents, son-in-law Alvin Hallock, sister and brother-in-law Delphy and Willard Hasbrouck, and niece, Helen Barta.

Survivors include three daughters, Bonnie Shepherd of Spokane, Linda Allie, and her husband Doug, and Julie Hallock of Glasgow; six grandchildren, Nathan Allie and his wife Janna of Billings; Leigh Allie of Miles City; Nicole Allie of Grandview, Missouri; Dustin Hallock and his wife, Tammy, of Billings; Dana Hallock of Glasgow; and Ashley Hanner and her husband, Tyler, of Billings; ten great grandchildren, and a niece and two nephews.
