Gertrude J. Palm Callahan

BILLINGS-Former Saco resident, Gertrude J. Palm Callahan, 98 years, a retired teacher, passed away on March 18, 2008 at the Ponderosa Pines Nursing Home in Billings.
Services will be held on Monday March 24, 2008 at 1:00 at the Saco Lutheran Church, with interment in the Saco Cemetery. Arrangements are provided by Adams Funeral Home of Malta, Mt.
Gertrude is survived by her daughter, Rosalie (Walt) Kuster of Mesquite, NV; sons, Paul (Patricia) Palm of Portland, Oregon, and Joe Palm of Saco, Mt., six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughter (Maribelle), husbands Herman Palm and Harold Callahan.
Gertrude was born on September 3, 1909 in Carpio, North Dakota, the third of four children of K Bisgaard and Christine Kappel. The family moved to Great Falls in the early years and then to a ranch north of Saco, Montana on Stinky Creek. There she grew up, and attended Montana State Normal College (Dillon) where she attained her teaching certificate. Gertrude taught in rural schools for seven years before marrying Herman Palm. Through this union four children were born: Rosalie, Maribelle, Paul and Joe. Maribelle passed away after a long illness in 1951. Herman died in 1956. She later married Harold Callahan, and moved to a ranch north of Hinsdale, Montana. They sold their ranch in 1969 and she moved to Billings where she then became a substitute teacher in the Billings school system until 1993 at age 84. She was frequently sought as a teacher because of her discipline and hard work. Gertrude resided in her home in Billings until she moved to a nursing facility in 2006. Throughout her life, she enjoyed music and dancing, cooking and entertaining, Gertrude will be remembered for her unbounded energy as a rancher, teacher and homemaker. She will also be remembered for her Lady Baltimore cakes that she frequently made and donated too many bake sales.

Peggy G. Nelson, 55 years, a former resident of Saco, Havre, and Shelby; and a homemaker, died Monday, March 17, 2008 at Benefis Hospital of complications from C.O.P.D.
Memorial services will be 11:00 A.M., Saturday, March 22, at the Adams Memorial Chapel in Malta. There will be a luncheon at the Little White Church following the services. Interment of her cremated remains will be by her family at a later time. Memorials may be made to the Boys and Girls Club or a charity of choice. Adams Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include her daughters, Minnie Stordahl and April Nelson both of Great Falls; her longtime companion, soul mate and husband, Tom Taillon of Great Falls; sister Wanda Berrisford of Hinsdale, brothers, Richard Eklund of Saco, Robert Eklund of Deer Lodge; grand children Fanatasia Stordahl and Curtis J. Stodahl both of Great Falls; her former husband and friend Jerry Buckley; many nieces and nephews.
Peggy was born October 31, 1952 in Glasgow, the daughter of Alvin C. and Helen M. (Cobb) Eklund. She was raised and educated in Saco. She married Roger Nelson and they were later divorce. She moved to Havre and Shelby to further her education. She and Jerry Buckley raised her daughters in Shelby. She moved to Great Falls and in 2001 established her new life with Tom Taillon. The exchange rings and considered themselves as man and wife. Peggy loved dancing, horses, and all her friends. She had a generous heart and would help anyone in need. She requested that people should wear hot pink or turquoise to her memorial service.

Lawrence S. Olson, age 92, of Vida, Montana, departed from this world at Rancho Springs Medical Center in Murrieta, California on March 12, 2008. Lawrence was born in a small log cabin on February 6, 1916, in Vida MT, where he grew up with his 6 siblings.
Lawrence was a lifelong, hardworking farmer, gardener and carpenter, among many other occupations. He did all of his own mechanic work, never taking any equipment into the shop to be fixed. As a young man, he helped build Fort Peck Dam, working with the CCs in Ekalaka, MT. He worked on a dairy farm in Langdon, North Dakota. He met his beloved wife, Ann Stalheim, in July of 1935; in 1938 they shared a dance together at Pleasant Valley School. They married on November 16, 1940. Together, they raised 9 beautiful children: Ruth, Norma, Robert, Diana, Edna, Connie, Jo Ann, Donna and Julie, who gave Lawrence and Ann 19 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild, and special daughter, LoraLee Donavan of Great Falls, MT. He was proud of his family, whom he dearly loved.
While farming and raising his family, Lawrence also clerked at Longview School for 21 years and worked all the general elections.
Lawrence loved to travel, especially to western Montana, where he enjoyed picking apples. He was a very honest man, always telling others to, “Just be your self” and to always “Be real.”
He is survived and mourned by his wife, Ann; daughters Ruth (Milo) Borg of Sidney, MT, Norma (Dan) Pawlowski of Murrieta, CA, Diana Lawson of Spokane, WA, Edna (John) Niccolls of Spokane, WA, Connie (Daryl) of Sidney, MT, Jo Ann Olson of Rapid City, SD, Donna (Dennis) Torres of New Town, ND, Julie (Randy) Azar of Williston, ND and his only son Robert (Alda) Olson of Vida, MT; his sister, Clovie Kuehne of Wolf Point, MT; his brother Eddie Olson of Vida, MT; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents, Olga and Chris Olson; 2 brothers Clarence and Harry Olson; and 3 sisters, Wilma Bernard and Ella DeShaw, and Ruth Olson at infancy, and two sons-in-law Milton Schlenker and Neil Lawson.
A Family Service will be held Wednesday, March 19, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at Clayton Stevenson Memorial Chapel in Wolf Point, MT with visitation to follow until 7:00 p.m. The funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, March 20, 2008 at the First Lutheran Church, Wolf Point, MT. Interment will be in Vida Cemetery, Vida, MT.
Memorials may be given to the donor’s choice. Clayton Stevenson Memorial Chapel of Wolf Point has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Leah Walker was born to Elizabeth and Peter Fuhrmann on September 2, 1914, in Baylor, Montana. She married Albert Walker on December 10, 1940. On March 14, 2008, Leah passed away from cancer at the Village Health Care Center in Missoula, Mt., at the age of 93. She went home to join her husband, Albert; her parents, Elizabeth and Peter Fuhrmann; her brothers, Samuel, Daniel, David, Rube, and Abraham; her sisters, Martha (Yager), Esther (Fuhrmann), Ruth (Fredrickson), and Lydia (Berrier).
Family has a[ways been very important to Leah. She would smile as she would talk about her life growing upon the family farm “up north”. In the early years, Leah and Albert could be found square dancing at the Valley Ridge Runners. Just a year ago, Leah was still seen dancing to a polka while watching the Lawrence Welk Show. Family gatherings continued through the years where you could find laughter and probably a challenge of a card game with Yahtzee becoming her favorite game. Through the years, Leah enjoyed trips with her sisters to places like Hawaii, the Grand Canyon, Disneyland, and Seattle. Going to Canistota SD, became almost a yearly family trip with Albert, her daughters, her sisters and/or anyone else who would want to come along. Her beautiful embroidered towels soon became family treasures
After her husband passed away, she joined the Fitness Club at the civic center and received the walking awards every year for the many miles she accumulated. She was very dedicated in staying in good shape.
Leah is survived by her daughters, Donna & Bob Combs (Glasgow), Janet Martz & John Williams (Spokane), Patsy & Mark Larson (Missoula); sister, Hulda Mae Tade (Great Falls), brother, Jim Fuhrmann (Missoula); grandchildren, Brian (Spokane), Galinda (LA), Brenda (Glasgow). Michael (Nashville), Elizabeth (Seattle), Lucas (NYC), Ivory (Seattle) and 9 great grandchildren: and numerous nieces and nephews.

Her grandchildren were very important to her. Basketball, cooking, and baking were her major hobbies.

Lena D. Huebert Gray, age 87, passed to her heavenly home from cancer on August 12, 2007. She was born on December 4th, 1919 in Lustre, Montana to Jacob and Sara (Dick) Huebert, the fifth of nine children.
After grade school, Lena went to Bible School for two years before going to high school in Frazer. She then attended college in Havre before her teaching assignment at the Hyland School, south of Richland, where she met her future husband, Gordon. They were married in Glasgow on January 19, 1946. They lived at Wolf Point for a short time until moving to Richland in 1947 where she was very active in the Lutheran Church, Christian education and music in any way she could be involved. She was blessed with a great musical talent and voice. Through the years she was very involved with ranch work and even helped with moving cattle, until she was bucked off her horse – no more of that!
Lena’s family and many friends were most important to her, so there were many guests in the family home to enjoy her famous bread and all the other treats she had on hand for her family, along with card games and sing-alongs.
After moving to Glasgow in 1994, Lena worked at the hospital and as an in-home care provider for several years. She was active in quilting and choir through the Lutheran Church and made many good friends. When farm friends and family came to town she loved visiting and catching up.
Lena was pre-deceased by her parents, brothers John and George, sisters Sara and Agnes and sons Jim and Palmer. She is survived by her loving husband, Gordon, children Sandra (Milo) Turner of Townsend, Dennis (Marla) Gray of Peerless, and Les (Brenda) Gray of Glasgow; Brothers Jake (Martha) Huebert of Glasgow, Frank (Evelyn) Huebert of Oklahoma, Sisters Anne Huebert and Marie Goertzen of Glendive. She is also survived by grandchildren Diana (Jack), Cami, Flint (Hilary), Zane, Jessie, Cassie, Danny, Tessa (Mike), Jenna (Jason), Jayson, Jeff, and 11 great-grandchildren.
