BORN: December 26, 1952 in Malta, Montana
PARENTS: Oliver and Alice (Kegel) Tollefson
Rockland Oliver Tollefson, age 52, died in his home August 21.
Christmas arrived a day late at the Oliver and Alice (Kegel) Tollefson residence. On December 26, 1952 Rockland Oliver Tollefson made his debut on the court of life at the Phillips County Hospital in Malta, MT. The family’s best present had arrived. He was welcomed home by two sisters, Gloria Jane and Allie Lee.
Rocky grew up being a farmers son, helping his dad with every aspect of farm life. He was a charter member of the Turkey Track 4-H club that his mother Alice had helped organize. He attended Saco Public School where his love for the sport of basketball began. Rocky’s dedication and leadership helped take his team to the State Tournament two consecutive years, his senior year going all the way to the Championship game. Rocky held Montana’s all time scoring record with 2, 326 points from 1971 – 1992. It was broken only after the three-point line came into effect. He was recruited by the Montana State Bobcats and accepted a full basketball scholarship there.
While playing for the Cats his eyes strayed from the court to the sideline where he saw a beautiful blonde cheerleader, Karen Mae Sloan, who became his future bride and soul mate. After graduating in 1975 with a degree in elementary education and coaching, he and Karen wree married August 2 of that year.
Rocky’s first teaching and coaching position was in Conrad, MT. He taught in the middle school and coached Jr. High and JV basketball. To be closer to the family farm they moved to Malta, MT in 1978 where he had accepted the position of head basketball coach for the Mustangs and as a fifth and sixth grade teacher. After one year, Rocky developed ulcerative colitis and stepped down from coaching, but remained teaching until the year 2000, when he retired from the education field.
His abilities with numbers and having had experience as a farmer make his the perfect candidate for the job of crop adjusting. His integrity and loyalty to both sides enabled him to balance fair adjusting decisions for both his company and the farmer.
His favorite past times included hunting, fishing, and going to all other sporting events, especially those in which his children or nieces and nephews participated. His home was filled with many awesome mounts from his hunting and fishing experiences for which he could tell a detailed, usually accurate story! Food was also on his list of passions, which started with his mothers home made bread. Many friends and family took pleasure in kidding him about the size of his steak at any backyard barbeque.
At the age of 52, after a fierce fight, the Lord relieved Rocky from his battle with cancer. He passed away surrounded by his family and his home on August 21, 2005. He had the chance to visit with numerous friends fro all types of relationships and was able to comfort them all.
Survivors include his wife Karen, son Rockland John, and daughter Kacie Nikole. He is also survived by father Oliver Tollefson who still resides at the family north of Saco, his sisters Goria Jane (Wally) Hartman of Great Falls, Montana and Allie Lee (Ira) Hammond of Saco, Montana, and seven nieces and nephews along with his childhood and lifelong friend, Brian DePuydt, whom he considered a brother. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, his mother Alice, and a niece, Roxanne.
