Cora Flaten
Monday, November 5th 2007

Cora Flaten died Sunday morning, November 4, 2007 at Faith Lutheran Home, Wolf Point, Montana after a wonderful life of 89 years.
Cora was born July 26, 1918 to John and Betsey Stensland. She was the third of seven children. The Family lived in the Boyd community, 20 miles north of Wolf Point, where they farmed and ranched. Cora and her siblings attended the Boyd School.

At the tender age of 14, Cora met her future husband, Clinton Flaten, when he came to work as a ranch hand for her dad. Later Clinton and Cora went to work at the Fort Peck Dam Project, Cora as a maid for an officer of the Corp. of Engineers, and Clint in the building of the dam.

In 1938 Cora and Clinton were married in the Lutheran church in Fort Peck, Montana. The couple lived in Park Grove for the next two years until the completion of the Fort Peck project. They then moved to a farm 32 miles southwest of Wolf Point where they farmed for 50 years and raised all seven of their children.

Cora was a hardworking farm wife, cooking for her large family as well as various hired men. Every year she planted a large garden and in the late summer there would be beans and corn to can and pickles to preserve. Fruit was purchased in town by the box and many hours later, jars of fruit and jam lined the shelves of the fruit room. Cora also loved to tend to her very own apple orchard from which she made many delicious apple pies! Some of Cora’s other talents included sewing, landscaping her yard, home decorating and remodeling, cutting hair and crocheting. In her later years she took up oil painting and quilting. Cora made a special quilt for each of her grandchildren for their High School graduation.

Cora took special pleasure in attending the country dances with Clint and the kids. Oh, how she loved to Polka!

Most memorable to Cora’s children is the way she faithfully cared for Clint, the love of her life, when he was suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease for the last 25 years of his life.

In 1994 Cora moved to Wolf Point where she lived on Johnson Street for about ten years. Then, in 2005, she moved to Faith Lutheran Home where she enjoyed socializing with the other residence and received excellent care from the staff.

Cora is survived by her children: Sharon (Wayne) Riley of Lewistown, Montana, Marlene (Larry) Potts of Hewitt, Texas, Sandra (Ron) Foth of Billings, Montana, Marcia (Gary) Fast of Lustre, Montana, Doug of Rural Wolf Point, Connie (Bob) Charette of Billings and David (Pam) of Glasgow, Montana; and siblings, John B. Stensland of Wolf Point, Jurene Jones of Twin Falls, Idaho and Lily Bryan Hickel of Billings. She is also survived by 18 grandchildren as well as 18 great-grandchildren.

Viewing will be Friday, November 9, 2007 from 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at Clayton Stevenson Memorial Chapel.

Lucille Mae Johnson
Friday, November 2nd 2007
Lucille Mae Johnson
July 17, 1917 – October 31, 2007
Lucille was born in Bismarck, North Dakota to Hannah and Stone Alderin. She was raised in the rural area of Stanton, North Dakota where she attended school; riding a horse or walking into Stanton from the farm to complete her education. As a young woman, Lucille left the farm with a girlfriend and ventured west to Cooke City, Montana where she worked as a maid and cook during the tourist seasons. Seeking adventure, she moved to Wheeler, Montana (Fort Peck Dam) where she met Northfield “Buster” Johnson. Buster and Lucille married and settled in Glasgow. Buster was and avid outdoorsman so it was only appropriate that the honeymoon be spent hunting ducks and geese at Nelson Reservoir. All their children were taught how to hunt. Every fall the Johnson household was full of hunters. Lucille was the first one up to make sure the coffee was brewing and breakfast was ready.
Lucille was a custodian for over thirty-five years at the First Security Bank (Wells Fargo) in Glasgow. It was not unusual to see her walking to the bank by 4:00 a.m. since Lucille never did drive. Come winter she would be the one outside shoveling the bank sidewalks and driveways before the customers arrived. Her career as a mother was spent teaching Sunday and Bible school for numerous years at the Fist Lutheran church. She made sure all four of her children were confirmed. She was a Girl Scout Leader, 4-H Leader, Cub Scout Leader, and the official bread and donut baker where on Friday afternoons her children and all the neighborhood children would race home to see who would get the BIG raised donuts. Lucille’s yard and garden were her pride and joy with fall being the best time of year. You would find her in the kitchen either canning the garden produce or wild game. If this wasn’t enough, she also took in ironing. We always had clean, pressed clothing and she took great pride in her family.
Her husband, parents, and brothers preceded her in death. She is survived by her sons Marvin (Barbara) of Sidney; Donald (Bonnie) Johnson of Great Falls and their children Becky and Casey; great-grandchildren Dylan, Kate, and Wyatt, her daughters Linda and her son Bradshaw Blomer of Glasgow; Judy (Bruce) McMaster of Helena and their children Kelli and Tyler; and numerous nephews and nieces.
Her children truly know and respect the meaning of a hard-working Mom. Thanks Mom. Cremation has taken place. A family memorial service will take place at a later date.
