James Derwin “Jim” Peterson
Saturday, July 15th 2006
James Derwin “Jim” Peterson, age 66, a retired public school counselor, died of long standing kidney cancer on July 13, 2006 at Frances Mahon Deaconess Hospital in Glasgow. He was a Christian believer who took pride in his integrity and lived by his principles. He was a caring person who advocated for those in need.
He was born January 8, 1940 in Conrad, MT to Sidney A. and Esther V. Peterson. While yet a pre-schooler, Jim’s parents moved to Wolf Point where he graduated from local schools in 1958.
Following training at the Brown Institute of broadcasting and Electronics in Minneapolis, MN, he worked for the W.L. Bill Holter radio station group – KLTZ Glasgow, KKGF Great Falls and KYLT Missoula.
As program director, announcer and newsman at KLTZ, he helped that outstanding facility win Montana Station of the Year honors twice before 1965. He loved the opportunity to serve listeners through timely public service programming, breaking local news and by playing “listenable” music of that era.
He was also a “stringer” for both the United Press international radio wire in Helena and for the Billings Gazette.
In 1965, Mr. Peterson was honored to serve as a staff assistant in the Washington, D.C. office of former Montana Congressman James F. Battin. Upon returning home, he enrolled at Eastern Montana College in Billings, graduating in 1972. He worked his way through college by serving as a press writer for the EMC office of information. Teaching in social studies took him to Conrad and Arlee before serving as principal in Frazer.
Through the University of Montana in Missoula, he completed two Master’s degrees in education-administration, K-12, and counseling, K-12.
He left education to serve as a social worker for the Roosevelt County welfare department. From 1982 until retirement in 1996, he worked as family-school coordinator and junior high counselor in Wolf Point. Later, Jim served five years as part time counselor at Frontier Elementary School near Wolf Point. He was especially fond of junior high age students.
For 1987-1988, the Wolf Point Elks Lodge named Jim as its “Citizen of the Year.” In 1990, he founded the Esther V. and Sidney A. Peterson Memorial Scholarship program to benefit graduates of Wolf Point High School. He liked to say: “I am not giving away money; rather, I am helping to redistribute opportunities.
He published a hardcover book in 1991: “A History of KLTZ ‘KILTS’ Radio-The Beacon of Glasgow.” This book project – the first book printed about a single radio station in Montana – led the establishment of the KLTZ exhibit at the Pioneer Museum in Glasgow. In 2003, he started a revision of the KLTZ book.
Jim sponsored the Sunday program THE WORD TODAY for over 10 years on KVCK Wolf Point. In addition, he was a founding contributor to and, until 1996, a longtime officer of and solicitor for the Wolf Point 100 Club. He was a lifetime member of the Montana Education Association and took special pride in being a member of the Mayo Legacy, a foundation program of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. His membership was featured in a 1997 issue of the MAYO MAGAZINE.
In 1976, Peterson underwent an innovative surgical procedure called the continent ileostomy (Kock Pouch) at the Mayo Clinic. He became the first person in Montana and was one of the first in the nation to live successfully with this type of bowel operation. As a result, he became a Mayo contact person for prospective Kock Pouch candidates and traveled Montana voluntarily to visit individuals and ostomy groups. Diagnosed with kidney cancer in 1989, he received medical care through both the Mayo clinic and the Glasgow (MT) Clinic.
Among his favorite activities were: An active walking program which totaled over 30, 000 miles; yard work – he tried to maintain his mother’s tradition for neatness; reading, feature writing and observing varied political viewpoints; personal office work in the remodeled grocery store building once operated by his parents; continual searching nationwide for vintage radio broadcast equipment for the KLTZ museum exhibit; determination to learn the computer; and participation in the Wolf Point Cancer Self-Help Group which he founded in 1996 and which promoted a dedicated Prayer Line.
Unfulfilled dreams included: Visiting relatives in southern Sweden; owning a radio station; and learning to pilot a J-3 Piper Cub airplane.
Jim, who never married, is survived by his brother Bruce and sister-in-law Sheila of Fort Peck; nephew Zak of Dickinson, ND; niece Lindsey of Billings and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his father (1981) and mother (1998). While in her last years, Jim had lived with and cared for his mother in the family home.
Visitation will be held on Monday, July 17 from 1 to 8 p.m. at Clayton Stevenson Memorial Chapel. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 18, 2006 at 10:30 a.m. at First Lutheran Church with interment in Greenwood Cemetery. Memorials are suggested for the Esther V. and Sidney A. Peterson Memorial Scholarship program, in care of Bruce H. Peterson, P O Box 32, Fort Peck, MT 59223. Condolences may be sent to the family at csmc@nemontel.net or http://www.stevensonandsons.com Clayton Stevenson Memorial Chapel has been entrusted with arrangements.
