Lewis M. "Fod" Hill

Lewis M. “Fod” Hill, 86, died from kidney failure on Saturday, November 11, 2006, at the VA nursing home in Miles City, Montana.
He was born October 7, 1920, in Nashua, MT, to Byron and Bertina (Haugen) Hill, longtime residents of Valley County. Fod was raised in Nashua, Montana. He was employed in the construction phase of the Fort Peck Dam from 1936-1941. In 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served as an aerial engineer with the 375th Troop Carrier 58th Squadron in the Southern Philippines, Luzan Western Pacific. He also helped transport prisoners of war from the Japanese concentration camps. He was honorably discharged from military duty in 1946, earning the following decorations: American Theatre Service Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal with Two Bronze Service Stars, Good Conduct Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. After the war, he worked a variety of jobs until he took over the family farm and ranch southwest of Nashua.
Fod’s personal pleasures included sharing his love for animals with local children, playing cards, attending auctions and visiting with friends and family.
Preceding him in death were his parents and his brother Iner Hill.
Survivors include his sister, Gladys-Rachel Naasz and her husband, Gene, of Glasgow; two brothers, Walter Hill, and his wife, Helen, of Havre, MT; Franklin Hill, and his wife, Joyce, of Nashua, MT; three nieces and six nephews.
Viewing will be held from 3:00 –5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 15th at Bell Mortuary in Glasgow. Graveside service will be held at the Nashua Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 16th. A luncheon reception at the Nashua Senior Citizen’s Center will follow immediately after the service. Donations to the Nashua Senior Citizens in memory of Lewis “Fod” Hill will be appreciated.

She was raised in Glentana and attended the Glentana school. Clara loved to crochet, gardening, loved roses, and providing a helping hand to family and friends. She was always the first one to help sick people, and she loved to be out in the sun.
On September 27, 1950 Clara married Marvin Barnby in Glentana, Montana. They were later divorced. In 1994 Clara married Doug Arneson in Glasgow, Montana. She worked as a custodian at Valley View Nursing Home for 25 years, retiring in 1994.

Bernetta Goddard
Bernetta Goddard, 74, died October 27, 1999 at St. Patrick's Hospital in Missoula of natural causes. Services will be November 2 at 11am at the First Lutheran Church in Glasgow and with an Order of Eastern Star Service on Monday night, November 1, at 7pm at Bell Chapel in Glasgow and with burial in Highland Cemetery. Rev. Martin Mock is officiating and Bell Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Bernetta was born in Miles, Iowa, in 1925 and was raised in Andover, Iowa, attending schools in Miles. After high school, she worked for the Clinton Garment Factory in Clinton, Iowa. She married Donald Goddard in 1945 in San Bernardino, California. They lived in California where she worked at the motor vehicle registration branch, then moved to Panama, Virginia, New York, Japan and Texas, before moving to the Glasgow Air Force Base. They later moved into Glasgow where she worked at the Killions Shoe Store. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church and the Order of Eastern Star. She served as Grand Warder for the OES and 3 times as grand representative for Texas, Wyoming, and Nevada. She also served as Mother Advisor for the Order of Rainbow Girls. She enjoyed walking, yard work, shopping and her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband Donald of Glasgow, 1 daughter, Donna Benson and husband Alan of Stevensville; 2 grandchildren: Tori MacLean and Thom, and Angie Benson; 2 great grandchildren: Dylan MacLean and Jacob MacLean; 1 brother, Werner Wilke of Clinton, Iowa; and her puppy, Ruckus.
Gretchen Ohlson
Gretchen Ohlson, 89, died at Frances Mahon Deaconess Hospital in Glasgow of natural causes on October 27, 1999. Services will be Monday, November 1, at 1pm at Bell Chapel in Glasgow with Pastor John Bilbro officiating. Burial will be in the Nashua City Cemetery. Bell Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
She was born in New Salem, North Dakota, in 1910 and moved 10 miles north of Nashua with her family in 1914, and attended Shamrock Country School. She married Samuel Ohlson in 1943. They moved to the Ohlson homestead south of Nashua where she was happy being a wife an mother. Together they raised 3 children. Samuel died in 1983. Gretchen moved into Nemont Manor in 1996 and resided there until she entered Valley View 2 weeks ago.
She was an avid gardener, hard worker and enjoyed attending the Seventh Day Adventist Church, and doing her daily Bible studies.
Survivors include her children: daughter Martha Doney and husband Jim of Nashua, sons Otto Ohlson and his wife Betty of White Sulphur Springs, and Sam Ohlson and his wife Nancy of Hinsdale; 2 sisters: Hazel Floyd of Savannah, Georgia, and Martha Decker of Billings; 8 grandchildren: Paul Doney of Havre, Michael Doney of Nashua, Tracie Ohlson of Havre, Zac and Greg Ohlson of Hinsdale, William and Charles Ohlson of Wyoming, and Elizabeth Ohlson of White Sulphur Springs; 9 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorials in Gretchen's name may be given to the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Glasgow.
Anton Michael Tony Fischer
Anton Michael Tony Fischer, 78, died October 27, 1999 at Valley View Nursing Home in Glasgow. Services will be November 1 at 10am at Bell Chapel, with Reverend Martin Mock officiating, and with burial in Highland Cemetery. Bell Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Tony was born in Trail City, South Dakota, in 1920. He lived in Trail City until he married Ruby Auske in Lemon, South Dakota, in 1942. They moved to Mobridge in 1942 where Tony took a job as a meat cutter. In 1948 they moved to Miles City and then came to Glasgow in 1952 where Tony worked for Railroad Express Agency. In 1959 Tony ran the local Allied Van Lines Agency which he operated until 1987, when he turned the business over to his son Jerry.
Tony was a life member of the VFW and was a charter member of the Elks. He served in the Army from 1942 to 1945, in the European Theatre; he was an AntiAircraft Gunner in the Service. He was also a cook in the Army. He enjoyed playing cribbage and other card games, collecting at VFW Bingo, like bowling, walking, doing crosswords puzzles and being with family and friends. He loved to dance and was called Rubberlegs by many.
Survivors include 3 sons: Myrl and his wife Mary of Glasgow, Jerry and his wife Janet of Billings, and Robert of Seattle; 1 daughter, Judy Edwinson and her husband Frank of Marshalltown, Iowa; 2 sisters: Barbara Irwin of Yakima, Washington, and Caroline Johnson of Sunnyside, Washington; 6 brothers: Adam of Yakima, Leo of Redmond, Washington, Frank and John of Yakima, Mike of San Marcos, California, and Al of Mercer Island, Washington; 7 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
Fern (Russell) Ophus
Fern (Russell) Ophus, 75, died Saturday in a local hospital of complications from diabetes. A memorial service is set for 2 p.m. Thursday in United Methodist Church in Hinsdale. Burial is in Hillview Cemetery there, followed by a reception at the Hinsdale American Legion Hall. Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Foundation, P. O. Box 2411, Great Falls, MT 59403.
She was born Nov. 20, 1923, in Glasgow. She graduated from Glasgow High School and attended two years of college at Northern Montana College in Havre. She married Helmer Ophus Nov. 27, 1943, in Raleigh, N.C. She was a secretary for the Corps of Engineers at Fort Peck from 1943-47. She and her husband purchased the town of Thoeny and Thoeny Ranch where they ranched and ran the Post Office and store. She also was a correspondent for the Glasgow Courier. The family moved to Hinsdale in 1960 where they ranched. In 1970, they moved to Sidney where they owned and operated Ophus and Associates Real Estate Agency, retiring to Great Falls in 1993 to be closer to family. First and foremost, Fern enjoyed being a mother and homemaker and her many friends. She also belonged to the United Methodist Women’s Club, Christian Women’s Club, Order of Eastern Star, American Legion Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary, Business and Professional Women, Sons of Norway, Women of the Moose, Cub Scouts and 4-H.
Survivors include her husband of Great Falls; three daughters, Carolyn Wendell of Great Falls, Kathryn McColly of Gainesville, TX and Trudy Ophus of San Diego, CA.; a son, Hal Ophus of Valleyford, WA
Mary A. Purcell Lindell
Mary A. Purcell Lindell, 83, died at Frances Mahon Deaconess Hospital in Glasgow on October 23, 1999, of natural causes. Vigil services are set for Thursday, October 28, at 7pm at St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Glasgow, with visitation from 3-5pm at the church. Funeral services are set for St. Raphael¹s Catholic Church in Glasgow on Friday, October 29, at 10am, with Rev. Thad Kozikowski officiating and with burial in Highland Cemetery. Bell Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Mary, a lifelong Valley County resident, was born in Thoeny to John and Marie Purcell. Mary was raised and attended schools in Glasgow. In 1934 she married Kenneth Lindell in Glasgow; they lived a few years in Fort Peck and in Portland, Oregon, before moving to a farm on the North Bench, northeast of Glasgow, that her family had homesteaded. She had resided there ever since. She was active in North Bench Ladies Homemakers Club, The St. Raphael¹s Altar Society, and enjoyed reading, embroidering, crocheting, cooking and baking.
Survivors include her sons, Don of Glasgow and Loren and his wife Millie of Fox Island, Washington; 7 grandchildren including Kristen and Larry Lindell, and 2 great grandchildren.
Carolee Wallem
Carolee Wallem, 65, died at Frances Mahon Deaconess Hospital of natural causes on October 16, 1999. Services will be Thursday October 21st at 2pm at the First Lutheran Church in Glasgow, with Rev. Martin Mock officiating and with burial in Highland Cemetery. Bell Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Carolee was born in Glasgow in 1934 to Oliver Grina and Emma Hanson, and attended schools in Glasgow and Havre, graduating from GHS in 1952. She married Glenn Wallem in 1954. In 1952, she went to work for the Farmers Stockgrowers Bank in Glasgow. She attended for 3 years and graduated from a Banking School in Madison, Wisconsin. She served as vice president of the Fist Security Bank and Bank of Montana, specializing in real estate, retiring in 1987. She was the first woman president of the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce & Agriculture, served various terms as president of the Soroptomists, played with the Scottie Blue Bells, served on the Valley View
Foundation Board at the First Lutheran Church, the Church Council, the State Board for Lutheran Synodical Women, and the Milk River Activity Board. She was very active in her church, with music and singing in the choir, and enjoyed fishing, golfing, reading, Bible studies, traveling (to the Holy Land), photography, painting and calligraphy. She especially enjoyed her family reunion.

Geniveve (Jennie) McIntyre
Geniveve (Jennie) McIntyre, 96, died at Valley View Nursing Home in Glasgow on October 9, 1999 of natural causes. Services are at Bell Chapel in Glasgow on Wednesday, October 13, at 1pm, with burial in Highland Cemetery. Bell Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Geniveve was born in Salem, Missouri, and moved to Montana at age 14, coming by wagon over the Cooke City Highway, and homesteaded on the Marias River near Shelby and Valier. She married Ted Farrell and they homesteaded in Pondera County. They moved to Glasgow in 1932 where he went to work on the Fort Peck Dam Construction, and later for the Great Northern Railway. They raised their family in Glasgow. Ted passed away in 1955. In 1963, Geniveve married Ted McIntyre Sr. and they lived on their ranch just west of Glasgow. Ted passed away in 1989. She has resided at Valley View Nursing Home in Glasgow the last 10 years. She loved to crochet, to listen to baseball games on the radio, reading, writing letters, flowers and cooking. She especially loved her grandchildren.
Survivors include 1 son, Tom Farrell and his wife Millie of Laurel; 3 daughters: Mary Ann Remus of Glasgow, Jennie and husband Jerry McPherson of Glasgow, and Loretta Dickson of Freeport, Texas; 20 grandchildren and 36 great grandchildren.
Delphine Allison
Delphine Allison died at Mesa, Arizona on September 29th, 1999. Cremation has already taken place and the memorial service will be held on Saurday, October 9th at 11:00 a.m., Bell Mortuary in Glasgow. Bell Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Delphine Allison was born in Jordan. Delphine spent her early years in Wheeler and attended and graduated from Glasgow schools. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin in LaCrosse and made a career of teaching in Concord, California. After her retirement, she made her summer home in Glasgow and Whitefish, and her winter home n Mesa, Arizona.
Survivors include, mother: Mildred Ellison, and sister: Dorothy Hurly of Glasgow.
