Mrs. Martha M. Irwin
YORK, Ala. - Mrs. Martha Virginia McGowen Irwin, 84, died Monday, Oct. 20, 1997, at Everett, Wash.
Born Jan. 2, 1913, in Cuba, Ala., she was the wife of the late Mr. Wade Sylvester Irwin and the daughter of Mr. Thomas Pinckney McGowen and Mrs. Ada Davis McGowen, both deceased. She graduated with a degree in music from Judson College in Marion, Ala. She completed graduate work in piano at the Cincinnati Conservatory. She taught music in Birmingham, Ala., and Sumter County school systems. She completed graduate courses in psychology, counseling and guidance from the University of Alabama. She was dean of women and professor of education at the University of West Alabama. She was faculty adviser for Cardinal Key, Panhellenic Council and Association of Women Students. She was a member of American Association of University Women, Alpha Delta Kappa and The Teacher's Association. She was a member of the West Alabama Mental Health Board for many years.
Survivors include two daughters, Ms. Mary Virginia 'Ginnie' Sibum and Ms. Sylvia Irwin, both of Everett; and a brother, Mr. Thomas Davis McGowen of Burlington.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at York Presbyterian Church.
The family will receive friends Monday at Roy Funeral Home in York, Ala., which is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be made to Virginia M. Irwin Scholarship at the University of West Alabama, Livingston, Ala., and York Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Zelma McIntyre
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Ida Zelma Cozart McIntyre, 83, of 617 Avon Ave., died at 12:15 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, 1997, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.
A native of Durham County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Francis F. McIntyre and the daughter of Mr. Hunter McGuire Cozart and Mrs. Mary Cash Cozart, both deceased. She was retired from Dura-Tread Hosiery Mills and was a Baptist.
Survivors include a brother, Mr. Lloyd Cozart of Burlington; and two sisters, Mrs. Ruth McIntyre of Altamahaw and Mrs. Dora Snipes of Saxapahaw.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs. Alice Clayton and Mrs. Effie Bowling; and three brothers, Mr. Alfred Cozart, Mr. Thomas Cozart and Mr. David Cozart.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Bob Stephenson, associate pastor of Glen Hope Baptist Church.
Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.
The family will be at Lowe Funeral Home from 7 to 9 this evening and at other times at the home.
Mr. Charles Covington
BURLINGTON - Mr. Charles Preston Covington, 64, of 706 Huffman Mill Road, Apt. N-3, died at 10:55 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, 1997, at The Hospice Home after an illness of several months.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Nellie Boswell Covington, who survives, and the son of Mr. Otis Covington and Mrs. Juanita Leath Covington, both deceased.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Miss Chanda Covington of New York; a sister, Mrs. Pearl Ann Covington of Philadelphia; and a brother, Mr. Otis Covington Jr. of Austin, Texas.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Green Level United Church of Christ by the Rev. Coslow E. Holt, pastor. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at Green Level United Church of Christ 30 minutes before the service and at other times at the home.

MEBANE - Mrs. Eleanor Matuski Carroll, 70, of 1938 Jones Drive, died at 1:25
p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21, 1997, at her home after a brief illness.
Born Jan. 1, 1927, in Staten Island, N.Y., she was the wife of the late Mr. Warren Philip Carroll, and the daughter of Mrs. Vera Lang Matuski, who survives, and the late Mr. Jackob Matuski. She was a member of the Guilford County Board of Elections for many years and a volunteer at the Gateway Education Center in Greensboro. She was a homemaker.
Survivors other than her mother include three daughters, Ms. Susan Blanch of Staten Island, Mrs. Nancy Nolan of Andover, Minn. and Ms. Janet Mauldin of Mebane; a sister, Ms. Mary Samulski Whiting of New Jersey; and seven grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday at Agape Baptist Church in Mebane by the Rev. Steve Hinton, pastor. Inurnment will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 10, in Arlington National cemetery in Washington, D.C.
The family will be at the home.

Mrs. Winifred Henry
YANCEYVILLE - Mrs. Winifred Graves Henry, 79, of 8-E Old Farm Apartments, died Monday, Oct. 20, 1997, at her home.
Born March 21, 1918, in Caswell County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Gerald Henry and the daughter of Mr. Oscar Graves and Mrs. Mallie Graves, both deceased. She was a member of Graves Chapel Baptist Church and was a former claims handler with Metropolitan Insurance Company.
Survivors include two sisters, Ms. Mary G. Davis of Yanceyville and Mrs. Barbara G. Mills of Reidsville.
The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. today at Graves Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. Kenneth Walker. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at the home.

Mr. Coy J. Bigelow
GREEN LEVEL - Mr. Coy Junior Bigelow, 44, of 2629 East Simpson Road, died at 8:57 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21, 1997, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Becky Crawford Bigelow, who survives, and the son of Mrs. Lucy H. Bigelow, who survives, and the late Mr. Coy Bigelow Sr. He was a graduate of Williams High School and a military policeman with the U.S. Army.
Survivors other than his wife and mother, both of Graham, include two daughters, Miss Risha M. Bigelow and Ms. Evangela A. Bigelow, both of Graham; a son, Mr. Coy Lynell Bigelow of Graham; and a grandchild.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Mr. Michael L. Bigelow.
The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Hargett and Bryant Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Robert Vanhook. Burial will be in North Lawn Cemetery, veteran section.

Mrs. Mary P. Dickens
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Mary Blanche Phillips Dickens, 81, of 1475 Monroe Holt Road, died at 9:55 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21, 1997, at Alamance Health Care Center after three years of failing health.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Charles William Dickens Sr. and the daughter of Mr. H. Claude Phillips and Mrs. Safrona Robbins Phillips, both deceased. She was a member of First Reformed United Church of Christ.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Beverly Joan Hatrock of Couer D'Alene, Idaho; three sons, Mr. Charles Dickens Jr. of Elon College, Mr. Ben E. Dickens of Burlington and Mr. Danny C. Dickens of Chicago; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Wanda Sadler of Graham; a stepson, Mr. Robert E. Dickens of Atlanta; a brother, Mr. O.D. 'Doc' Phillips of Liberty; and five grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Rich and Thompson Chapel in Graham by the Rev. Tim Stevens and the Rev. Brad Griese, co-pastors of Whitsett Baptist Church. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Inez W. Sumner
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Inez Warren Sumner, 81, of 2013 S. Mebane St., died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 1997, at her home after six months of failing health.
A native of Guilford County, she was the wife of the late Mr. R. Avery Sumner and the daughter of Mr. John Phillip Warren and Mrs. Blanche Faucette Warren, both deceased. She was retired from Carolina Hosiery Mill. She was a member of Piedmont Presbyterian Church, where she was a member of the Circle. She worked in food service at Turrentine Middle School.
Survivors include two sons, Mr. Robert W. 'Bob' Sumner of Raleigh and Mr. James Timothy 'Tim' Sumner of Burlington; two sisters, Mrs. Helen W. Lowe and Miss Lucille Warren, both of Greensboro; three brothers, Mr. Thomas H. Warren of Browns Summit, Mr. Jack Warren of Greensboro and Mr. Marion Warren of Baltimore; and two grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs. Addie Lea and Mrs. Francis Mitchell; and three brothers, Mr. Argus Warren, Mr. Bill Warren and Mr. John Warren.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in Alamance Memorial Park by the Rev. Morton Kurtz, pastor of Piedmont Presbyterian Church.

PHILADELPHIA - Mrs. Sadie Graves Morrow, 75, of 2617 W. Ingersoll St., died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 1997, at Fitzgerald-Mercy Hospital.
Born Sept. 12, 1922, in Caswell County, she was the wife of the late Mr. William Thomas Morrow and the daughter of Mr. Jessie Graves and Mrs. Maggie Graves, both deceased. She was a retired nurse.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Theresa Wilson of Philadelphia; a half brother, Mr. George Graves of Reidsville; and four grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at Fulton Funeral Chapel.
Burial will be in the Veteran cemetery in Danville, Va.

Mrs. Rosaland Burnette
BALTIMORE - Mrs. Rosaland Burnette died Saturday, Oct. 18, 1997, in Baltimore.
A native of Roxboro, she was the daughter of Mr. Zebedee Norwood and Mrs. Lossie Norwood Reaves, both deceased.
Survivors include three daughters, Ms. JoAnn Burnette, Ms. Yvonne Burnette and Ms. Lee Burnette, all of Baltimore; a son, Mr. Jerry Burnette of Baltimore; six sisters, Mrs. Nettie Ireland, Mrs. Virginia Enoch, Mrs. Harnetha Doby, Mrs. Lillie Battle and Mrs. Gladys Shaw, all of Burlington, and Mrs. Lula Watties of Washington, D.C.; and a brother, Mr. Daniel Reaves of Burlington.
A memorial service will be conducted Saturday at Power of Faith Church in Baltimore.
