Mr. D. Turner Phillips
BURLINGTON - Mr. D. Turner Phillips, 89, of Twin Lakes Center died at 6:48 a.m. Tuesday, March 17, 1998, at the center.
A native of Wilkes County, he was the husband of Mrs. Beulah Bradley Phillips, who survives, and the son of Mr. Ira R. Phillips and Mrs. Adelaide Josephine Blackburn Phillips, both deceased. He was the retired owner of Swan Stores and was a member of the Burlington Kiwanis Club. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Burlington, where he was lifetime deacon, trustee of the church, Sunday school teacher and a choir member.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include two sisters, Mrs. Faye Phillips Guthrie and Mrs. Pansy Epperson, both of Hickory; and a brother, Mr. S. Alwyn Phillips of Hickory.
The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. today at First Baptist Church of Burlington by Dr. Craig McMahan, pastor. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.
The family will be the guest house of Twin Lakes Center, 697 Westbrook Drive, Burlington.

Mrs. Mattie P. Hanner
WILSON - Mrs. Mattie Pinnix Hanner, 69, of Special Care Center, died Thursday, March 19, 1998, at Wilson Memorial Hospital after a long illness.

Mr. Clyde Smithey Sr.
ELON COLLEGE - Mr. Clyde Milton Smithey Sr., 84, of 2670 Elon-Ossipee Road, died at 12:50 p.m. Thursday, March 19, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after three years of failing health, five days critical.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Minnie Lea Kernodle Smithey, who survives, and the son of Mr. William David Smithey and Mrs. Lela Blackwell Smithey, both deceased. He retired from Burlington Industries after 40 years of service and later retired form Carolina Biological Supply Co. after 13 years of service. He was a U.S. Army veteran and was a member of Altamahaw Baptist Church for more than 50 years.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include two daughters, Mrs. Judy Smithey Montgomery of Denton and Mrs. Peggy Smithey Moore of Burlington; two sons, Mr. David L. Smithey of Efland and Mr. C. Milton Smithey Jr. of Elon College; a sister, Mrs. Ruth Saul of Altamahaw; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ms. Callie Mae Satterfield and Ms. Lois Saul; and six brothers, Mr. Clay Smithey, Mr. Dan Smithey, Mr. Sam Smithey, Mr. Garland Smithey, Mr. Jack Smithey and infant brother, Ray Smithey.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Altamahaw Baptist Church by Dr. Dan Christopher, pastor, and the Rev. Felton Massey, pastor of Faith Bible Chapel. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.
The family will be at Lowe Funeral Home from 6 to 8 this evening, and at other times at the home.

Mr. D. Wayne Taylor
BURLINGTON - Mr. D. Wayne Taylor, 71, of 1925 Routh Road, died Thursday, March 19, 1998, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Durham after five months of failing health.
A native of Orange County, he was the husband of Mrs. Tessie Zimmerman Taylor, who died in 1974, and the son of Mr. John Edward Taylor and Mrs. Myrtle Smith Taylor, both deceased. He was owner and operator of Wayne Taylor and Associates. He was a member of the Cattleman's Association, the Farmers Club and the Board of Realtors. He was an Air Force veteran of World War II and attended Shallow Ford United Church of Christ.
Survivors include one daughter, Ms. Barbara Taylor Plumblee of Burlington; one son, Mr. Thomas W. 'Tom' Taylor of Collierville, Tenn.; one brother, Mr. John Roland Taylor of Salisbury; one sister, Mrs. Doris T. Robinson of Efland; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Mr. David Wayne Taylor.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Shallow Ford United Church of Christ by the Rev. Les Jolley, pastor, and the Rev. Phil Hardy, pastor of Union Ridge United Church of Christ. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Shallow Ford United Church of Christ cemetery.

Ms. Fannie S. Butler
LaGRANGE - Ms. Fannie Mae Silverthorne Butler, 94, of 3663 Bonnie Walters Road, died Thursday, March 19, 1998, at Britthaven Nursing Home.
She was the wife of the late Mr. G.W. Butler.
Survivors include one daughter, Ms. Johnnie Mae Jones of LaGrange; three grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Graham Memorial Park.
The family will be at McClure Funeral Home in Graham from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Saturday before the funeral.

Mrs. Margaret Dismuke
DURHAM - Mrs. Margaret Johnson Dismuke, 77, of 3616 S. Alston Ave., died Wednesday night, March 18, 1998, at her home.
A native and lifelong resident of Durham, she was the wife of Mr. Paul Eugene Dismuke Sr., who survives, and the daughter of Mr. William Ernest Johnson and Mrs. Lyddia Riddle Johnson, both deceased. She was a former employee of IBM, where she was a production specialist and tester. She was a member of Lowes Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors other than her husband include two sons, Mr. William Charles Dismuke of Durham and Mr. Paul Eugene Dismuke Jr. of Cary; a brother, Mr. J.T. Johnson of Concord; a sister, Ms. Hazel Thompson of Graham; and five grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Lowes Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Forest Gale and the Rev. Jay Fogleman. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at the home.

Mr. Charles Reynolds Sr.
BURLINGTON - Mr. Charles William Reynolds Sr., 75, of 7125 Ferncliff Drive, died at 4:15 a.m. Friday, March 20, 1998, at the Hospice Home of Burlington.
A native of Guilford County, he was the husband of Mrs. Mary Burns Reynolds, who survives, and the son of Mr. Carl Westley Reynolds and Mrs. Ina Johnson Reynolds, both deceased. He was retired from Cone Mills and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Mrs. Jim (Ann R.) McKenna of Denver, N.C.; a son, Mr. Charles W. Reynolds Jr. of Liberty; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Rich and Thompson Chapel in Burlington by the Rev. Ben Bishop, Hospice chaplain.

Mr. Baxter E. Mitchell
BURLINGTON - Mr. Baxter E. Mitchell, 66, of 1625 Granville St., died at 5:15 p.m. Thursday, March 19, 1998, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham after an illness of five weeks.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of the late Mrs. Bonnie Lee Overley Mitchell, and the son of Mr. Joseph Martin Mitchell and Mrs. Quine-Tiny Rollins Mitchell, both deceased. He was a retired helicopter pilot and a flight engineer for the Alaska pipeline.
Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Grace Smith and Mrs. Alma Winfrey, both of Burlington; and a brother, Mr. Winfield Mitchell of Burlington.
The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at Rich and Thompson Chapel in Burlington by the Rev. R.E.L. Moser. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Joseph Hicks Jr.
LONG BEACH, Calif. - Mr. Joseph C. Hicks Jr., 60, died Monday, March 9, 1998, at Long Beach Hospital.
A native of Burlington, he was the son of the Rev. Joseph C. Hicks Sr. and Mrs. Dalbe Mae Hicks, both deceased.
Survivors include a son, Mr. Joseph Dean Hicks of Long Beach; two sisters, Ms. Bettye Halacheff of Burlington and Ms. Ella Threat of Jamestown, Calif.
Mrs. Bessie M. Drake
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Bessie Mann Drake, 85, of 719 Center Ave., died at 10:10 a.m. Thursday, March 19, 1998, at Skilled Nursing Division of Alamance Regional Medical Center.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of Mr. R.D. Drake, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Tom Mann and Mrs. Ida Mae Mann, both deceased. She was a member of the Burlington Assembly of God.
Survivors other than her husband of the home include a daughter, Ms. Nancy Jo Drake of Mebane; three sons, Mr. Raymond Drake Jr. of Whiteville, Mr. Charles Drake of Jacksonville and Mr. Robert Drake of Liberty; a sister, Mrs. Irene Boggs of Snow Camp; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Rich and Thompson Chapel in Burlington by Dr. Howard Thompson, pastor of Burlington Assembly of God, and the Rev. L.C. Troxler, associate pastor. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.

Funeral services for Mrs. Iona M. Byrd will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at McLeansville First Baptist Church.
She was the wife of the late Mr. George Byrd Sr.

Mr. Richard McAdams
BURLINGTON - Mr. Richard Lydel McAdams, 62, of 101 Greenwood St., died at 9:30 a.m. Friday, March 20, 1998, at his home after three years of failing health.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Sheron Davis McAdams who survives, and the son of Mr. Walter Lydel McAdams and Mrs. Sallie Frances Culberson McAdams, both deceased. He was employed by Newlin Hardware for 18 years and later retired from Culp Upholstery and Prints. He was a Baptist.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include one son, Mr. Dalton Barry McAdams of Mebane; one sister, Mrs. June Gray McAdams Spears of Rockingham; and one grandchild.
He was preceded in death by three brothers and a grandson.
The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Bennie Smith, pastor of Staley Memorial Baptist Church. Burial will be in Graham Memorial Park.
