Mr. Ralph V. Baker
BURLINGTON - Mr. Ralph Vernon 'Rudy' Baker, 65, of 508 Spruce St., died Tuesday, March 24, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after three months of failing health.
A native of Alamance County, he was the son of Mr. John Archie Baker and Mrs. Irene Williams Baker, both deceased. He was retired from Old Dominion Box Shop and was a Methodist.
Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Gertrude B. Crutchfield and Mrs. Mary Ruth Freeman, both of Burlington; and a brother, Mr. Clyde B. Baker of Burlington.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Mr. Cecil William Baker and Mr. Thomas James Baker.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Lester Haney, pastor of Shamrock Evangelical Methodist Church, and the Rev. L.C. Troxler, associate pastor of Burlington Assembly of God. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.
The family will be at Lowe Funeral Home from 6 to 8 Thursday evening, and at other times at the home.
The Rev. Irene Brooks
HILLSBOROUGH - The Rev. Irene Turner Brooks, 93, died Friday, March 20, 1998.
Born Feb. 20, 1905, in Orange County, she was the daughter of Mr. Anderson Thompson and Mrs. Sue Thompson, both deceased.
Survivors include four sons, Mr. Ross Turner Jr. of Hillsborough, Mr. Eli Turner and Mr. Charles Turner, both of Philadelphia, and Mr. Frank Turner of Roxboro; five daughters, Ms. Mary Johnson of Mebane, Ms. Catherine Mitchell of Rocky Mount, Va., Ms. Alice Evans and Ms. Ida Louise Evans, both of Hillsborough, and Ms. Ann Foust of Chapel Hill; 12 stepchildren; 50 grandchildren; 71 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Mount Zion AME Church by the Rev. Robert Johnson. Burial will be in Cresmont cemetery in Hillsborough.
The family will be at the church from 7 to 9 this evening, and at other times at the home.

Mrs. Ada Mae Terrell
HILLSBOROUGH - Mrs. Ada Mae Terrell, 58, died Sunday, March 22, 1998, at her home.
Born Nov. 20, 1939, in Orange County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Ralph A. Terrell, and the daughter of Mrs. Catherine Harrelson, who survives, and the late Mr. Phillip Mack Luster Harrelson. She was a member of Warren's Chapel Baptist Church.
Survivors other than her mother of Cedar Grove include three sons, Mr. Effrice Marcell 'Mike' Harrelson of Jacksonville, Fla., Mr. Stacey W. Terrell and Mr. Ronald A. Terrell, both of the home; a daughter, Ms. Veronica G. Terrell of Graham; four sisters, Ms. Bessie Thompson of Mebane, Ms. Wanda H. Whitted and Ms. Jeraline Harrelson, both of Cedar Grove, and Ms. Sandra C. Harrelson of Washington, D.C.; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Warren's Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. James Brown. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at the church one hour before the service.

Mrs. Sally A. Lewis
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Sally Andrews Lewis, 80, died Tuesday, March 24, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.
Born March 15, 1918, in Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Carl Anthony Lewis, and the daughter of Mr. C. Monroe Andrews and Mrs. Mamie Lineberry Andrews, both deceased.
Survivors included two sons, Mr. Carl Anthony Lewis II and Mr. Troy Dean Holt, both of Burlington.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Ms. Margaret Ann Lewis; a son, Mr. Buddy Holt; and a sister, Ms. Nellie A. Riddle.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in the chapel of First Baptist Church of Burlington, by Dr. Craig McMahan.
Memorials may be made to a charity of choice.

Mr. Dewey R. Simmons
GRAHAM - Mr. Dewey Rufus Simmons, 75, of 779 Woody Drive, died at 5:15 p.m. Monday, March 23, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.
A native of Virginia, he was the husband of the late Mrs. Mattie Paggett Simmons and the son of Mr. Thomas Lloyd Simmons and Mrs. Katie Elizabeth Trippett Simmons, both deceased. He was a retired carpenter.
Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Debra Barberie of Mebane and Mrs. Vickye Paglia of Graham; and two brothers, Mr. Dale Simmons and Mr. Edward Simmons, both of Burlington.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Mr. Clarence Simmons.
A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Guiding Light Baptist Church by the Rev. Max Rich, pastor.
The family will be at the church following the service.

Mr. H. Monta Denson
BURLINGTON - Mr. H. Monta Densen, 76, of 917 Everett St., died at 9:45 p.m. Tuesday, March 24, 1998, at Wesley Long Hospital in Greensboro after a critical illness of one week.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of the late Mrs. Doris Alford Denson and the son of Mr. Vercy Lawrence Denson and Mrs. Thelma Moran Denson, both deceased. He was a retired wallpaper contractor. He was a former Boy Scout master of Troop 112 and a World War II Army veteran. He was a member of First Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church where he was a Sunday School teacher and an elder.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Steve (Jane) McGuire of Greensboro; two sisters, Mrs. Elinor Grey Fink of Pittsboro and Ms. Helen Sue Smith of Burlington; two brothers, Mr. Millard D. Denson and Mr. Ted V. Denson, both of Burlington; one grandchild; and a great-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at First Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Tim Robinson and the Rev. Peter Kemery. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.
The family will be at the Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 7 to 9 this evening, and at other times at the residence.

Mrs. Leona O. Miles
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Leona Oakley Miles, 89, formerly of 4378 N.C. 62, South, Alamance, died at 11:15 a.m. Wednesday, March 25, 1998, at White Oak Manor after eight years of failing health, three days critical.
A native of Caswell County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Richard Levi Miles, and the daughter of Mr. William Franklin Oakley and Mrs. Minnie Tate Oakley, both deceased. She was retired from Tower Hosiery and a Primitive Baptist.
Survivors include a brother, Mr. W. Henry Oakley of Burlington; and a sister, Mrs. Pearl O. Miles of Alamance.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Ms. Mary Bett Nicks; and a brother, Mr. Johnny Allen Oakley.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Bush Arbor Primitive Baptist Church by Elder Wallis Smith, pastor. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at Lowe Funeral Home from 6 to 8 Friday evening, and at other times at the home of the sister, 4368 N.C. 62 South, Alamance.

Mr. Richard Capes
MEBANE - Mr. Richard 'Dickie' Ronald Capes, 64, of 302 W. Austin St., died at 8:05 p.m. Tuesday, March 24, 1998, at the Hospice Home of Burlington after a critical illness of five months.
A native of Alamance County, he was the son of Mr. Jefferson M. Capes Sr., and Mrs. Virginia Poole Capes, both deceased. He was a retired employee of Kingsdown Inc., and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a Baptist.
Survivors include three daughters, Ms. Selena Capes Grace of Huber Heights, Ohio, Ms. Christina Capes Barber and Ms. Angela Capes Jackson, both of Burlington; two sons, Mr. Kenneth Capes of Graham and Mr. Randy Capes of Saxapahaw; a brother, Mr. Kenneth Capes of Haw River; and 12 grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at McClure Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Donald Swinney, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Burlington. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
The family will be at McClure Funeral Home in Mebane from 7 to 9 this evening, and at other times at the home of the brother Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Capes, 1938 Jimmie Kerr Road, Haw River.

Mr. Mark A. Watson
EFLAND - Mr. Mark Alan Watson, 48, died Monday, March 23, 1998, at UNC Hospitals.
He was the husband of Mrs. Mildred Smith Watson who survives, and the son of Mr. J.A. Watson and Mrs. Patty Hodge Watson of Durham. He was a graduate of Elon College where he received a degree in accounting. He was president of Watson Stake Manufacturing, a family business established by his father in 1965. He was a Past Master of Durham Masonic Lodge 352, a member of Hillsborough Presbyterian Church and a former member of Yates Baptist Church in Durham.
Survivors other than his wife and his parents include two brothers, Mr. Tony Watson of Chapel Hill and Mr. Kelly Watson of Hillsborough.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Hillsborough Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Debbie Taylor and Dr. C. Ronald Cumbie. Burial with Masonic graveside rites will be in Maplewood cemetery in Durham. A reception for friends and relatives will be held at 1 p.m. in the Hillsborough Presbyterian Church fellowship hall.

Mr. C.R. Byrd Jr.
BURLINGTON - Mr. C.R. Byrd Jr., 80, of 1001 E. Lake Drive, died at 8:10 a.m. Thursday, March 26, 1998, at his home.
A native of Harnett County, he was the husband of Mrs. Margaret White Byrd, who survives, and the son of Mr. Cosby Roscoe Byrd and Mrs. Naomi Jones Byrd, both deceased. He was the retired co-founder, president and chairman of the board for Byrd Food Stores. He was a member of Glen Hope Baptist Church.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Ms. Vickie Diane Byrd of Burlington; a son, Mr. Jimmy L. Byrd of Burlington; three sisters, Mrs. Ken (Marie) Clark of Westchester, Pa., Ms. Gene (Doris) Wood of Lillington and Mrs. Jerry (Linda) Williams of Dunn; four brothers, the Rev. R.O. Byrd of Coats, Mr. C.G. Byrd, Mr. A. Stanton Byrd and Mr. H. Watson Byrd, all of Burlington; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Mr. R.K. Byrd and Mr. Lewis Talmadge Byrd.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Glen Hope Baptist Church by the Rev. J.L. Williams, the Rev. Clarence Vaughn and the Rev. Don Jordan. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.
