Mr. Donald D. Long
BURLINGTON - Mr. Donald D. Long, 59, of 637 North Ave., died at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, March 26, 1998, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill after 61/2 years of failing health, six months critical.
A native of Person County, he was the husband of Mrs. Faye Holloway Long, and the son of Mr. Jesse T. Long and Mrs. Thelma Adkins Long, both deceased. He was the owner and operator of Long Curb Market on North Ireland Street. He attended Whitsett Baptist Church.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Mrs. Junior (Teresa) Hyatt of Graham; three sons, Mr. Scott Long of the home, Mr. Michael Long of Graham and Mr. Richard 'Ricky' Long of Burlington; a sister, Mrs. Elsie Harper of Durham; four brothers, Mr. James Long, Mr. Lawrence Long, Mr. Bobby Long and Mr. Johnny Snead, all of Burlington; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Mr. Harvey Long.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Rich and Thompson Chapel in Graham by the Rev. Tim Stevens and the Rev. Brad Griese, co-pastors of Whitsett Baptist Church. Burial will be in McCray Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will be at Rich and Thompson Funeral Home in Graham from 7 to 9 Saturday evening, and at other times at the home.

Mr. Purvis Oliver
BURLINGTON - Mr. Purvis Oliver, 89, of 315 Flushing St., died Tuesday, March 24, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after several years of failing health.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Una Mae Griffis Oliver, who survives, and the son of Mr. Sidney Oliver and Mrs. Celia Thompson Oliver, both deceased. He was a member of Queen's Chapel AME Church.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include a brother, Mr. Elwood Oliver of Burlington.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Queen's Chapel AME Church by the Rev. W.H. Morrison, pastor. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Burial will be in North Lawn Cemetery.
The family will be at Hargett and Bryant Funeral Home in Burlington from 7 to 8 this evening.
Mr. William Nichols Jr.
ELON COLLEGE - Mr. William Curtis 'Bill' Nichols Jr., 66, of 513 Brookview Drive, died Thursday morning, March 26, 1998, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill after a short illness.
A native of Biltmore, S.C., he was the husband of the late Mrs. Josephine Coleman Nichols, and the son of Mr. William Curtis Nichols Sr. and Mrs. Myrtle McCurry Nichols, both deceased. He was an employee of J.C. Penny Department Stores as divisional coordinator for the home division. He was a member of Nor'Kirk Presbyterian Church in Dallas and attended St. Mark's Reformed Church.
Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Laura Baker of Greenville, S.C., Dr. Hillary Carroll of Elon College, Mrs. Nancy Willard of Jamestown and Mrs. Patricia Nichols-Kriebel of Lewisville, Texas; a son, Mr. Frederick W. Nichols of Ciba, Puerto Rico; a sister, Mrs. Margaret Evelyn Oswald of Sarasota, Fla.; and nine grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at St. Mark's Reformed Church by the Rev. Robert M. Disher Jr., pastor. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.
The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 6 to 8 Saturday evening, and at other times at the home of a daughter, Dr. Hillary Carroll, 102 Pin Oak Court, Elon College.

Mr. George Richmond
BURLINGTON - Mr. George H. 'Stingaring' Richmond of 455 Elmira St., died at 2 p.m. March 23, 1998 after a long illness.
A native of Caswell County, he was the husband of the late Mrs. Annie Belle Tate, and son of the late Mrs. Mary Jane Richmond. He was a farmer and a custodian at Annedeen Hosiery.
Survivors include three sons, Mr. John David Richmond, Mr. James Edward Richmond and Mr. Bruce Hester Richmond, all of Burlington; a daughter, Ms. Mary Ann Richmond of Burlington; nine grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Mr. William Henry Richmond; two daughters, Ms. Mattie Bell Richmond and Mrs. Fannie C. Richmond; a brother, Mr. Rudy Richmond; and two sisters, Mrs. Hattie Yellock and Mrs. Mattie Yellock.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Sharpe Memorial Chapel by Elder Herman Long, pastor of Sweet Grum Grove Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Hilda C. Guthrie
GRAHAM - Mrs. Hilda Chappell Guthrie, 77, of 1818 S. Main St., died at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, March 26, 1998, at the Hospice Home after two years of failing health, three days critical.
A native of Wake County, she was the wife of Mr. James A. 'Jimmy' Guthrie, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Mack Cecil Chappell and Mrs. Kelly Cotton Chappell, both deceased. She was retired from J. Spencer Love and was a charter member of Christ United Methodist Church in Graham.
Survivors other than her husband of the home include a daughter, Mrs. Barbara Gail Forbis of Burlington; two sons, Mr. James A. 'Chuck' Guthrie Jr. and Mr. Michael Keith 'Mike' Guthrie, both of Graham; a brother, Mr. Ervin Chappell of Morehead City; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Ms. Mae Kelly; and three brothers, Mr. Ernest Chappell, Mr. Cecil Chappell and Mr. Rupert Chappell.
The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Christ United Methodist Church by Dr. James L. Bryan, pastor. Burial will be in Graham Memorial Park.

Mrs. Bessie Shropshire
WINSTON-SALEM - Mrs. Bessie Shouse Shropshire, 92, died Wednesday, March 25, 1998, at her home after several years of failing health.
Born Jan. 14, 1906, in Forsyth County, she was the wife for 60 years of John Lee Shropshire, who died in 1986. She was the daughter of Mr. William Jefferson Shouse and Mrs. Mary Elizabeth 'Molly' Lineback Shouse, both deceased. She had lived in Forsyth County all her life. She was a 1924 graduate of Bethania High School and a 1925 graduate of Oldtown High School. She was a member of Beck's Baptist Church.
Survivors include three sons, Mr. Donald G. Shropshire of Tucson, Ariz., Mr. J. Douglas Shropshire of Mebane and Mr. Kent S. Shropshire of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Ms. Lucille Gaultney and Mrs. Jim (Louise 'Pat') Dillworth, both of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Mr. Paul L. Shouse and Mr. E. Edd Shouse.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Beck's Baptist Church by Dr. James Nelson and the Rev. Cyrus Bush. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Forsyth Memorial Park.

Mrs. Josephine Umstead
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Josephine Graham Umstead, 88, of 266 Altamahaw-Union Ridge Road, died at 2:35 a.m. Friday, March 27, 1998, at her home, after several months of failing health, one week critical.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Samuel Monroe Turner and the late Mr. A. Wadell Umstead. She was the daughter of Mr. George Robert Graham and Mrs. Fannie Tapscott Graham, both deceased. She attended Appalachian State Teachers College and graduated cum laude from Lincoln Memorial University in Harragate, Tenn., in 1930. She taught in several schools in Alamance County for more than 40 years before retiring from Pleasant Grove School. She was a member of Union Ridge United Church of Christ, where she taught Sunday School for many years and was a member of the Angie Crew Circle. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Mildred Davis and Mrs. Doris Pender, both of Burlington; and two brothers, Mr. Louis Graham and Mr. Victor Graham, both of Burlington.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Ms. Claudia Graham Fox, Ms. Kara Lee Graham and Ms. Thelma Graham Hurdle; and a brother, Mr. James Paul Graham.
The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Union Ridge United Church of Christ by the Rev. Phil Hardy, pastor, and the Rev. John Settlemyre, former pastor. The body will be placed in the church two hours before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at the church at 2 p.m. Sunday, and at other times at the home of Ms. Gilda Ozment and Ms. Charlotte Ozment, 177 Altamahaw-Union Ridge Road, Burlington.

BURLINGTON - Juante Yannico Gonzalez, infant son of Mr. Juan Gonzalez and Ms. Carmela 'Candy' Crisp Gonzalez, died at 2:25 p.m. Wednesday, March 25, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.
He was a native of Alamance County.
Survivors other than his parents of 2322 LaVista Drive, House 10, include two brothers, Juan Gonzalez III and Delancy Vaughn, both of the home; a sister, Tiffani Latimer of Burlington; maternal grandparents, Mr. Curtis Crisp and Mrs. Wilma Crisp of Mebane; and paternal grandparents, Mr. Juan Gonzalez Sr. of Washington, D.C., and Ms. Shirley Gonzalez of Burlington.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. today [Saturday] at Mebane Community cemetery by the Rev. Robert Brewington.

MEBANE - Mr. Larry James Poole, 62, of 5407 Lynch Store Road, died at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 27, 1998, at his home after a sudden illness.

Mr. Luther Corbett
CEDAR GROVE - Mr. Luther Corbett, 90, died Thursday, March 26, 1998, at Chapel Hill Rehabilitation Center.
Born Aug. 8, 1907, he was the husband of Mrs. Elizabeth Evans Corbett, who survives, and the son of Mr. Burie 'Doc' Corbett and Mrs. Nannie Pennix Corbett, both deceased. He was a lifelong tobacco farmer. He was a member and deacon at Deep Creek Primitive Baptist Church in the McCray Community of Burlington.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include three daughters, Ms. Carolyn Walker and Ms. Inise Degraffenreidt, both of Mebane, and Ms. Patty S. Corbett of Chapel Hill; three sons, Mr. Junious L. Corbett of Mebane, Mr. Ronald L. Corbett of Green Level and Mr. Harold L. Corbett of Burlington; three brother, Mr. Plese Corbett of Burlington, Mr. George Corbett of Hillsborogh and Mr. Claude Corbett of Cedar Grove; five sisters, Ms. Nina Breeze, Ms. Zenobia Taylor and Ms. Gertrude Askew, all of Cedar Grove, Ms. Odell Prince of Virginia and Ms. Martha Nichols of Hillsborough; eight grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Mr. Wadell Corbett.

GREENSBORO - Mr. Charles Michael Cohen, 40, of 1007 Sunburst Lane, died Thursday, March 26, 1998, at Moses H. Cone Hospital.
Born Dec. 18, 1957, in Burlington, he was the son of Mr. Mickey Cohen who survives and the late Mrs. Opal Jean Howerton Cohen. He was employed in bridge maintenance with the N.C. Department of Transportation and was a member of Son-Light Baptist Church in Asheboro.
Survivors other than his wife of the home and his father of Fort Worth, Texas, include one daughter, Ms. Carla Jean Cohen of the home; and one brother, Mr. Tim Taylor of Fort Worth, Texas.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Lambeth-Troxler Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Westminster Gardens.
