Mrs. Edna T. Torain
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Edna Earl Thompson Torain, 76, of 1212 Stout St., died Saturday morning, April 11, 1998, at Wesley Long Hospital in Greensboro after a critical illness of one month.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Dewitt June Torain, and the daughter of Mr. Walter Thompson and Mrs. Josephine Boone Thompson, both deceased. She was a member of Queen's Chapel AME Church, where she was a member of the Senior Choir, the Pastor's Aid Club, the Steward Board, the Trustee Board and the Missionary Society.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Joan T. McCollum of the home and Miss Jackie Torain of Burlington; two sons, Mr. Devore 'Freddie' Torain and Mr. Edward L. Torain, both of White Plains, N.Y.; a sister, Mrs. Nellie T. Troxler of Burlington; 13 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Queen's Chapel AME Church by the Rev. W.H. Morrison, pastor. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Burial will be in North Lawn Cemetery.
The family will be at Hargett and Bryant Funeral Home from 7 to 8 Tuesday evening, and at other times at the home.
Mr. Charles O. Brooks
HILLSBOROUGH - Mr. Charles O'Conner 'Skeeter' Brooks, 39, died Friday, April 10, 1998.
Born May 5, 1953, in Orange County, he was the son of Mr. Charles Brooks and Mrs. Elizabeth Brooks, who both survive.
Survivors other than his parents of Hillsborough include five sons, Mr. Gregory Brooks Drumwright of Burlington, Mr. Travis McAdoo of Miami, Mr. Charles O'Conner Brooks Jr. of Hillsborough, Mr. Corey Dixon of Durham and Mr. Charles Javon Eubanks of Chapel Hill; three brothers, Mr. Timothy Ray 'Beaver' Brooks, Mr. Swantee D. 'Chyenne' Brooks and Mr. Danny Brooks, all of the home; three sisters, Ms. Phyllis B. Bolden of Durham, Ms. Eleanor B. Smith and Ms. Darlene Williams, both of Hillsborough; and four grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at First Community Baptist Church by the Rev. William Richardson, pastor. Burial will be in Hillsborough Town Cemetery.
The family will be at the church one hour before the service.

Mrs. Helen L. Brown
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Helen McLaughlin Brown, 99, of 1128 Plaid St., died at 7:45 a.m. Saturday, April 11, 1998, at the Hospice Home after a critical illness of one week.
A native of Brookfield, Mass., she was the wife of the late Mr. Walter Silas Brown, and the daughter of Mr. Michael McLaughlin and Mrs. Viola Howe McLaughlin, both deceased. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Betty Romano of Worcester, Mass., Ms. Maxine Granville of Gibsonville, Mrs. Hope Phillips of the home and Mrs. Carole Kelliher of Marion; a son, Mr. Russell Granville of Worcester; 14 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Monday at McClure Funeral Home Chapel in Burlington by Dr. Howard Thompson, pastor of Burlington Assembly of God. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.
The family will be at the funeral home from 1 to 3 Monday afternoon, and at other times at the home.

Mr. John Bright
GRAHAM - Mr. John Bright, 76, of 153 Southern High School Road, died at 4:15 p.m. Friday, April 10, 1998, at White Oak Manor in Burlington after several years of failing health, one week critical.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Helen Wilkerson Bright, who survives, and the son of Mr. Dewitt Bright and Mrs. Mae Coble Bright, both deceased. He was a retired carpenter and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Mt. Hermon United Methodist Church.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Mrs. Tracy Bright Johnson of Burlington; three sisters, Mrs. Boyd (Hazelene) Bright Coble and Mrs. Edith Bright Ireland, both of Burlington, and Ms. Edna Bright Glosson of Graham; two brothers, Mr. Howard Bright and Mr. Donald Bright, both of Graham; and one grandchild.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Ms. Trudy Bright, and a brother, Mr. Otis Bright.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Mt. Hermon United Methodist Church by the Rev. Rick Moser, pastor. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at other times at the home.

Mrs. Dora S. Kennedy
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Dora Wilma Sanders Kennedy, 75, of 4501 Alamance Baptist Church Loop Road, died at 3 a.m. Saturday, April 11, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after three months of failing health, two weeks critical.
A native of Chatham County, she was the wife of Mr. Howard Duncan Kennedy, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Ned Sanders and Mrs. Nettie Wallace Sanders, both deceased. She was retired from Holt Manufacturing Company and was a member of First Baptist Church in Alamance.
Survivors other than her husband of the home include a daughter, Mrs. Carolyn K. Brumley of Burlington; a son, Mr. Charles Garner of Graham; three sisters, Ms. Evelyn Spivey, Ms. Ethel Rouse and Ms. Kathlene Caviness, all of Robbins; a brother, the Rev. Gyles Saunders of Seagrove; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Ms. Elizabeth Maxine Kennedy; a sister, Ms. Elizabeth Bruce; a brother, Mr. James Sanders; and a grandchild.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Alamance Memorial Park by the Rev. Dale Cain, pastor of First Baptist Church, and the Rev. Gyles Saunders.
The family will be at Lowe Funeral Home from 7 to 9 Monday evening, and at other times at the home of the son, 2430 N.C. 87 South, Graham.

Mrs. Elizabeth G. Jones
GIBSONVILLE - Mrs. Elizabeth Gasque Jones, 66, of 313 Owens St., died at 11:48 p.m. Saturday, April 11, 1998, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro.
A native of Marion County, S.C., she was the wife of Mr. James Middleton Jones, who died in 1988, and the daughter of Mr. Harry French Gasque and Mrs. Leona Gasque Gerringer, both deceased. She was retired from Engineered Controls in Elon College and was employed in the Ladies Department at Sears. She was a member of Gibsonville Christian Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Dawn Jones Coller of Elon College; one son, Mr. J. Lynn Jones of Hunting Beach, Calif.; two brothers, Mr. Lenward Gasque of Greensboro and Mr. Frank Gasque of Gibsonville; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her stepfather, Mr. Charlie 'Jim' Gerringer.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Gibsonville Christian Church by the Rev. Paul Morton, pastor, and the Rev. John Browne, pastor of Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Gibsonville City Cemetery.

Mr. Joseph D. Medley
GRAHAM - Mr. Joseph 'Joey' Dwayne Medley, 21, of Brown's Trailer Park, Lot 4, N.C. 54, died Sunday, April 12, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Davene Byrum Medley, who survives, and the son of Mr. Billy Wayne Medley of Haw River and Ms. Lois Jean Horner Shumaker of Burlington, who both survive. He was employed by William Ray King Construction Co., and was a Baptist.
Survivors other than his wife of the home and his parents include one son, Mr. Michael Shane Medley of the home; one stepdaughter, Miss Harley Byrum of Graham; a stepfather, Mr. William Ray King of Prospect Hill; paternal grandparents, Mr. Robert Medley and Mrs. Marie Medley of Elon College; one stepsister, Mrs. Jennifer King Wilkerson of Haw River; and one stepbrother, Mr. Randall Russell King of Snow Camp.
He was preceded in death by maternal grandparents, Mr. Harvey Horner and Mrs. Francis Edwards Horner; and a sister, Miss Teresa Lynn Medley.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Oakwood cemetery in Mebane.

Mr. Ernest W. Haith
MEBANE - Mr. Ernest Walter Haith, 68, of 8908 Harmony Church Road, died at 6:35 p.m. Saturday, April 11, 1998, at his home after an illness of one year.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Agnes Crews Haith, who survives, and the son of Mrs. Mary Holt Haith, who survives, and the late Mr. Levi Walter Haith. He was a retired employee of General Electric in Mebane and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of Florence Memorial Baptist Church.
Survivors other than his wife of the home and his mother of Mebane include two stepdaughters, Mrs. Betty Bowes and Mrs. Carolyn Wren, both of Burlington; one stepson, Mr. Cliford Brown of Hickory; three sisters, Mrs. Lillian Marie Sanders of Kansas City, Mo., Mrs. Ida Lee Haithcock of Haw River and Mrs. Tanya Ann Hall of Mebane; three brothers, Mr. George Robert Haith of Chapel Hill, Mr. David Lindy Haith of Mebane and Mr. Walter Lee Haith of Burlington; 14 step grandchildren; and 15 stepgreat-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at McClure Funeral Home Chapel in Mebane by the Rev. James L. Florence, pastor of Florence Memorial Baptist Church. Burial will be in Mount Zion Christian Church cemetery.

Mr. Frank Smith
LEASBURG - Mr. Charles Franklin 'Frank' Smith, 88, of 521 Frank Smith Road died Sunday, April 12, 1998, at Person County Memorial Hospital after a period of failing health.
A native of Caswell County, he was the husband of Mrs. Carrie Hughes Smith, who survives, and the son of Mr. Charles C. Smith and Mrs. Berta Harris Smith, both deceased. He was a retired farmer. He was a charter member of the Leasburg Ruritan Club where he held many offices and was Ruritan of the Year in 1976, 1978 and 1990. He was Ruritan Man of the Year in 1986, and his family was named the 1976 Ruritan Family of the Year. He was a member and elder at Griers Presbyterian Church and served as clerk of sessions.
Survivors other than his wife of the Brian Center in Yanceyville include one daughter, Ms. Annette McDuffie of Leasburg; one son, Mr. Charles D. Smith of Leasburg; one sister, Ms. Sue Lindley of Burlington; four grandchildren; three-great-grandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Griers Presbyterian Church by the Rev. William Chappell. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at Hooper Funeral Home in Yanceyville from 7 to 8:30 p.m. this evening and at other times at the home of the daughter at 51 Frank Smith Road.
