John H. Owens
STOVALL - Senior Chief Petty Officer John Hammit Owens (Ret.), 63, of 220 U.S. 15 North, died Saturday, April 11, 1998, at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill.
A native of Granville County, he was husband of Mrs. Delia Hart Owens, who survives, and the son of Mr. John A. Owens and Mrs. Martha Guerrant Owens, both deceased. He was a member of Stovall Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher. He served in the U.S. Navy for 20 years, including tours of duty in Vietnam.
Survivors other than his wife include three sons, Mr. John R. Owens of Altoona, Pa., Mr. Mike Owens of Stovall and Mr. Chris Owens of the home; one daughter, Ms. Robbin O. Newman of Chesapeake, Va.; two brothers, Mr. Clarence Owens of Gibsonville and Mr. James Thomas Owens of Stem; one sister, Mrs. Margaret O. Hart of Stovall; and five grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Stovall Baptist Church by the Rev. John W. Yount and the Rev. Roy Newton. Burial will be in Stovall Memorial cemetery with military honors.
The body will be taken to the home where the family will receive friends.

Mrs. Eulila C. Farmer
GRAHAM - Mrs. Eulila Creasy Farmer, 80, of 1038 N.C. 54, Swepsonville Road, died at 12:40 a.m. Sunday, April 12, 1998, at Mission Memorial Hospital in Asheville after 10 years of failing health, one week critical.
A native of Bedford County, Va., she was the wife of the late Mr. Benjamin Davis Farmer, and the daughter of Mr. Minter Creasy and Mrs. Eddie Maude Creasy. She was a retired textile worker and a member of Swepsonville Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Miss Lois Farmer of Burlington; two sons, the Rev. Ben D. Farmer Jr. of Graham and Mr. Robert Minter Farmer of Rapid City, S.D.; one brother, Mr. Richard Creasy of California; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Ms. Jeanie Farmer.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at McClure Funeral Home Chapel in Graham by the Rev. Ben D. Farmer Jr. Burial will be in Phillips Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery.
The family will be at McClure Funeral Home in Graham from 7 to 9 this evening and at other times at the home of the son, the Rev. Ben D. Farmer Jr., 508 Wentworth Drive, Graham.
Mr. John W. Frank Jr.
BURLINGTON - Mr. John W. 'Boats' Frank Jr., 77, of 3575 Garden Road, died Saturday, April 4, 1998, at his home.
A native of Anson County, he was the husband of Mrs. Sandra Frank, who survives, and the son of Mr. John Wesley Frank Sr. and Mrs. Etta Bowman Frank, both deceased. He was a retired federal contracting officer and formerly worked at Western Electric.
He was a member of the Burlington Masonic Lodge 721 AF&AM, a member of the Scottish Rite Valley of Greensboro and a member of Amran Temple of Raleigh. He was a member of Burlington Shrine Club where he was a former chairman for the Crippled and Burned Children's Hospital. He was a member of the Alamance Senior Golf Association and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Haw River and the Lila Harder Sunday School Class.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include one daughter, Mrs. Vickie Boggs of Haw River; one son, Mr. Jeffrey Frank of Raleigh; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Sherrin Hecht and Mrs. Susan Peters, both of Jacksonville Beach, Fla.; one stepson, Mr. William Colley of Sacramento, Calif.; three sisters, Mrs. Robert ('Lil') Scott of Elon College, Mrs. Ione Squires of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., and Mrs. Frances Moser of Archdale; one brother, Mr. Lee Frank of Chicago; three grandchildren; eight step grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church of Haw River by the Rev. Richard Poindexter, pastor, and the Rev. M. Kenneth Wilson. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.

Mr. Jimmy R. Clayton
GRAHAM - Mr. Jimmy Russell Clayton, 53, of 4656 Cedar Cliff Road, died at 2:50 a.m. Sunday, April 5, 1998, at the home of his sister, Ms. Rebecca Collins, 1321 Granville St., Burlington, after 18 months of failing health, two months critical.
A native of Person County, he was the son of Mr. Bert Coleman Clayton and Mrs. Dora Crabtree Clayton, both deceased. He was former owner of the Car Shop Food and Dairy. He was a member of the Burlington Moose Lodge and a U.S. Army veteran. He attended Burlington Assembly of God.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Sherri Moore of Burlington; two sisters, Mrs. Rebecca C. Collins and Mrs. Patsy C. Duffer, both of Burlington; two brothers, Mr. Richard C. Clayton of Burlington and Mr. Billy M. Clayton of Haw River; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Rich and Thompson Chapel in Graham by Dr. Howard Thompson, pastor of Burlington Assembly of God. Burial will be in Graham Memorial Park.

Mr. Sylvester Murray
GRAHAM - Mr. Sylvester 'Ves' H. Murray, 81, of 135 Webster Road, died at 10:28 a.m. Sunday, April 5, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after an illness of three weeks.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Mary Cooke Murray, who survives, and the son of Mr. Clyde Murray and Mrs. Lou Dora Loy Murray, both deceased. He was a member of Belmont Baptist Church, where was a former deacon and trustee and a member of the Adult Sunday School Class. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include three sisters, Mrs. Lucille Parrish of Greensboro, and Mrs. Jim (Hallie) McCulloch and Mrs. Ken (Lillie) Robbins, both of Burlington; two brothers, Mr. Luther Murray of Burlington and Mr. Joe Murray of Elon College.
The funeral will be conducted at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Rich and Thompson Chapel in Graham by the Rev. Larry Janey, pastor of Belmont Baptist Church, and the Rev. Willard Janey, supply pastor, Graham Friends Church. Burial will be in Belmont Baptist Church cemetery.

Mr. Andrew Scarborough Jr.
RALEIGH - Mr. Andrew Goodwin Scarborough Jr., 69, died Sunday, April 5, 1998, after four years of failing health.
He was born April 18, 1928, in Eagle Rock. He was the husband for 50 years of Mrs. Jean Daniel Scarborough, who survives, and the son of Mr. A.G. Scarborough Sr. and Mrs. Mavis Richardson Scarborough, both deceased. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His career was in the audio-visual field: 12 years with Bell & Howell in Chicago; 24 years with Stone's School Supply in Raleigh; and with Camera Corner, headquartered in Burlington. He was a U.S. Marine veteran and was an active member of North Ridge Alliance Church in Raleigh.
Survivors other than his wife include three daughters, Ms. Judith Baker of Charlotte, Ms. Andrea Coghlan of Winfield, Ill., and Ms. Nancy Jo McKinnis of Point Harbour; one brother, Mr. Robert E. Scarborough of Winston-Salem; and three grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at North Ridge Alliance Church.

Ms. Viola Garrison
GRAHAM - Ms. Viola Garrison, 80, of 508 W. Harden St., died Sunday, April 5, 1998, at Brian Center in Yanceyville after a long illness.
A native of Caswell County, she was the daughter of Mr. William Lee Jefferson and Mrs. Annie Warren Jefferson, both deceased. She was a member of Glen Raven Baptist Church.
Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Shelby Campbell and Mrs. Joe Clark, both of Burlington, Mrs. Maxine Joyce of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Mrs. Christine Pugh of Marietta, Ga.; two sons, Mr. Wayne Lambert and Mr. Monroe Lambert, both of Reidsville; two sisters, Mrs. Mamie Dyson and Mrs. Lillie Mae Barts, both of Reidsville; one brother, Mr. Woodrow Jefferson of Reidsville; six grandchildren; and nine-great-grandchildren.

Mr. Arnold L. Carter
YANCEYVILLE - Mr. Arnold Lee Carter, 58, of 1073 U.S. Hwy. 158 East, died Sunday, April 5, 1998, at Vencor Hospital in Greensboro after several years of failing health.
Born July 19, 1939 in Rockingham County, he was the son of Mrs. Alice Matlock Carter, who survives, and the late Mr. Cable George Carter Sr. He owned and operated Carter's Used Auto Parts and attended Ebenezer Primitive Baptist Church.
Survivors other than his mother of the home include two brothers, Mr. Luke Carter of Yanceyville and Mr. C.G. Carter Jr. of Mebane.
A graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Ebenezer Primitive Baptist Church cemetery by the Rev. Mark Smith.
The family will be at Marley Funeral Home Inc. in Yanceyville from 7 to 8:30 this evening, and at other times at the home.
Mr. Homer B. Walker
GIBSONVILLE - Mr. Homer Bland Walker, 76, of 6085 N.C. 87 North, died at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 14, 1998, at his home after an illness of seven months.
A native of Caswell County, he was the husband of Mrs. Mary Williamson Walker, who survives, and the son of Mr. George Weldon Walker and Mrs. Annie Sartin Walker, both deceased. He was formerly employed with Glen Raven Mills and later retired from Annedeen Hosiery. He was a former member of Altamahaw Civitan Club and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of Camp Springs United Methodist Church.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include two sons, Mr. Bill Walker and Mr. Ken Walker, both of Elon College; three brothers, Mr. George W. Walker Jr. and Mr. Samuel Walker, both of Reidsville and Mr. John Mitchell Walker of Ruffin; one sister, Mrs. Mildred W. Combs of Gibsonville; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Mr. Charles Williamson Walker; two sisters, Mrs. Mae Hodges and Mrs. Rena Underwood; and one brother, Mr. Raymond Walker.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Camp Springs United Methodist Church by the Rev. Charles Litzenberger, pastor, and the Rev. C. Allen Myers, pastor of Apple's Chapel Christian Church. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in the Camp Springs Methodist Church cemetery.

GRAHAM - Mrs. Mattie Belle Cook Stout, 87, formerly of Swepsonville Road, died at 12:15 a.m. Tuesday, April 14, 1998, at Brookshire Nursing Home in Hillsborough after five years of failing health, one week critical.
A native of Guilford County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Lester C. Stout, and the daughter of Mr. Lawrence Lee Cooke and Mrs. Dolly Russell Cooke, both deceased. She was retired from Kayser Roth and was a member of Hico Baptist Church.
Survivors include a stepdaughter, Mrs. Donald (Peggy) Faucette of Mebane; a stepson, Mr. Clarence Stout of Graham; six sisters, Mrs. Louise C. Isley and Mrs. Nellie C. Massey, both of Burlington, Mrs. Annie C. Shepherd of Chapel Hill, Mrs. Peggy C. Cauthren of Greensboro, and Mrs. Mary Lois C. Murray and Mrs. Patty C. Parrish, both of Graham; two brothers, Mr. Hurley F. Cooke and Mr. R. Lynn Cooke, both of Burlington; five step grandchildren; and four great-step grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Doris C. Hogan; and two brothers, Mr. Dwight L. Cook and Mr. Kermit R. Cook.

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Mildred Edwards Long, 75, of 2514 Saddle Club Road, died at 12:40 p.m. Tuesday, April 14, 1998, at her home after 10 years of failing health.
A native of Wilmington, she was the wife of Mr. Grady B. Long Sr., who survives, and the daughter of Mr. George Albert Edwards and Mrs. Fannie Brickhouse Edwards, both deceased. She was a charter member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church and was a member of the United Methodist Women.
Survivors other than her husband of the home include a son, Mr. Grady B. Long Jr. of Burlington; two daughters, Ms. Mary Beth Long of Burlington and Mrs. James (Ann) Oldham of Elon College; and a grandchild.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Mr. Alton Edwards, Mr. Curtis Edwards and Mr. William R. Edwards; and a sister, Ms. Adelia Ann Edwards Wilkins.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Paul's United Methodist Church by the Rev. Skip Williams, pastor. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.
