Mr. Joseph J. West
SOUTHERN PINES - Mr. Joseph Johnson West, 78, of Southern Pines died Monday, April 20, 1998, at St. Joseph of the Pines East Campus.
Survivors include two sons, Mr. Dennis West and Mr. Lee West, both of Vass and formerly of the Burlington area; a daughter, Ms. Margaret Straseski of Carthage and formerly of the Burlington area; a sister, Ms. Caro W. Cameron of Southern Pines; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Mr. Thomas Jefferson West, in January 1998.
The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday at Mount Pleasant United Church of Christ by Dr. Winford Bray. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at Powell Funeral Home and Crematory in Southern Pines from 7 to 9 this evening.
Mr. Edward Sutton Sr.
LEXINGTON - Mr. Edward Harold Sutton Sr., 76, of 314 Arbor Drive died Tuesday, April 21, 1998, at Lexington Memorial Hospital.
Born Jan. 26, 1922, in Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Kathryn Wilson Sutton, who survives, and the son of Mr. William Sutton and Mrs. Daisy Elizabeth Gentry Sutton, both deceased. He was retired from Binnings Building Products Inc. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and was a member of the American Legion. He was a member of Spruce Street Baptist Church.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include two daughters, Ms. Sue McNutt of Chino Valley, Ariz., and Ms. Betty Schmieder of Charlotte; a son, Mr. Edward Sutton Jr. of Burlington; two sisters, Ms. Fannie Ida Burrus of Knoxville, Tenn., and Ms. Eloise Brantley of Burlington; a brother, Mr. Bill Sutton Jr. of Gaffney, S.C.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday in Timberlake Chapel at Piedmont Funeral Home by the Rev. Noah Frye. A graveside service will be conducted at 4 p.m. at Providence Memorial Park in Graham.
The family will be at Piedmont Funeral Home from 7 to 9 this evening and at other times at the home.
Mrs. Helen J. Wright
HAW RIVER - Mrs. Helen Jones Wright, 96, of 3166 Mt. Willen Road, died at 3:45 a.m. Tuesday, April 21, 1998, at White Oak Manor after several years of failing health.
A native of St. Louis, Mo., she was the wife of the late Mr. Preston Cameron Wright, and the daughter of Mr. Edwin S. Jones and Mrs. Mary Trollinger Jones, both deceased. She was a retired hosiery employee.
Survivors include four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Mr. Earl Cameron Wright.
No services will be held.

Mrs. Hazel A. Capps
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Hazel Allred Capps, 88, of Alamance Skilled Nursing Division, 730 Hermitage Road, died at 8:45 a.m. Tuesday, April 21, 1998, at her home after one year of failing health.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Mr. John William Capps, and the daughter of Mr. Frank Allred and Mrs. Daisy Pearl Allred, both deceased. She was a member of Antioch Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Daisy A. Matkins of Greensboro and Mrs. Rose Marie Peacemaker of Reidsville; two sons, Mr. Daniel Curtis Capps of Swepsonville and Mr. Donald Ray Capps of Mebane; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Mr. Johnny Arthur Capps and Mr. Leroy Capps.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Baynes Baptist Church by the Rev. Larry McCarty, pastor. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 7 to 9 this evening and at other times at the home of Mr. Donald Ray Capps, 92 Capps-Gunn Drive, Mebane.
Mrs. Sandra T. Fuqua
REIDSVILLE - Mrs. Sandra Jean Turner Fuqua, 37, of 1733 Turner Road, died Monday, April 20, 1998, at Annie Penn Memorial Hospital.
A native of Rockingham County, she was the wife of Mr. Edward O. Fuqua Jr., who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Napoleon Turner and Mrs. Elsie Pruitt Turner, who both survive. She was employed at Glen Raven Mills, Glen Touch Division. She was a member of Ashland Road Baptist Church.
Survivors other than her husband of the home and parents of Reidsville include a daughter, Ms. Liza Tuner of the home; three stepsons, Mr. Edward Fuqua III of Graham, and Mr. James Albert Fuqua and Mr. Gary Lee Fuqua, both of Reidsville; two sisters, Ms. Joyce Gravely and Ms. Vickie McGraw, both of Reidsville; four brothers, Mr. Napoleon Turner Jr. and Mr. J.W. Turner, both of Pelham, and Mr. Robert Turner and Mr. James Turner, both of Reidsville; and five grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Ashland Road Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at Wilkerson Funeral Home from 7 to 9 this evening and at other times at the home.
Mrs. Frances G. Leigh
YANCEYVILLE - Mrs. Frances Loraine Garrison Leigh, 77, of 108 cemetery St., died Monday, April 20, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center in Danville, Va.
Born Nov. 16, 1921, in Caswell County, she was the wife of Mr. John Nemrod Leigh, who died in 1984, and the daughter of Mr. Andrew Jackson Garrison and Mrs. Ester Davis Garrison, both deceased. She was retired from Hanover Mills Inc. and was a member of Community Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Ms. Vickie Lynn Webster of Yanceyville; a son, Mr. Brodie Banks King of Yanceyville; and a grandchild.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Community Baptist Church cemetery by the Rev. Mark Smith.
The family will be at Marley Funeral Home from 7 to 8:30 this evening and at other times at the home.

BEAR CREEK - Mrs. Iner Mae Marsh Johnson, 73, died Tuesday, April 21, 1998, in Corona, N.Y.
She was a native of Bear Creek.

Mrs. Bernice S. Beam
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Bernice 'Tincey' Steele Beam, 62, of 4048 N.C. 62 South, died at 6:40 a.m. Friday, April 24, 1998, at her home.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of Mr. Johnny David Beam Sr., who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Joe Steele and Mrs. Annie York Steele, both deceased. She was a member of Belmont Baptist Church.
Survivors other than her husband of the home include three daughters, Miss Marie Beam of the home and Miss Alice Dodson and Mrs. Ann Williams, both of Elon College; a son, Mr. Gene Beam of Burlington; three sisers, Mrs. Ruby Bowman of Kimesville, Mrs. Melbadean Bailey of Greensboro and Mrs. Loretta Wheeley of Haw River; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Mr. David Beam Jr.
A graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Belmont Baptist Church cemetery by Dr. Tommy Richardson, pastor of Bible Baptist Church.

Mr. James Watlington
BURLINGTON - Mr. James Edward 'Crunch' Watlington of 1218 Melrose Drive, died Thursday, April 23, 1998, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.
A native of Caswell County, he was the husband of Mrs. Jackie Watlington, who survives, and the son of Mr. William Henry Watlington and Mrs. Mamie Russell Watlington, both deceased. He was a backhoe operator with Burlington Mechanicals.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include four daughters, Ms. Andril Watlington of Graham, Ms. Kimberly Watlington, Ms. Cierra Watlington and Ms. Maya Torain, all of Burlington; three brothers, Mr. George Watlington and Mr. Dennis Watlington, both of Caswell County, and Mr. William Watlington of Mebane; five sisters, Mrs. Gracie Turner of Burlington, Ms. Lola Belle Watlington and Mrs. Shirley Thompson, both of Gibsonville, Mrs. Minnie Pearl Fuller of Caswell County and Mrs. Mamie Elizabeth Thompson of Yanceyville; and six grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Blackwell Baptist Church by the Rev. Everett Dickerson, pastor, and the Rev. Kenneth Walker. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Martha Hathaway
CHARLOTTE - Mrs. Martha Lane McClure Hathaway, 60, of Charlotte, died Thursday, April 23, 1998.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of Mr. Kent Stuart Hathaway, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Griffin McClure Sr., both deceased. She was an office assistant for C. Scott Davenport, D.D.S. She was a member of Myers Park Presbyterian Church for 30 years. She was a member of the Community Bible Study, the Barclay Downs and Olde Providence Tennis Teams and a volunteer with Friendship Trays, and Loaves and Fish.
Survivors other than her husband of the home include two sons, Mr. Griff Hathaway and Mr. Stuart Hathaway, both of Charlotte; a daughter, Miss Holt Hathaway of Charlotte; a sister, Mrs. Mary E. Phillips of Graham; and a brother, Mr. James Griffin McClure Sr. of Graham.
The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Myers Park Presbyterian Church.
The family will be at the church after the service.

HICKORY - Mr. Michael Earl Burns, 28, of Hickory, died Thursday, April 23, 1998, in Rock Hill, S.C., in an automobile accident.
He married
Mrs. Michelle Wagoner Burns, who survives, April 18, 1998. He was the son of Mr. Earl Burns and Mrs. Nancy Johnson Burns, who both survive. He was a graduate of Edesto High School in Cordova, S.C., and attended Appalachian State University in Boone.
Survivors other than his wife of the home and parents of Hickory include two brothers, the Rev. Edward Burns of Hickory and Mr. Christopher Burns of Madison, Ala.; a sister, Mrs. Jo Ann Abee of Valdese; and paternal grandmother, Mrs. Mae Burns of Hickory.

GIBSONVILLE - Jonathan William Terry, 2, of 122 Painter Lakes Road, died Friday, April 24, 1998, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.
A native of Guilford County, he was the son of Mr. William John Terry and Mrs. Michele Lee Terry, who both survive. He was a member of Bethel Presbyterian Church.
Survivors other than his parents of the home include maternal grandparents, Mr. Ron Lee and Mrs. Linda Lee of Gibsonville; paternal grandmother, Mrs. Judy Hankins of McLeansville; paternal great-grandparents, Mr. Roger Gerringer and Mrs. Bronna Gerringer of Gibsonville; and maternal great-grandfather, Mr. Luby Lee of Burlington.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Mr. John A. Terry.
