BURLINGTON - Mrs. Mildred Ward Parsons Baker, 80, of White Oak Manor, formerly of Somers Avenue, died at 7:15 a.m. Thursday, April 30, 1998, at the manor.

Mr. Robert L. Brewer
ASHEBORO - Mr. Robert Lester Brewer, 65, of 701 N.C. 42 South, died Thursday, April 30, 1998, at his home.
A native of Randolph County, he was the husband of Mrs. Peggy Smith Brewer, who survives. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and was the retired director of Driver Education for the Randolph County Schools. He served as state president for the North Carolina Driver and Traffic Safety Education Association - NCDTSEA - in 1987-88, and during his nearly 30 years of driver education which started in 1959, he served as president of the South Piedmont region, was a member of the state NCDTSEA board, and was an advocate for driver education. He was a past member and youth director of Woodmen of the World and was a member of the Board of Directors of Eastside Fire Department. He was the owner and operator of C/E Mustang and attended Asheboro United Church of Christ.
Survivors other than his wife include two sons, Mr. Robert L. 'Bob' Brewer Jr. of Burlington and Mr. Steve Brewer of Asheboro; a daughter, Mrs. Sue Ellen B. Cockman of Asheboro; two sisters, Mrs. Shirley B. Daniels of Raleigh and Mrs. Geraldine B. Routh of Bennett; and five grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Asheboro United Church of Christ by the Rev. Nathan King and the Rev. Lynwood Hubbard. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Christian Church cemetery.
The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home in Asheboro from 6:30 to 9 this evening.

Mr. Joseph L. Wood
LOS ANGELES - Mr. Joseph Lee Wood, 28, of 1963 N. Cahsong Blvd., died at 10:48 p.m. Saturday, April 25, 1998, at his home after a sudden illness.
Born Sept. 3, 1969, in Fort Bragg, he was the son of Mr. Johnny P. Wood and Mrs. Mary E. Wood, who both survive. He was a Baptist.
Survivors other than his parents of Swepsonville include two brothers, Mr. Phillip Wood of Tobynanna, Pa., and Mr. Johnathan Wood of Titusville, Fla.; and his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Hilda Wood of Swepsonville.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at McClure Funeral Home in Graham by the Rev. Don Clements.
The family will be at the home of the parents, 1056 N.C. 54, Swepsonville.
Ms. Lucy G. Gant
BURLINGTON - Ms. Lucy Grimes Gant of 1615 Cadiz St., died Tuesday, April 28, 1998, at her home.

Mr. James Foster Sr.
SOUTH DAYTONA, Fla. - Mr. James Earl Foster Sr., 87, of 1980 Teague St., died Friday, May 1, 1998, at his home after several years of failing health.
Born March 13, 1911, in Caswell County, he was the husband of Mrs. Beatrice Young Foster, who survives, and the son of Mr. Thomas T. Foster and Mrs. Lillie Smith Foster, both deceased.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include one daughter, Ms. Carolyn Green of South Daytona; two sons, Mr. James Earl Foster Jr. of Arizona and Mr. Michael Foster of Maggie Valley; a sister, Ms. Mattie Foster Hooper of Yanceyville; a brother, Mr. Woodrow W. Foster of Yanceyville; and five grandchildren.
The funeral and burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Florida.

Mrs. Alice L. Long
CHAPEL HILL - Mrs. Alice Lott Long, 69, of Chapel Hill Rehab, 1602 E. Franklin St., died at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, May 2, 1998, at her home.
A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., she was the wife of the late Mr. John Franklin Long Sr., and the daughter of Mr. Clarence Lott and Mrs. Marie Qudel Lott, both deceased. She was a homemaker and a Baptist.
Survivors include two sons, Mr. John F. Long Jr. of Burlington and Mr. James Elder Long of Snow Camp; and a sister, Mrs. Irene Groover of Dunedin, Fla.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Alamance Memorial Park Mausoleum by the Rev. Howard Thompson, pastor of the Burlington Assembly of God.
There will be no visitation. The family will be at the home of Mr. James Elder Long Jr., 4422 Bass Mountain Road, Snow Camp.

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Evelyn Annie Weaver Oakes Yandle, 87, of 521 Vine St., died Saturday, May 2, 1998, at the Hospice Home after one year of failing health.
A native of Person County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Herman L. Yandle, and the daughter of Mr. William 'Willie' Weaver and Mrs. Annie Sue Gates Weaver, both deceased. She was retired from Burlington Industries, the J. Spencer Love Center. She was a member of Beverly Hills United Church of Christ.
Survivors include five daughters, Mrs. Hildred Garland and Ms. Betty Jean Staats, both of Mebane, Ms. Jewell Scott of Elon College, Ms. Ruby Jones of Enosburg, Vt., and Ms. Marjorie Brown of Raleigh; a son, Mr. Dewey Alvis Oakes of Snow Camp; two stepsons, Mr. James H. Yandle and Mr. Philip P. Yandle, both of Chesapeake, Va.; three sisters, Mrs. Lillie Mae Dixon of Burlington, Mrs. Leona Whitlow and Mrs. Sue Whitlow, both of Leasburg; 20 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by two daughters, Ms. Grace Jeanette Mitchell and Ms. Virginia Louise DeMarino; two sons, Mr. Jesse Riley Oakes and Mr. William Thomas Oakes; three brothers, Mr. Ervin Weaver, Mr. Fred Weaver and Mr. Coy Weaver; and a sister, Mrs. Cora Whitlow.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Dr. Kenneth Register, former pastor of Beverly Hills United Church of Christ, and Dr. Chris Burr, current pastor. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.
The family will be at Lowe Funeral Home from 7 to 9 Monday evening, and at other times at the home.

Mr. Marvin Hinshaw
BURLINGTON - Mr. Marvin H. Hinshaw, 87, of 503 Central Ave., died at 2 p.m. Friday, May 1, 1998, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of the late Mrs. Mae Riley Hinshaw, and the son of Mr. Minus Hinshaw and Mrs. Daisy Durham Hinshaw, both deceased. He was retired from the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier after 33 years of service. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was a member of Davis Street United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Barbara H. Wade of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; a son, Mr. Marvin H. Hinshaw Jr. of Lexington; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three sisters.
A graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Monday at Pine Hill cemetery by Dr. Michael Hobbs, pastor of Davis Street United Methodist Church.
The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 1:30 to 3 Monday afternoon.

BURLINGTON - Miss Anne Elizabeth Pitts, 81, of White Oak Manor, died at 6:25 p.m. Friday, May 1, 1998, at her home.
A native of Alamance County, she was the daughter of Mr. Olin Bascomb Pitts and Mrs. Alvenia Guthrie Pitts, both deceased. She was a member of West Market Street United Methodist Church in Greensboro.
Survivors include a brother, Mr. Roy Wesley Pitts of Oak Ridge.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Mr. O.B. Pitts Jr. and Mr. Ben G. Pitts.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. today at Shallow Ford United Church of Christ cemetery by the Rev. George M. Phillips Jr., pastor of Zion Christian Church.

GRAHAM - Mrs. Mary Kella Marshall Parrott, 79, of Presbyterian Home of Hawfields, died at 11:30 a.m. Friday, May 1, 1998, at her home after nine months of failing health.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Mr. George Parrott, and the daughter of Mr. W.H. Marshall and Mrs. Lizzie Teer Marshall, both deceased. She was retired from Virginia Mills and was a member of Swepsonville United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Blanche Marshall Teer of Burlington and Mrs. Mildred Marshall Brady of Swepsonville.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Phillips Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery by the Rev. Glenn Everett, pastor of Swepsonville United Methodist Church.
There was no visistation. The family will be at the home of Mrs. Mildred Brady, 1406 N.C. 54, Swepsonville Road, Graham.

MEBANE - Mr. Rufus Miles, 86, of 3375 Dickey Mill Road, died at 7:10 p.m. Friday, May 1, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center in Burlington after a critical illness of several days.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Blanche Spencer Miles, who survives, and the son of Mr. John Miles and Mrs. Elnora King Miles, both deceased. He was a member of Miles Chapel Baptist Church.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Mrs. Ometa M. Corbett of Mebane; a son, Mr. John Miles of Greensboro; five sisters, Mrs. Margie M. Williamson of Burlington, Mrs. Daisy Bradshaw Willis and Mrs. Annie M. Enoch, both of Green Level, and Mrs. Rosa M. Haith and Mrs. Corrine M. White, both of Mebane; and four grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Miles Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. Bruce Hurst, pastor. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at the church 30 minutes before the service.
