Mr. Earl Ward
CHESAPEAKE, Va. - Mr. Earl Ward, 73, of 2828 Meadowbrook Court, died Thursday, May 21, 1998, at Mary View Nursing Center after several years of failing health.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Jean Burns Ward who survives, and the son of Mr. William Avery Ward and Mrs. Annie Vaughn Ward, both deceased. He was employed by J.C. Penney for 41 years and was a member of the Rotary Club.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include two sons, Mr. Mike Ward of Richmond and Mr. Greg Ward of Virginia Beach, Va.; a daughter, Ms. Jean Howell of Virginia Beach; two brothers, Mr. Dace Ward of Burlington and Mr. Glenn Ward of High Point; three sisters, Mrs. Laura Ward Gurganious, Mrs. Eleanor Ward Stewart and Mrs. Ann Ward Underwood, all of Burlington; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Mr. Billy Ward.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Mary View Nursing Center.
Mr. Woodrow W. Miles
HAW RIVER - Mr. Woodrow Wilson Miles, 79, of 424 Glen Oaks Road, died at 2:04 p.m. Friday, May 22, 1998, at Alamance Health Care Center after five months of failing health.
A native of Caswell County, he was the husband of Mrs. Edith Caulder Miles. He was retired from the North Carolina Department of Transportation. He was a member of Haw River Christian Church.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include a sister, Mrs. Nancy Miles Saunders of Burlington.
The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Haw River Christian Church by the Rev. James L. Rosser, pastor. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.
The family will be at the church one hour before the service, and at other times at the home.

Ms. Betty D. Fearing
MANTEO - Ms. Betty Dean Fearing, 46, died Monday, May 25, 1998, at Chesapeake General Hospital after a long illness.
She was the daughter of Mrs. Mary Lib Simpson Fearing, who survives, and the late Mr. M. Keith Fearing Jr. She was an athlete and attended Manteo High School, Stuart Hall, Meredith College and received a bachelor of arts degree from the University of South Florida. A communications major, she had done graduate work and was employed in that field before her illness and was working at one time as a reporter for the Coastland Times. She worked for a year in the Netherlands and was the first 18-year-old in Dare County to register for the vote. She attended St. Andrews by the Sea Episcopal Church.
Survivors other than her mother of Manteo include a brother, Mr. Malcolm K. Fearing III of Manteo.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James V. Simpson, former residents of Burlington, and Mr. and Mrs. M. Keith Fearing.

Mr. Robert D. Byrd
BURLINGTON - Mr. Robert Daniel "Bob" Byrd, 75, of 1609 Inglewood Drive, died Monday, May 25, 1998, at White Oak Manor after several years of failing health.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Chattie Price Byrd, who survives, and the son of Mr. William Byrd and Mrs. Elizabeth "Pearl" Ellis Byrd, both deceased. He was a former salesman for C.B. Ellis Music Company and served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He was a member of the Burlington Kiwanis Club. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church where he was a member of the Men's Bible Class and a former member of the choir.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include two daughters, Ms. Brenda F. Byrd of Wake Forest and Mrs. Lynette B. Reynolds of Burlington; a brother, Mr. Charles Ellis Byrd; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church by Dr. Charles Williams, pastor. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.
Mr. Edmond Cook Sr.
BURLINGTON - Mr. Edmond Ray "Buck" Cook Sr., 67, of 572 Sycamore Drive, died at 10:10 a.m. Monday, May 25, 1998, at his home after one year of failing health, six weeks critical.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Josie Masters Cook, and the son of Mr. Eli Monroe Cook and Mrs. Flossie Davis Cook, both deceased. He was a former employee of Fairystone Fabrics and was formerly a supervisor at Universal Mills and Glen Raven Mills. He was a member of Riverview Baptist Church.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Ms. Patricia "Pat" Cook of Burlington; two sons, Mr. Milton Ray Cook and Mr. James "Jamie" E. Cook, both of Burlington; a sister, Mrs. Mary Sue Creed of Burlington; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Mr. Brodie George Cook Sr.; a sister, Mrs. Christina Wagoner; and a brother, Mr. Brodie Duke Cook.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Rich and Thompson Chapel in Burlington by the Rev. Brodie Baker, pastor of Riverview Baptist Church. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.

Mr. Earl G. Russell
GRAHAM - Mr. Earl Gene "Snake" Russell, 68, of 204 S. Marshall St., died at 6:32 p.m. Monday, May 25, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after one year of failing health, two days critical.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of the late Mrs. Lunette Thompson Russell, and the son of Mr. Charles E. Russell Sr. and Mrs. Naomi Rose Bivens Russell, both deceased. He was a retired employee of P. Lorillard Tobacco Company and was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War. He was a Methodist.
Survivors include a stepson, Mr. James Lynn Dean of Mebane; four sisters, Mrs. Margaret R. Hinshaw and Mrs. Sheila R. Hughes, both of Burlington, and Mrs. Agatha R. Johnson and Mrs. Anne R. Lail, both of Graham; two brothers, Mr. Melvin L. Russell and Mr. Sam T. Russell, both of Graham; and two step grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Mr. Charles E. Russell Jr. and Mr. Banks M. Russell.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Graham Memorial Park by the Rev. Paul Phillips, pastor of First United Methodist Church of Graham.

Mr. Tom S. Gant
BURLINGTON - Mr. Tom Sidney Gant, 44, of 1133 Jackson St., died Sunday, May 24, 1998, at his home after a long illness.
A native of Alamance County, he was the son of Mr. Luther Gant Sr. and Mrs. Cora Curry Gant, both deceased.
Survivors include five sisters, Mrs. Betty Enoch, Mrs. Jo Ann Thompson, Mrs. Jean Thrope and Mrs. Febbie Burton, all of Burlington, and Mrs. Cal Durant of Winston-Salem; and two brothers, Mr. Gary Gant and Mr. Luther Gant, both of Burlington.
The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday at Sharpe Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Steve Oldham, pastor of Clinton Memorial United Church of Christ. Burial will be in the Curry Cemetery.
The family will be at the funeral home one hour before the service, and at other times at the home.

FAYETTEVILLE - Mrs. Sarah Marjorie Kelley, 67, died Sunday, May 24, 1998.
Survivors include two sons, Mr. Clifton Lawrence "Larry" Kelley of Fayetteville and Mr. Michael Alan Kelley of Mebane; a daughter, Ms. Linda McMahon of Slidell, La.; a sister, Ms. Kitty Osburn of Orlando, Fla.; and seven grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at LaFayette Baptist Church in Fayetteville by the Rev. Brian Lee. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park in Orlando.

Mr. Sammy G. King
GREENSBORO - Mr. Sammy Gattis King of 400 Tipperary Drive, died Sunday, May 24, 1998, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital.
He was the husband of Mrs. Geraldine King, who survives, and the son of Mr. Roy King and Mrs. Bessie King, both deceased. He was retired from the city of Greensboro. He served as an Airborne Ranger in the 82nd Airborne Division of the U.S. Army.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include three daughters, Mrs. Lanny (Sandra) Stout of Burlington and Mrs. Chuck (Samantha) Comer and Mrs. Shawn (Nicole) Saleeby, both of Greensboro; three sons, Mr. Nelson King of Burlington, and Mr. Sam King and Mr. Grady King, both of Greensboro; five sisters, Ms. Delores Stinson of Graham, Ms. Peggy Toney of Burlington, Ms. Pat Johnson of High Point, Ms. Grace Underwood of Reidsville and Ms. Diane Godwin of Elon College; four brothers, Mr. Leroy King of Mebane, Mr. Tommy King and Mr. Dwight Wolfe, both of Burlington, and Mr. Beverly King of Gibsonville; 10 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Mr. Ervin King and Mr. Sherman King.

Mrs. Velma W. Besix
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Velma Wilson Besix, 69, of 8B Cates Circle, Graham, died at 1:45 p.m. Tuesday, May 26, 1998, at her home after 13 months of failing health.
A native of Halifax County, Va., she was the daughter of Mr. Spurgeon Bowman and Mrs. Stella Wright Bowman, both deceased. She was retired from Eric Inc. as a seamstress.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Deborah Matthews and Mrs. Linda Jarrett, both of Burlington; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Rich and Thompson Chapel in Burlington by the Rev. Bobby Fann. Burial will be in Hillsborough City Cemetery.
Mrs. Florence Bailey
MILTON - Mrs. Florence Manley Bailey, 84, died Tuesday, May 26, 1998, at her home.
She was the wife of Mr. Wayne Bailey, who survives, and the daughter of the Rev. Ray Manley and Mrs. Mary Ellen Manley, both deceased. She was a retired public school teacher of music and French and was a librarian. She had 22 years of service in Mercer Co, W.Va., nine years in Caswell County and one year in Alamance County. She was a pianist at Milton Presbyerian Church and past president of the Milton women's club.
Survivors other than her husband of Milton include a son, Mr. Emmett Gerald Bailey of La Grange, Ore.; two daughters, Ms. Cheryl Ann Hardy of Raleigh and Ms. Janice Irene Nicowski of Dunkirk, Md.; a brother, Mr. Bruce Manley of Erie, Pa.; two sisters, Ms. Ruth Eunice Miller of Bell Vernon, Pa., and Ms. Leah Mae Le Van of Allentown, Pa.; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
A graveside service will be held at Cedars cemetery in Milton.

Mr. George Reynolds Sr.
GREENWOOD, S.C. - Mr. George Lester Reynolds Sr., 83, died at 8 a.m. Tuesday, May 26, 1998, at the Greenwood Hospital after three weeks of failing health.
He was the husband of Mrs. Annie Hurdle Walker Reynolds, who survives. He was a retired shoe merchant.
Survivors other than his wife of the home and formerly of Alamance County include a daughter, Mrs. Rebecca Reynolds Bryson of the South Pacific; a son, Mr. George Lester Reynolds Jr. of Atlanta; and four grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church of Greenwood. Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Oakwood cemetery in Greenwood.
