Mrs. Julia A. Graves
YANCEYVILLE - Mrs. Julia Ann Graves, 84, of 230 First Ave., died Wednesday, June 10, 1998, at Annie Penn Memorial Hospital in Reidsville. Born July 10, 1913, in Caswell County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Thomas Samuel Graves, and the daughter of Mr. Peter Graves and Mrs. Harriet Watkins Graves, both deceased. She was a member of Pearson Chapel AME Church and the Yanceyville Home Demonstration Club. She was a member of the Pride of Locust Hill Order of Eastern Star No. 624. Survivors include four sons, Mr. Samuel Douglas Graves of Yanceyville, Mr. Leroy Graves of Greensboro, Mr. Thomas L. Graves of Durham and Mr. Billy L. Graves of Cleveland; a daughter, Mrs. Ximinena Graves Bowman of Severena Park, Md.; a brother, Mr. Jimmy Graves of Yanceyville; one sister, Mrs. Mattie Williamson of Yanceyville; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Pearson Chapel AME Church by the Rev. Tommy Williamson. Burial will be in the Yanceyville Missionary Baptist Church cemetery. The body may be viewed from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Fulton Funeral Home. The family will be at the home.
Ms. Dorothy V. Moon
SHARPSBURG, Ga. - Ms. Dorothy V. Moon, 84, of North Woods Road died Wednesday, June 10, 1998, at Newnan Hospital. Born June 4, 1914, in Person County, she was the daughter of Mr. Nicodemus Vaughn and Ms. Maggie Davis, both deceased. She was a homemaker and a Baptist.
Survivors include a son, Mr. Daniel Moon of Sharpsburg; a daughter, Ms. Faye G. Payne of Carolina Beach; two sisters, Ms. Ilver Foster of Morehead City and Ms. Vallie Loy of Jacksonville, Fla.; and three grandchildren, one of whom lives in Burlington. A graveside service will be conducted at noon Saturday at Pine Hill Cemetery. The family will be at the home of Mrs. June Vaughn, 255 Albany St., Burlington, Friday evening. Mr. Charles Yarbrough
YANCEYVILLE - Mr. Charles Layton Yarbrough, 59, of 820 U.S. 158 West, died Wednesday, June 10, 1998, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill after several months of failing health. A native of Caswell County, he was the husband of Mrs. Marie Stephens Yarbrough, who survives, and Mrs. Frances Dooley Yarbrough, who died in 1981. He was the son of Mr. Ashley Yarbrough and Mrs. Mamie Cheek Yarbrough, both deceased. He was a graduate of Bartlett-Yancey High School and was the service manager for Green Fuel Company. He served as a fireman for 34 years and was deputy chief for the Yanceyville Fire Department. He was a member of First Baptist Church where he was a deacon and served on various committees. Survivors other than his wife of the home include three sons, Mr. Steve Yarbrough of the home, Mr. Chuck Yarbrough of Blanch and Mr. Randy Yarbrough of Anderson; a stepson, Mr. Scott Stephens of Burlington; a sister, Ms. Sue Scearce of Mount Airy; a half sister, Ms. Dorothy Chandler of Milton; a halfbrother, Mr. Glen Pattillo of Raleigh; four grandchildren; and two step grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church by the Rev. David Powell. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mr. Preston Chaplin
GREENSBORO - Mr. Preston Harold Chaplin of 207 McCulloch St., died Sunday, June 7, 1998, at Moses Cone Health Center after a long illness. A native of Jefferson, S.C., he was the son of Mr. Press Chaplin and Mrs. Martha Waddy Chaplin, both deceased. He was a tie end operator at Toltec, Greensboro. Survivors include six daughters, Ms. Denine Glenn, Ms. Kimberly Glenn, Ms. Joshlyn Chaplin, Ms. La Tonya Chaplin and Ms. Leslie Robinson, all of Greensboro, and Ms. Shuan Glen of New York City; a brother, Mr. Jimmy Chaplin of Richmond, Va.; four sisters, Mrs. Mae Elizabeth Corbett of Mebane, Ms. Mary Jane Chaplin of Burlington, Mrs. Ava Mebane of New York City and Mrs. Patricia Poole of Graham; and four grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday at Sharpe Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Maurice Boswell, pastor of Burton Chapel Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Mebane Community Cemetery. Mr. Benjamin Kernodle
GRAHAM - Mr. Benjamin Eugene Kernodle, 55, of 4549 N.C. 87 South, died at 10:57 p.m. Tuesday, June 9, 1998, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill after two years of failing health, four days critical. A native of Alamance County, he was the son of Mrs. Anne Hall Moore, who survives, and the late Mr. Benjamin Franklin Kernodle. He was a construction worker and a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a Baptist. Survivors other than his mother of the home include his stepfather, Mr. Harold Moore of the home; four sisters, Mrs. Sandra Jones of Snow Camp, Mrs. Malissa Smalling of Fort Pierce, Fla., Ms. Mary Ausley of Walnut Cove and Mrs. Nancy Chappell of Graham; and three brothers, Mr. Ricky Kernodle and Mr. Larry Billings, both of Burlington, and Mr. Gary Billings of Graham. The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at McClure Funeral Home Chapel in Graham by the Rev. Mike Wilburn. Burial will be in the Legion Section of Pine Hill Cemetery. BURLINGTON - Mrs. Elizabeth Ann Clemmons Jones, 52, of 1349 N., Graham-Hopedale Road, died Thursday evening, June 11, 1998, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham after two years of failing health, two weeks critical. A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Curtis Wayne Jones, and the daughter of Mrs. Wilmer Kernodle Clemmons, who survives, and the late Mr. Johnnie Milton Clemmons. She was employed by Aramark Food Company in Elon College and was a member of Staley Memorial Baptist Church. Survivors other than her mother of the home include three sisters, Mrs. Sam (Helen) Hardy of Hollywood, Fla., Mrs. Tommy (Betty) Pritchett of Elon College and Mrs. Bill (Joy) McCaskill of Burlington; and two brothers, Mr. Homer 'Peanut' Clemmons and Mr. Johnnie 'J.M.' Clemmons Jr., both of Burlington. A graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Deep Creek Baptist Church cemetery by the Rev. Bennie Smith, pastor of Staley Memorial Baptist Church. Dr. Stephen W. Grosse
PHILADELPHIA - Dr. Stephen Wakefield Grosse of Philadelphia died Thursday morning, June 11, 1998, at Lower Marion Township in Montgomery County, Pa. A native of Delaware County, Pa., he was the son of Dr. Edward M. Grosse and Mrs. Dorothy B. Blackburn Grosse, who both survive. He was a dentist and a member of Landsdowne Presbyterian Church. Survivors other than his parents of Media, Pa., include two brothers, Dr. Robert Edward Grosse and the Rev. Dr. Frederick George Grosse of Burlington. The funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday at Landsdowne Presbyterian Church. Burial will be private. Mrs. Catherine Thompson
RALEIGH - Mrs. Catherine Murdock Thompson died Wednesday, June 10, 1998, at her home on Myrtle Avenue. Born Dec. 21, 1918 in Durham County, she was the wife of Mr. Neil Thompson, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Jodie Murdock and Mrs. Zella Murdock, both deceased. She attended Mebane High School, and in 1937 completed the course of study at Mae's School of Beauty Culture in North Wilkesboro. She and her husband collaborated in the operation of a chain of beauty shops in Mebane, Swepsonville and Burlington. After her husband became a minister, they served in Lake Waccamaw, Fair Bluff, Wesley Memorial of Raleigh, at Methodist College, and at Highland United Methodist Church in Raleigh. Survivors other than her husband of Swepsonville include two daughters, Ms. Rosalind Thompson and Ms. Rachel Thompson; three brothers, Mr. Mack Murdock, Mr. J.M. Murdock and Mr. David Murdock. A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Friday at Highland United Methodist Church. A private burial was at Raleigh Memorial Park. GREENSBORO - Mr. Ralph Burr, 69, of Greensboro, died Thursday, June 11, 1998, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital. A native of Rockingham, he was the husband for 51 years to Mrs. Minnie Odom Burr, who survives. He retired from Cone Mills after 24 years of service. He was a Baptist. Survivors other than his wife of the home include a son, Mr. Larry Burr of High Point; two daughters, Miss Diane Burr of Greensboro and Mrs. Robert (Annette B.) Cox of Randleman; two sisters, Mrs. Streetie (Louise) Benson of Rockingham and Mrs. Paul (Juanita) Baucom of Burlington; four brothers, Mr. Raymond Burr of Rollingsford, N.H., Mr. Burtis Burr of Danville, Va., Mr. Daniel Burr Jr. of Fairfax, Va., and Mr. Eddie Burr of Rockingham; and two grandchildren. Mrs. Miriam M. Briggs
GREENSBORO - Mrs. Miriam Murray Briggs, 83, died Wednesday, June 10, 1998, after a long illness. She was the wife for 45 years of the late Mr. Samuel Harding Briggs, and the daughter of Mr. Samuel Mark Murray and Mrs. Polly Johnson Murray, both deceased. She was from Roxboro and was a longtime resident of Greensboro. She had been a resident of the Masonic and Eastern Star Home's Bass Care Center for the past few years. She was a member of South Elm Street Baptist Church in Greensboro. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Dave (Linda) Hobson of Whitsett; a sister, Ms. Mary Lee Whitfield of Roxboro and Charlotte; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ms. Jessiemine Murray Yarborough and Ms. Ann Murray Greeson; and two brothers, Mr. Samuel Otha Murray and Mr. John Mark Murray. The funeral was Friday at the Masonic and Eastern Star Home Chapel. Burial was in Lakeview Memorial Park. The family will be at the Hobson residence in Whitsett.
